Based upon what's been presented in the thread you could have as many as 9 out of 11 schools from the Big 10 (yes, there are 11 schools in the Big 10 :)) represented at a competition called "Big 10 Bhangra."

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out and if schools from other conferences will be included in this competition, or if other conferences (or regions) will have their own competitions. Hope it works out :)

Tech doesn't have a bhangra team- just fusion and raas. ...They need to get it together.

What would be the point of getting together these so called 11 collegiate school teams on one stage when the only association they have with each other has absolutely nothing to do with bhangra?

There is absolutely no correlation between the school's sports teams and their bhangra team. The way I see it, a few teams have a strong foundation and history of bhangra and will murder the rest. Some of them never competed as much and the rest will bring back Sukshinder Shinda's Soni Lagdi.

I don't really see the validity of the idea of picking a line-up based on something so random and so meaningless to bhangra. Not all these teams have bhangra teams nor have they proved themselves to be competitive. Why not simply have another competition like Blowout? Let the quality of the bhangra teams decide the line-up, not the quality of their school's athletic's program!

Largely a joke. I remember a friend mentioning it to me in passing, but have heard nothing since. I was referring to the fact that no one seemed real sure what was going on (myself included). I know Qurbani and the rest of the Tech teams by name. Do you know what they are called?

i agree with this. There are teams from schools in the big ten that have not competed nearly as much as others, and the competition would likely not be even in the quality of teams. I like the idea of having another collegiate competition though.

Also, dont forget Nebraska, Big Ten now has 12 schools...wonder if nebraska has a bhangra team?

I'm still on the fence about whether or not this competition should happen. I can see Pavan and Kinnell's argument, it makes sense. The other side of the argument is that it allows teams that have not previously been exposed to competition (and to the public) to get some exposure.

The major argument against this competition happening is that the level of the teams would not be equal. One idea is to have a "Big 10 Bhangra Showcase." Think of it kind of like Pao Bhangra at Cornell. Take the competitiveness out of it and relax the atmosphere. You can still have the experienced teams do their thing and the newer teams can get some exposure. It also gives the newer teams a chance to network with the more experienced teams and get some tips and tricks. And who knows, maybe the less experienced teams will bring something new and innovative to the scene. It would probably be a lot of fun to hang out with people from other teams, organizers, etc. as well, and would hopefully get people excited about Bhangra at more schools where it isn't as popular right now.

Look at this thread to see what other people thought of Pao Bhangra: http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/pao-bhangra-results/msg114449/?topicseen#msg114449. The quality of the dances at a "Big 10 Bhangra Showcase" may not be as high as it is at Pao Bhangra, but it might still work. Thoughts? Do you think this idea is marketable and that a big audience would show up to watch it? If it seems legit, is it better to have this "showcase" happen on one of the college campuses or in a bigger city like Chicago?

Calling all Big 10 University Bhangra Teams!!

We are looking into hosting the first Big 10 Bhangra Competition with schools from the Big 10 Conference hosted by NS Media. It will be held sometime in March and will be located in Indiana or Illinois depending on how many schools participate.

This isn't any ordinary Bhangra competition though. It will be more challenging, exciting, and fun. Think of it more as a "showdown". More details to come once officially announced. Please email us at nsmediaonline@gmail.com if your team is interested in competing. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place with prize money distributed accordingly.

If you feel as if we should broaden the spectrum of teams allowed, please email us your comments to nsmediaonline@gmail.com
We do not want to limit any interested bhangra teams. We would just like to see who is interested in competing before moving foward.

Once again, this is a competition you do not want to miss. New ideas are being brought to the table to make this an awesome show.

(This competition does not have any relation to a competition previously posted on BTF which was also supposed to be located in Indiana)

Thanks!
March of 2011.. you have all of the funding to throw this competition within 3 months? Release more event specific details as to venue, date, a registration package and not just say a competition will be organized for March when you're still brainstorming ideas...

It's kinda very hard to process and believe that you [any one really] can put together a quality show in just 3 months... consider later on in the year or perhaps next year! You can't just expect to have teams from all these institutes/places ready to compete in 3 months (when for some of them, as other members have pointed out) don't even have a team!

Anywhooo, best of luck. Throwing competitions isn't an easy task!

I guess you're missing the other side of my argument: There is no correlation between the bhangra teams. They're not from a certain region, have a certain team dynamic or dance a similar style of bhangra. There is no rivalry between these bhangra teams nor have they been competing against each other for years. I would draw a comparison to having a competition but only open to teams whose universities have animal mascot or universities with 2 lettered abbreviations. (ie: BU, BC, AU, UF) They're all silly and limits teams from competing/performing based on something so irrelevant to bhangra.

Why not simply have a collegiate competition/exhibition show? What advantages would you gain from excluding so many other college teams out there? Big 10 college pride? I doubt you'll get a larger audience compared with 10 teams with dedicated fanbases built from a few years of competing.

We were going to have a Big East Bhangra Competition at UConn but the venue we booked canceled our booking because of renovation so we couldn't go through with our plans. We had to postpone the competition to next Fall for that reason, but it would definitely be fun to have the winners of both competitions (Big 10 and Big East) compete.
