Bhangra Idols 2012 Confusion

so the local teams i.e. sgpd nj nypd etc didn't want to compete in the competition and that's what idols wanted as a base to get other teams interested in coming to toronto to compete. It's pretty obvious as far as I could tell from even earlier posts that this is what they meant, but if I'm wrong then please correct me.

In a nutshell

We tried to do a competition in Toronto but it did not work out for us. We had most requirements in place including some local teams, however we were seeking a commitment from all of the Toronto teams. Some refused to compete against others, most said "the support for Bhangra competitions is not out here"-meaning family and friends do not support it due to past issues. So, we were facing a combination of problems and some of our internal deadlines were passing so then we had no other choice but to withdraw.

that is 1. unrealistic and 2. solidifies idols as a competition that ignores the US East. thanks for the clarification. stick to b.c.

very disappointed with the idols response.

How is Idols ignoring the US East? We infact have teams competing in our upcoming competition on Oct 7th from the US East...

And what part of the response was disappointing?

you were ignoring the us east, by basing ur entire competition around one city.

the part that disappointed me the most was when you insinuated that toronto teams let you down. was this bhangra idols best of the east, or was it, "if sgpd, nypd, nj, and shan-e don't perform, we aren't doing this competition."

i know which teams are performing, but that doesn't change the fact that you put all your eggs in one basket, and when they diddn't hatch, you threw the basket out.

Faiz, imagine throwing a competition in a city across the country but no local teams were available to compete. The difficulty in tapping the local crowd (once again, in a city that is not your own, that is across the country) to get tickets sold and maximizing local resources to host the competition would be significantly higher without local teams.

Throwing competitions takes significant investments in both time and money, especially competitions like Bhangra Idols, Bayside Bhangra..etc that try to compensate team expenses instead of trying to pocket everything themselves. It seems the reasoning for the decision to not host a "Best of the East" competition was a sound business one and it's ridiculous to attack them in this manner for it. (ie: Imagine if we threw a comp in LA but no local LA teams were there to compete or help out.) And c'mon, would you actually want to throw a competition called "Best of the East" when the actual best weren't there and had to fill the line-up with mediocre east coast teams with 0 to 2 placings ever? Seems like a huge risk throwing such an event that could jeopardize a competition's long-standing reputation in the local community and bhangra circuit.

Not once were the US East or Toronto teams ignored, they were updated throughout the whole process then invited to the upcoming Oct. 7th competition.

To clarify, all the Toronto teams did not let us down, however Bhangra Idols builds its competition by having a certain percentage of local teams participating in the competition and their supporters in the Spirit Squads. Our past competitions listed on our site http://bhangraidols.com/index.html proves this method. So if we couldn't execute our same proven process that we use in BC for Toronto, then are we wrong to withdraw?

I definitely see your point about this situation but also look at it from our view, from trying to get this competition going by conducting few site visits, to booking venues, to creating advertisements, to having numerous meetings/conversations, to corporate sponsorships ect. then at the end we had to withdraw.

This is also a disappointment to us and trust the fact that we tried. But lets make a few things clear, we have never ignored teams, nor have we treated them badly, we have always helped teams and members of the Bhangra community wherever they needed it and always will.

-Best of the West happend in May and Idols East was going to happen in August. The Idols championship was being held in October, so it was unfair to the Eastern teams to only have 2 months to prepare while the Western teams had almost 6 months. That seems like a legitimate reason that to not throw a competition because the timing would be unfair. This in itself is a legitimate reason for teams to not want to compete and for Idols to pull the competition

- Idols doesnt ignore east coast team. Iam sure if eastern teams outside of Toronto applied they would get accepted. For Best of the Best I know that there will be 2 (if not more) eastern teams who are not out of Toronto.

After reading and reflecting upon the content of this thread, we would like to thank the Bhangra community and particularly the individuals participating in this thread for bringing light to Bhangra Idols-Best in the East. We as an organization will work towards researching alternate options to rectify this for next year, and hope that the entire Bhangra Community on the East is on board to help, participate, and partner with us.

The Bhangra Idols organization is built on integrity, professionalism, and the passion for Bhangra. Our vision is solely to promote and further Bhangra through partnering with communities and teams. We aim to include and respect everyone and offend no one.

Thank you all once again,

Regards'

Really quickly:

Bhangra Idols is most def built on integrity and professionalism. Both the Gabroo Punjabis and GTV attended a Bhangra competition in Surrey BC earlier this year. Many verbal and written promises were made in respect to "out of country team honorariums and travel reimbursements". Long story short, many months had passed and no reimbursement had taken place (for both honorarium, travel expenses, or winning prize) rather we were given an array of excuses.

When I attended Bhangra Idols earlier this year, Raj Sangha found out about this and made it a priority to not only make sure I was reimbursed, but vowed the same for a few other US teams who were in the same predicament. Though Bhangra Idols and Paji Guys Entertainment had no part in the show we attended, they made it a personal mission since we were "guests to their country". To be frank and honest, this opened up my eyes as I had never expected such respect from any BC based organization.

As far as I am aware, Bhangra Idols helped recover costs to reimburse all teams, even going as far as investing their own funds to make the situation right.

So ask yourself, would they really invest countless hours trying to organize a show in the Toronto area, and then just pull out without restraint? I know not.

Much respect to the Idols committee, they're doing great things for the Bhangra community and I hope they can continue to do the same in the coming years.
