here's my theory, they wanted us to go grab our parents to read it, ergo making it aware to them that there will be a competition taking place which might make them want to go. hmmmm

How about being unique and different publicity style from other competetions, like everybody is SO trying to be SO different. It def got my attention as I started reading it in punjabi haha +100 to BAB fosure!!

Everyone has just commented on the lineup, but I'm actually curious as to what message BAB is trying to send knowingly publishing the lineup in a language many on BTF cannot read. +10 points if you explain without using the words "heritage" or "traditional".

so you have no problem with people dancing to a language many on BTF cannot understand but u take issue with a line up being posted in that same language? to me there doesn't seem to be any sort of message, it just shows that BAB has a solid appreciation for the language, which is admirable.

You wouldn't have experienced this, but there's a huge non-punjabi prejudice amongst a lot of bhangra community. Not saying this is related to that (it's not), what I'm saying is that when they posted the lineup, it wasn't available in English even on the website. Considering there are dozens of dancers on these very teams that are not punjabi/can't read pujabi (even if they can speak it), it was a bit of a slap in the face and sort of ties back to the prejudice I mentioned, even though that wasn't the intention.

Definitely a cool idea, and no problem with it, but would have liked to see an english lineup on the site (or making the image a link to a translated image). The site has the lineup now, but it wasn't actually up when they initially posted. It's really not a big deal, and I know they were just trying to be different and supportive (and they were mostly), but it still comes off in a poor way for non-punjabis, especially given the atmosphere at a lot of punjabi-centered comps

lol i think everyones experienced some sort of prejudice in the bhangra community. i agree with you that they should have posted the line up in both languages on the website just so non punjabi readers(which includes a large number of punjabi people who never learned to read the language) would be able to understand. i just think it's an over-reaction to see it as a slap in the face, especially since most of the promo vids i saw for previous BAB's were completely in punjabi. i dont speak for virsa and i cant claim to know their mindset but from what i have seen they try to project a pride for their roots (hence the name virsa) also the audience at BAB is mostly punjabi so it does make sense to have the line up in punjabi. i'm not gonna lie, on occassion i've been prejudicial towards non punjabis, but i have yet to see a situation at a comp where a non punjabi was harassed or taunted.

Perhaps its because they want to add a Punjabi aspect to the competition. Bhangra did originate in Punjab, so maybe they wanted to try something new and add a different dimension to this competition. I do agree that publishing the lineup in a language that not many people on BTF can read is mind-boggling, but, like I said, maybe its to create a foundation for this competition to add more of a Punjabi aspect.

And just to add to what Hardeep Singh ji said, not only dancers, some judges don't even understand or speak Punjabi, yet they are qualified to judge?

Love Punjabi, Speak Punjabi. Keep the Punjabi language alive.

sad to say this, but I have. It is weird because the harrasment or taunts never go towards a non-indian person (White/chineese/african-american/ etc.) but it goes towards those other desi's that aren't punjabi.

i definitely agree with jabar on the point that more pride should be taken by punjabis in their own language. the cultural identity of a state is unquestionably composed in no small part by that state's indigenous language. if this lineup posting was a celebration of that, then props.

Of course. We knew right off the back someone will end translating it. And if the case should arise that it wasn't, then we would have done so ourselves. We just wanted to try something new and it's apparent majority of you guys liked it
