Haha can't believe you guys are still going on this but not actually *saying* anything. Listen, every single american competition i've seen has communicated to teams and in general in english, or occasionally both languages. for a competition to make an image of just punjabi and post that without any english text-- that's not a thoughtless action. any competition would be polished enough to have discussed and know what they're publishing on behalf of an organization. ask elite 8 how many people see the text before something is printed or in a video on the internet.

and while prubh (whos only posts have been to support virsa/bab, so thanks for the consistency), hardeep singh, sangeen singh, baljot might see it one way if they read gurmukhi script or know punjabi (and joe from knowing the team), I've spoken to a bunch of people today who asked the same question as me.

Deal with it or not, I don't care. All I know is I was on teams where maybe 15% of us were punjabi, and what do the other 85% do when a competition says "we're not talking to you, let the punjabis talk"

Saleem,

It's their competition. They can market it and run it however they want. Jabar was clear on their intention. It wasn't about doing something different. It was about preserving the language. I agree that having an english translation would have been appreciated by the majority of users on BTF, the Punjabis and non-Punjabis who are unable to read gurmukhi, but I think this was more of a gimmick than anything else.

I seriously doubt that the BAB committee is bigoted enough to try to alienate demographics within the community, infer a "GTFO of our culture, you posers" message to non-Punjabis and then build a really big wall to keep us all out from taking roster spots on teams from hard-working Punjabi readers.

(For us gujjus, that wall would only have to be like 5 feet tall though to keep us all out)

Faizan its a sad display of Punjabi diaspora language politics. Out of all of the students at my school who took Punjabi while I was in undergrad, only one of them was interested in learning shahmukhi.

My first views on reading the line-up DAMN after a numerous number of comps taking place on btf and numerous line-up announcements what a great and unique marketing scheme. Every time anyone complains or goes wtf to the line-up just like i'm doing right now everyone on btf gets notified and guess what within 10 minutes they had 4 posts. constant notifications tht make people want to open a thread.

I really think everyone is taking it a bit too far with the whole they're trying to keep non-punjabis outta bhangra. First post for a translation was by Remy and i'm assuming he's punjabi. actually just did some stalking while typing this and Remy Basi is Punjabi (im pretty sure i seem mad creepy right now). You have to realise there are TONS of punjabis that can not read/write punjabi as well so are you saying BAB also is trying to keep them out of the circuit as well?

it was actually incredibly hard to get google translate to play nice with my translation. i had to write it in the translate dialog box. in general, though, GT is pretty bad for japanese, and recognizes random words whenever it wants, as well as plays havoc with word order.

gimme a break man :(

i don't get it :( the reason it says buhangura is because GT translates the actual japanese writing of "bhangra" as "Bangladesh." understandable, but annoying. KPGD got messed up because it decided to randomly play with the word order.

i swear i actually speak japanese~
