Big time bhangra teams sometimes pathetic?

Messages

OK so basically there is a mela in Sacramento held every year for LOCAL teams that are young and that love bhangra.they all preform their with their amateur and hard work coreo. then some A-HOLE bhangra team that is amazing and shows up and whoops a** on these little kids to make a quick buck and makes the kids look like their was not looked at? ok i understand that the big teams wanna be noticed but think about if your that good coming down to a mela where local kid teams preform to win and get THAT NEXT BHANGRA SUIT. OR tell tthier PARENTS THEY WON FIRST. and like basically if you come down to this mela in sacramento called chankata just so u could make money over little kids Your PATHETIC......

Teams need money for competitions/vardi/props/and whatever other expense needed. I'm not saying that the other teams don't need it, but performances are for the audience. Organizers pay good money for teams to perform and the best team wins. That's not pathetic, it's getting payed.

thats true to a certain extent? but u gotta also have some morals and respect for the kids that come their to preform Cause in the end isnt the point of bhangra to have fun and be apart of our culture not about looking better and making little kids feel like crap?

why feel like crap? skill and experience come with time, there's no shame in admitting someone is more skilled and experienced than you, it's what motivates people to learn and try to get on the next level. even if you're the worst team at a comp, doesn't mean you don't have any potential. learn and grow young one, like you said, enjoy it, even if things go wrong; there's plenty of examples of even big time teams messing up, it sucks but its a humbling experience knowing no matter how much u prepare things don't always work out. on the money issue just be proactive, do gigs, advertise yourselves, do shows, you'll make some cash and get more experience.

also i doubt this team was out to make u feel like crap, ya people act arrogant sometimes and like to show off but i've never seen a team go out of its way to try to shame someone purposely, don't think like that. the team that performed also put effort and time into preparing for this show, just appreciate that they took it seriously. try not to point fingers and call anyone pathetic, might be easy to judge someone like that but it does suck to be on the other side being judged baselessly.

I'm not really too sure what happened exactly as your initial post was a little vague but from what i have gathered I agree with hardeep singh and partyjatt. If that team just came in and did their thing (thus inevitably delivering a much more exciting, energetic and cleaner routine than what this other team had delivered) then its cool and that is fine as it just shows that all of their hard work had paid off. However, if that team had said or done something disrespectful to these little kids then that changes everything. What did they do exactly to make these little kids feel like crap?

the thing its more OF a mela not comp....... the point is that teams are only coming to these community events to win the prize money. i rather have a community team win this mela then a outsider team which no family members in the crowd know and just tear the stage up and make the mela teams who are from the community who should be able to have SOME CHANCE and win cuz its their community not the others outsider teams

i'm not gonna try guessing your age but you seem young and you obviously haven't been on these forums much, i'm just giving you the benefit of the doubt and being nice with my advice, don't expect everyone on here to show the same courtesy. but you're not gonna gain anything by expressing your grievances on here about this topic. don't blame the team for coming, if you wanna place blame, either blame the organizers for setting it up that way, or yourselves for not being able to compete on the same level. did you try to get to know the people on this other team and actually try to find out what they're really like? there is a nice side to the bhangra community, i've met plenty of dancers who have alot of skill and experience and have no problem opening up to anyone who comes along, even if they suck. at this point you just come off as really whiny. like you said it should be about having fun, don't see why your making a big deal bout not wining/getting money.

It cant be blamed on big teams, that apply for small shows like that. Its the Organizations fault for letting them perform.

It's the same as a big team coming to a small comp. to get an easy win. It happens. But thankfully for those kids in Sac. they have a few more opportunities year round there is a mela like every 4 months lol. I get what you mean though. I've been on the kids side of that story, and I was sad when the big kids team came and won. As a kid it isn't about the money its about winning you know? Tell those smaller teams to fikkar not! They'll become bigger and better as time goes by and then theyll be the big team! :D

Then it wouldn't be a competition for only juniors haha

So wait, all this is about is HPD coming to sacramento? really? HPD has been performing there for a good couple of years, and they always put on a great show, im sure the community requests them back because of that and so the organization asks them back. Now exactly how the money thing goes, im not sure. But if i had a team that was able to put on a show i would always ask them back. But the organization should have honorariums instead imo. Younger groups get 500, teens get 1000, and older groups get 1500 or something along those lines.

But to come on here to post this rant wasn't necessary at all. It's a mela, enjoy it, as well as Asha Sharma's guest host voice ;)

see its more of of a mela to the community then a COMPETITION??

I'm not sure what you're looking for by continuing to post? You can't have it both ways, either it is a competition and placings matter... in which this notion of community doesn't apply. Or it's a mela... in which the placings/money shouldn't matter, end of story. The fact that you're pissed is kind of sad, why worry about this stuff at all?

Validation through placings is temporary and superficial. Building friendships, self-esteem, and skill is true fulfillment. Make friends with the older teams and learn and improve.

this makes no sense! because a few years back when i didnt dance on v-dub i danced with a local team in sacramento and when heeray punjab deh came to the sac mela we were happy to see them their because its a team that we had looked upto. so if anything a popular team or w.e u want to call them come to a mela where younger teams are going to perform,(dont look at it as oh we are going to lose the comp or they are here for the money) those younger teams should take it as a learning experience! because i know this year at the sac mela we r thinking about performing and i dont want to perform because of the money, i want to perform so my family in sac and my friends that havent seen me perform at a competition have the oppurtunity to do so.

the mela has never once came out and said this competition is only for little kids so you cant really blame a team.

these older teams put in a lot more work than you probably think they do, alot of time effort goes into these routines and if they have a chance to perform the routine, its rewarding to see all your hardwork pay off
