Team SIAC here.... We were left at the venue with no ride back to the hotel. One of the live judges, one dholi from another team, one of the MC's and one of the Dj's from the competition were kind enough to go out of their own way to give us a ride (thank you to those three indiviuals) Now we have to be at the airport in the next hour and a half. Do you guys mind answering your phones and giving us a ride to the airport?

Stay tuned for the full review of this nightmare.

Hi...... SIAC coach here......

Ummmm it would be nice if someone answered their phones. We have a truck load of minors waiting for rides to the airport. It be nice if we could get them home to their parents safely.

Thanks

what a crazy weekend, glad its finally about to be over. never experienced such a horrible bhangra weekend. This is from my point of view.

MIXER:
So the mixer ran a bit late but thats normal, the games were pretty fun and this time they did have enough food for everyone. One thing that really bugged me was the way the show order was chosen, Mango lassi flip cup. i feel like its better to pick out of a hat, keep it simple. if the committee told us that this game was going to be picking the line up order i would have not had 2 other members come play this game, i thought it was just for fun.

Tech Time:
We had tech time at 8:30 am i believe, but we ended up going on stage around 1:15. We understand that the equipment got stolen the night before, but that doesn't mean you make a team wait at the venue for a few hours just for a status update, you could have sent teams back to the hotel to let them rest a bit more, then bring them back when everything was ready to go.There wasn't anyone around to tell us what was going on.We only had 20 mins of tech time while the other 2 live teams had 40 mins.

Show:
Show started late, we went up 4th, and before we went up we were told that we have 2 mins to set up our props and mics other wise points would be taken away. The Sound was HORRIBLE, lights were okay, but it could have been better.
After Party:
Didn't go.

Now that was a short review of the comp itself.

Committee Review:
Where the hell were you guys at when siac needed a ride from the venue back to the hotel after the show?? you guys were having fun snapchatting jaz dhami at the after party yet you couldn't reply to a text or phone calls. WTF.. your teams are important, you threw a bhangra comp not a concert. They spent a ridiculous amount of money on 2 cab vans to drop them off to san jose airport. i know most of the members and drove 2 and half hours to drop them off at the airport, on top of that one of the live judges had to go out of his way to drop some of the members off as well, you guys really dont care for the teams whats so ever. its comps like this that bring a shame to bhangra.
i can continue on with so much more but ill let others post their experiences from this weekend

Off of these reviews, I honestly can't say more than what has been spoken.

I totally understand the different factors and work ethics of being on a committee but it definitely did not seem like there was a committee for BSM knowing what they were all doing to begin with, many of them were just as lost as VDM was. There were only a few people I could count on to know what's happening around, who I saw working the whole weekend, and putting in work to make Bhangra State of Mind 2 happen.

There is not a lot for me to say because for all of my team members it was their first competition behind the stage, we were exhibition, and it was our first time seeing a competition without sitting in the audience or being on the committee and actually performing on stage.

As our first experience being a part of such a competition, we wish we could have seen it better. Majority of the cons that occurred during the weekend could have definitely been controlled and set in good hands.

Speaking for the pros, it's very minimal. Yes, we had a liaison (Jasnoor) and she took care of our questions and concerns during the weekend. The only plus side the girls claim to remember is participating in the mixer game - which isn't a huge factor to remember a comp by.

All in all, there is not much to go into detail for. This competition has spoken for itself, performing wise it was a great stepping stone and we're glad we could have had that experience.

This is my personal review of the competition, this isn't intended to reflect the opinions of the team I participated with (VDS).

For a second year competition, I can understand some of the organization problems they had. I think some of the issues were unexpected but for the future the committee should try to over prepare to avoid some of these issues like the lack of water and having enough committee members for teams to reach for help with things like rides and answering questions.

The hotel: The staff was VERY kind and understanding and rather than harassing teams about noise or socializing/loitering in the lobby, they kindly took precautions to come to our rooms and politely ask the teams to remember to keep the noise level down because they were completely packed. I really appreciated that. There was a man who went down to the lobby to make a complaint about the teams. He wasn't complaining about noise or anything but simply about the bhangra dancers that were loitering or filling the halls. The staff member was SO supportive of the teams in the hotel and told the man that the teams were there for an event and that the hotel was taking precautions to give the teams spaces around the hotel. They even opened the conference room for everyone to practice, and even allowed teams to use it after midnight when they would usually have it closed. They didn't mind the teams practicing outside, in the parking lots, and even told me where we could go so that we wouldn't be interrupted by people driving by. I know most teams might overlook these kinds of things, but I've had committee members and hotel staff from other competitions not be understanding at all and just shoo the teams away to save their own necks. The hotel staff did a great job of accommodating the teams as well as their regular visitors.

The mixer: Thank you for having chilly chicken and mango lassi. The hosts were very kind and personable and the committee was very understanding about teams who were getting there late. However, it seemed a bit unorganized. I don't think any team knew exactly when the mixer was set to start. I think we were told to be there by 4:30 but even when we got there late, we were waiting for a while before anything really started up, and when it did, one team was still not there after the games initially started.

The choosing of the show order made absolutely no sense to me. The flip cup game with mango lassi was fun and I think the teams liked it over the usual musical chairs or picking of names out of a hat. However the way they chose the teams that went up to play seemed random. The team that lost the round stayed to play the next team and they didn't really say how they were choosing which team went up first. So, if you went last in the game, you were basically choosing between 1st or 2nd because all of the better spots in the order were taken. Also given that flip cup is normally a drinking game, the teams with younger dancers were already set up at a loss if theyve never played or heard of it. But then again its simply flipping a cup so moving on.

Tech time: SukhSingh07 pretty much summarized my same thoughts. Thank you for the subway!! I don't really understand the subway sandwich thing all these competitions do. Bread and vegetables doesnt provide much subsistence after tech time or through out an entire competition. Yes, it is just a complimentary snack that competitions aren't really required to give, but I know our team was so busy friday night and saturday morning that going out to grab food to keep us going with all the energy we're spending is too hectic. And when that happens, we realize at the end of the day that we've done 5 run throughs and barely had time to go out and get one meal all day.

The gift baskets had one or two energy drinks and a gatorade and the rest was basically junk food. Rather than spending money to get teams junk food that they cant even eat the day before a comp, I think comps should spend that money on just getting us water and maybe some stuff teams can really utilize (icy hot, fruits, protein bars, WATER, tylenol, first aid stuff, extra safety pins or something) but then again every competition is different and its up to them.

The after party: If youre going to charge people 20+ dollars to get in, give them their money back if they're only there for 30 minutes... Or consider team only after parties where only the people on the roster can come because a majority of the fights that happen are between people who aren't even associated with a team or the competition and they just ruin it for the teams who just finished busting their asses and just want to celebrate a great weekend together.

I hope the BSM committee will take some of these critiques into consideration for their next comp!

Sad to hear that it was so disorganized and didn't take care of the attending teams.

Shame that it was such a rough weekend for competing teams. Interested in hearing from the competition organizers...

HonestlY, after reading all these reviews there's really not much more that I can add. The competition was super disorganized. Being the last team to perform for the night, we had tech time last and we didn't get in til 4. Just a hour before the show was to start. On top of that, my team did not even receive our case of water, nor could we find any water after we performed  Like Sharon mentioned in her review, it would be nice to have had healthier variety of snacks that were provided in the gift basket. Yes we're exhibiting but it would be nice to not feel neglected just because we're not an exhibiting team. Other than that our liaison was great, she tried her best to make sure the team and I had everything we needed and the butter chicken at the mixer was amazinggggg. :)

Oh btw, guys please have more water next time. Thanks.

A big thank you for everyone that is posting reviews/feedback. This shouldn't be just about listing a bunch of shit that you hated or went wrong, so I would definitely encourage people to mention the "pros," things you liked, or fun times you had.

We all know that the topics that are controversial draws more attention, but it's nice to hear what a competition did a good job with. It would be awesome to hear from more people/teams where this was one of their first major competitions and more feedback on ways the committee can improve going forward.

This is type of thread that teams should be researching BEFORE they apply to comps.. i.e. next season/next year, teams should be reading this topic and discussing their concerns with the new committee before applying. The surprising thing, it seems the first year of this competition was actually a success so not too sure why they dropped the ball this year: http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/bhangra-state-of-mind-review-feedback-responses-suggestions/

Also please "Bhangra State of Mind 2" committee members, please address these concerns in this topic & individually reach out to the teams that you caused such as an unpleasant experience to when the teams were the main entertainment that drew the crowd to your comp.

~ Basim :)

P.S. - Sent a PM to the committee, so I hope someone checks this thread and responds.

To those of you that don’t know me, I’m a part of PCBCA and have been dancing in the North America bhangra circuit for 9 years. This was my first time dancing with Surrey India Arts Club and most of my team members were quite new to the bhangra scene. This was a first competition for a lot of the boys and we came into this hoping that it would be a positive experience for them.

We were flying in and wanted to make sure our team was well rested so we booked an early incoming flight for Friday. Once we got to the airport, there was no one from the competition to pick us up. Instead a dancer from another competing team (Gagan, the SPD dholi) and his friends picked us up and drove us 2 hours to the hotel. When we got there, we were told the name of our liaison but he was nowhere to be seen. Jas (not our liaison) stepped up and along with Gagan drove us to the pre-party.

The pre-party, like everything else this weekend, was running late. They started two hours later than the planned time. A game was played to figure out the team order. Our team was already exhausted from traveling and shuffling around at the airport for rides. We were just waiting for tech times to be announced so we could head back to the hotel. One of our team members fainted during the mixer and we asked for a ride back to the hotel. We were told to wait 20 minutes because they wanted to wait for Jaz Dhami to arrive. One of the committee members told us that our team was too much of a hassle because we were requesting rides. When we finally got back to the hotel, we still didn’t know our tech time. The BSM committee told us that after they were done at the mixer they would come have a meeting with us at the hotel. Wanting to get some rest, we declined this meeting. Again Jas came to the rescue and made sure we knew our times.

The next morning we woke up at 8am for our scheduled tech time of 10:55am. While we were getting ready to leave, we were texted a new tech time of 12:15. Allegedly the DJ’s sound equipment had been stolen out of his car. While we were waiting for our tech time, three of our team members were waiting to be picked up at the airport. The person responsible for picking them up had slept in. If our tech time had been on time, we would have been missing team members. Jas and our liaison dropped us off at the venue. We didn’t end up going on stage until around 3pm.

We went back to the hotel after this, showered and had to rush back to the venue. At this point, we were worried about having a ride back to the venue to compete. The competition started two and a half hours late. The team before us used a gimmick that left a substance (don’t want to give away their gimmick) on the stage. One of their team members did try to quickly sweep the stage once they finished but no attempt was made by BSM members to clean the stage or make sure it was safe for the next team dancing... a DANCER had to sweep the stage.

We were the last team to perform and by the time we collected our things from back stage all the committee members had left for the after party. There were discrepancies in the information we were getting from committee members, liaisons and judges throughout the competition. There was no one from the committee present at the judges meeting to clear anything up. From personally talking to the judges, I know they were just as disappointed and frustrated with the committee as we were. After the debacle that was the judges meeting, we didn’t have a ride back to the hotel and none of the BSM members were answering their phones. One of the live judges and Gagan had to drive us to the hotel and then to the airport 2 hours away.

In all honesty, this was the worst competition I’ve ever been to in all my 9 years. Lack of communication and un-organization were big problems. Judges and committee members weren’t on the same page, and neither were liaisons/ volunteers. The ride situation and time delays were a nightmare. While there I came to hear that there were seven committee members and a majority had no experience with bhangra what so ever. From the way this competition was run, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was true. The BSM committee did not appear to care about the teams competing, the judges or the MCs. Their main focus seemed to be Jaz Dhami’s appearance. If this is the case, next time they should just throw a concert/club event and forget about hosting any further competitions.

Despite the disrespect we got from the BSM committee, there were people who went out of their way and took care of us.

Jas Kandola- Thanks for going above and beyond to help out this past weekend; getting us information, rides and even a proper breakfast of cha and paronthay!

Gagan Dholi- despite having to perform with another competing team, you took the time to act as our team chauffeur the whole weekend. Without you we’d probably still be sitting at the airport.

Manjinder Singh Dhaliwal- Uncle ji was a judge for the live category at this competition. He is a prominent member of the bhangra community. Thank you for all your support and driving us to the airport.

Our winning 2nd place and best dancer awards couldn’t have happened without your guys support. I want to sincerely thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for showing love to brothers who were away from home.

To my brothers on SIAC, thanks for giving me the privilege to represent the first established bhangra academy in all of North America. I hope you don’t let this experience determine the way you view competitive bhangra. It was a pleasure dancing with a group of new dancers with so much potential.

On behalf of the entire Bhangra State of Mind committee, I would like to thank all the teams for taking their time out and performing at Bhangra State of Mind II. Thanks to all the teams our show was a success in the community.

We understand many teams had concerns regarding the competition and we would like to address them.

Mixer: We apologize for the delay of the mixer. The main reason why the mixer was delayed was because we were waiting on our hosts to arrive. We were not waiting on any teams to arrive because we would have started as planned if our hosts were present. Once they arrived we waited until they were prepared to begin the mixer.
The concern about one of the team’s dancers fainting during the mixer and us not caring is completely wrong. This situation was not brought to any of the committee members attention. Had we known what had happened, the situation would have been handled differently. Our committee was not aware of this until we read about it on Bhangra Teams Forums. We hope that the person is feeling better.

Tech time: The morning of tech time our DJ’s had their vehicles broken into and all of their equipment was stolen. The DJ’s had to run around last minute purchasing and renting out equipment to have enough sound and lighting for the competition. Stores were not open in the morning so we had to wait for them to open in order to get the equipment. Also, once they received all the equipment, they still had to set it up at the venue and program it. This was the only reason why tech time was delayed so long. Law enforcement had to be involved to help deal with the situation which also caused a delay.Competition: It started late since tech time was delayed and we didn’t want to rush teams getting ready or rush the show itself. During the show itself, we had volunteers informing teams that they were performing next. We agree there wasn’t as much communication amongst volunteers and teams, but the volunteers had enough information to guide teams. Also, no teams were told that they would lose points if their props weren’t in place in a certain amount of time. Volunteers nor committee members are “judges” to determine whether teams would lose points or not.Other concerns: The specific team regarding the need for transportation will be personally spoken with, but to address to the general public, our committee was not aware that Surrey India Arts Club was going to be flying into the airport in San Jose, CA whereas our competition is held in Sacramento, CA until the week of the competition itself. At such short notice it was difficult to find transportation for the team, so we had to speak with volunteers and other team members to help provide transportation to Sacramento for the team. A couple of committee members also had drove out from Sacramento to help with the transportation for the team. As stated earlier, we will be contacting the team directly to address their concerns.

As far as other questions or concerns teams may have regarding the competition, please do email us directly so we may address them in a timely manner.

lol, what a shitty response. I'm sorry, but that post wasn't apologetic at all. It just read as a list of excuses as to why you couldn't do your job as a competition. I didn't even attend and this post made me mad.

Everyone gets that running a competition is hard work and that the committee and volunteers alike have a lot to deal with both leading upto the competition and the weekend of. But if you can't cut it, don't run a competition. It's pretty clear from the numerous posts that BSM was not run properly so stop making excuses and take responsibility. Then come back next year new and improved and win back the trust of applying teams.

We apologize if our response fell short of an apology. Our intention is not to make excuses, but people asked us questions so we wanted to answer and clear any misconceptions. We are sorry for the way things were handled. We have learned from our mistakes and we will acknowledge all of our short comings in the future. We did the best we could under the circumstances and we will learn from everything that went wrong or could have handled better and do a better job. We had no intentions of making teams feel like they don't matter because they are the reason why we were able to have the competition. We would like to sincerely apologize to everyone of them.
