Bhangra Showdown Videos

Hi all Personally having performed in previous Bhangra Showdown comps I think the overall standard of all the teams had improved this year. A lot more originality this year, some really good bhangra executions and nice gimmicks (Although isnt it bad luck to open an umbrella indoors??)

Would be nice to get the bhangra worlds thoughts on the videos.

Some teams appear to be doing tag-team bhangra , which appears somewhat unfair, is that frowned upon in NA??

Personally watching the videos dont think imperial was upto scratch for 2nd place. There were other stronger teams looking at the videos. Reasons: Good gimmicks but bhangra was simple and not executed well all the way throughout and tag team bhangra (bring dancers off, and then bring new dancers on). But hey im not a judge, or a professional at bhangra, its just my opinion, so sorry if that upsets anyone.

Overall though... really enjoyed watching the videos, Well done to all those who entered and keep up loving bhangra!!

Unfortunately this is the only UK-based competition (comprising of University teams) and has grown substantially over the past 3 years. This year there were a total of 10 teams and only 2 places were announced but it is worth bearing in mind that all teams are Uni students. Gurnak is right the standards has been raised again. I'm just a spectator myself but I did really enjoy it overall despite having kinda poor seats in Block 2.

Maybe 10 teams is a lot though? Any thoughts?

I thought Brunel, Kingston & Imperial were good!

Can somebody explain why there is just a disconnect in terms of quality with UK teams vs. North American teams...

I feel like the Birmingham wouldnt have even placed at alot of NA competitions. I dont get it... They have such a vibrant Bhangra community there was well.

Ive only watched birminghams and leicesters video but im glad to see that teams in the UK have evolved into doing more "traditional" bhangra rather than early 2000's north american bhangra. Im also very happy you guys stopped wearing that ugly ass paper turlay as well lol. Leicester seems to have an sgpd-esque flare to them, is Vic at leicester?

I was at this and last year's showdown and used to compete in NA. While the standard is still relatively low compared to NA teams, it's a huge step from last year. There was a significant push toward a more traditional routine (and vardiyan) compared to last year, which was nice to see. Birmingham had a clean, well executed set and was folk. Leicester also had a nice dance. Queen Mary's showed potential but didn't execute as well as they could've. Some of the other teams, like Kingston and Manchester, had some traditional aspects in their performances too.

@ Hand of Goddard: They did announce Imperial as the 2nd place winner but didn't announce a 3rd place winner. Imperial should not have placed second, not if this was a Bhangra competition. Maybe a Kung-fu or cheerleading competition. There were much more deserving teams there. But they were the home team as they hosted the competition. It was a wrong placing, but expected.

@AB: I don't think UK will catch up until they take the non-Bhangra elements out of judging. There's no maximum number of people allowed on a team, which allows for 'tag-team Bhangra' taking out the stamina factor, a central part of Bhangra performance. Also, 4/5 judges were non-Bhangra dancing judges. 2 were music celebrities, 2 were just 'dance experts'. Until they cater the judging toward Bhangra, they will be slow to move forward. Right now, stunts, giddah and gimmicks are a HUGE part of the dance. Watching Birmingham was a relief. First UK university dance I seen with grace. They could actually do Jhummer lol. Congrats to you guys.

Oh, did they? They had us stashed on the coach/stairwell up until a minute before Birmingham was announced as winners. Didn't give us any indication that they had already announced a place by the time they let us on stage. What a joke.

Truth. The majority of teams have already started to correct their attitude with regard to being open to actually learning bhangra (mine is still partially resistant...was quite a shock when I was first exposed to their thoughts about "freshie"/"pindoo" steps). Hopefully, the judges follow suit.

I heard the teams were restricted to sitting in dark busses for the entire competition, couldn't even enter the venue and watch the show. Never heard of that before.

yah when I asked before hand if our team could watch the other teams, I was told that the venue was sold out (even though initially they were supposed to have reserved seats for competitors). I asked how we're supposed to compare ourselves to the other teams and see for ourselves who deserved to be placed or not, and I was told to watch on youtube. lol

I think a major reason is that there's only one competition here every year. If we even had 3 or 4 competitions, it'd mean better fitness and better execution.

Also, because it's a university competition, the teams are always very different from the previous years because of people graduating etc. If I asked any of the best NA/Canadian teams (NJ, SGPD, VCU) to cut half of their team, train up people who have never performed bhangra before in 4 weeks (that's all we have to prepare because of studying), there's no way those teams would be as good as we know them to be. Continuity within teams is very important when it comes to improving and due to the nature of our competition, that's almost impossible!

Just realised I shouldn't have mentioned VCU, they are a uni team! Sorry!
