This is my personal review of the competition, this isn't intended to reflect the opinions of the team I participated with (VDS).
For a second year competition, I can understand some of the organization problems they had. I think some of the issues were unexpected but for the future the committee should try to over prepare to avoid some of these issues like the lack of water and having enough committee members for teams to reach for help with things like rides and answering questions.
The hotel: The staff was VERY kind and understanding and rather than harassing teams about noise or socializing/loitering in the lobby, they kindly took precautions to come to our rooms and politely ask the teams to remember to keep the noise level down because they were completely packed. I really appreciated that. There was a man who went down to the lobby to make a complaint about the teams. He wasn't complaining about noise or anything but simply about the bhangra dancers that were loitering or filling the halls. The staff member was SO supportive of the teams in the hotel and told the man that the teams were there for an event and that the hotel was taking precautions to give the teams spaces around the hotel. They even opened the conference room for everyone to practice, and even allowed teams to use it after midnight when they would usually have it closed. They didn't mind the teams practicing outside, in the parking lots, and even told me where we could go so that we wouldn't be interrupted by people driving by. I know most teams might overlook these kinds of things, but I've had committee members and hotel staff from other competitions not be understanding at all and just shoo the teams away to save their own necks. The hotel staff did a great job of accommodating the teams as well as their regular visitors.
The mixer: Thank you for having chilly chicken and mango lassi. The hosts were very kind and personable and the committee was very understanding about teams who were getting there late. However, it seemed a bit unorganized. I don't think any team knew exactly when the mixer was set to start. I think we were told to be there by 4:30 but even when we got there late, we were waiting for a while before anything really started up, and when it did, one team was still not there after the games initially started.
The choosing of the show order made absolutely no sense to me. The flip cup game with mango lassi was fun and I think the teams liked it over the usual musical chairs or picking of names out of a hat. However the way they chose the teams that went up to play seemed random. The team that lost the round stayed to play the next team and they didn't really say how they were choosing which team went up first. So, if you went last in the game, you were basically choosing between 1st or 2nd because all of the better spots in the order were taken. Also given that flip cup is normally a drinking game, the teams with younger dancers were already set up at a loss if theyve never played or heard of it. But then again its simply flipping a cup so moving on.
Tech time: SukhSingh07 pretty much summarized my same thoughts. Thank you for the subway!! I don't really understand the subway sandwich thing all these competitions do. Bread and vegetables doesnt provide much subsistence after tech time or through out an entire competition. Yes, it is just a complimentary snack that competitions aren't really required to give, but I know our team was so busy friday night and saturday morning that going out to grab food to keep us going with all the energy we're spending is too hectic. And when that happens, we realize at the end of the day that we've done 5 run throughs and barely had time to go out and get one meal all day.
The gift baskets had one or two energy drinks and a gatorade and the rest was basically junk food. Rather than spending money to get teams junk food that they cant even eat the day before a comp, I think comps should spend that money on just getting us water and maybe some stuff teams can really utilize (icy hot, fruits, protein bars, WATER, tylenol, first aid stuff, extra safety pins or something) but then again every competition is different and its up to them.
The after party: If youre going to charge people 20+ dollars to get in, give them their money back if they're only there for 30 minutes... Or consider team only after parties where only the people on the roster can come because a majority of the fights that happen are between people who aren't even associated with a team or the competition and they just ruin it for the teams who just finished busting their asses and just want to celebrate a great weekend together.
I hope the BSM committee will take some of these critiques into consideration for their next comp!
