First off, congratulations to all the placing teams! The show itself was organized pretty well, i gotta give it up to the BinghamtonBhangra crew for a good job! They took great care of the team, made sure we had what we needed, and kept askin if we wanted anything.

My two cents on the teams-

William and Mary- didnt get to see them perform, but theyre a great bunch of people! good luck on your future comps!

MIT- great improvement from Boston! routine was very modern, lots of gimmicks, they had one of the jodis with like neon lights on their backs, and it looked SICK when the lights went out and they were dancing. choreo and formations were pretty clean, the theme was pretty cool. lacked some tradition bhangra but overall very entertaining!

Spartan- incorporated almost all the major bhangra moves. lots of formations/gimmicks/stunts. had a lot of vcu's style. the mix needs a little better flow in transitions from one kind of beat to another

AEG- looked pretty solid, lots of energy as usual. Joe and Joey = one sexy jodi lol, Joey's sher in the beginning was awesome! the routine had a few mess ups, nothing extremely noticeable tho. Mix was, of course, sick! loved the song choices, formations were hott!

SMD- Props to these girls, their music shut off half way through so they started from the beginning! interesting mix, very different from the type of mixes in the scene right now. performance was clean and on point for the most part.

A couple of shoutouts,
MAJOR props to joe, navi, and faroghe for doing two different performances and killing both with a hell lot of energy and grace!

Kinnel- Jaggerbombs ftw! nice seeing you
Ankur- Koi Nii, happy birthday yaar haha
Dheerja- You still gotta sing with me girlll, you owe me next time lol

Just got back from Binghamton, SMD had a wonderful weekend at Bhangra Fever. Very very very well organized, I don't have a single complaint about the organization, and the organizers/liasons were so helpful and friendly/accessible. Other than some technical difficulties the show went well, I didn't get to see any of the other performances but I heard great things about all. This was a great start for Bhangra Fever, and I hope they continue this in future years, all teams should definitely consider applying.

Congrats to AEG and MIT, good end to the bhangra season :) I'll be posting our performance shortly, any and all comments/critiques are appreciated!

(and Ojala we'll have our live band practice asap. For real.)

First, let me say that it was an amazing weekend and I look forward to Bhangra Fever next year! My comments are below

+1's:
-The organizers were extremely helpful, always asking if we were all set, providing us with water, food. Shoutout to Raunak (sp?) who genuinely put the teams as first priority. I would say this is their forte, and its a good one to have.
-Although hotel looked shanty from the outside, it in fact had relatively large rooms AND non-anal security (we were super loud). Proximity to auditorium was good. Dope.
-Nice auditorium, good stage, changing rooms decent, etc
-Agree with Faizan, afterparty was a total shitshow. The bar was SO cheap ($5.75 for a patron shot?!!!!) [it was super packed and sweaty though]
-Meeting with the judges after was very helpful, they even said we could email them for further questions/comments. If teams didn't always get so heated with placings or display dissatisfaction with the judges (e.g. BBC06, I believe?) , maybe more competitions would do this...

Needs improvement:

-They could have tried to publicize it harder-- audience size was about 300 according to the organizers, but the auditorium could hold 800. Of course this was going to be a challenge being a 1st year comp
-Tech rehearsal was sort of a disaster. There were mix issues, lighting issues, and running extremely behind schedule. BUT the tech people pulled through and fixed almost all the problems!
-I am not a fan of MCs. They weren't that bad, but please keep their lines super short.
-The dance off thing at the end for free afterparty tickets resulted in the teams suffering through 100 plays of Mundian to Bach Ke, my most detested song. It was too long also.
-Please use actual "shuttles" next year, don't have convertibles or something. Atleast a minivan. I had to make several trips cuz the shuttles couldn't fit our team members.
-One of the aspects of a bhangra competition is meeting other teams, and I think something like a Friday mixer would have been appropriate.

~~~~~~~~
TEAMS: reviews and constructive criticisms
BX - Watched them from the side, for like 2 minutes. Sick mix, lines not bad. I saw some messy dancers, probably could've cleaned it up a bit. Sorry, didn't see enough of it to make meaningful commentary.
William and Mary - also saw them from the side for a few minutes. You had a few girls that were clearly off beat. My overall comment would say that you have to knock up the energy and choreo a few notches to get it to competitive level. Again, didn't see enough to make meaningful commentary.
Spartan- Shoutout to Kinnel for doing a great job, you were awesome. One of the few teams of the night that did several stunts, double death necklace and ending stunt which Sher Foundation has done before. Some cool hit points and traditional sequences variations such as jattan, although proper execution came dominantly from Kinnel only. Cool formations and choreo, but needs to be cleaned up-- you have some dancers that hit their formations late and it was obvious; there was even one girl who was half a beat off at times. Mirza segment was not cleanly executed, but jhummar was entertaining (Furr was hot). Overall, good performance but you have to clean your individual dancers and make everyone dance uniformly.
AEG- congrats on a well deserved first place. It was a very entertaining routine as always. Definitely had the best individual dancer calibur of the night. My personal critiques: Some of your dancers don't look like their having fun on stage at times though, expression goes in and out. Also, your energy started super strong but by the end one guy was barely lifting his legs. Finally, I feel like you had too many formation cascades; meaning, one person group does a move, next beat another person group joins what the first person/group is doing, then the next person/group etc. You had like 5 of these, but I felt after the second one it wasn't as interesting anymore. Anyways, It was mad fun chillin this weekend, this team knows how to have a good time. Shoutout to Faizan and the rest of the guys in the dressing room
SMD- congrats to this set of great ladies plus Salmaan. High energy dancers and kept it going strong even though their mix cut off mid performance and they had to restart. With the calibur of your dancers, I would say you have the ability to add more complexity to your dances such as more complex formations or move sequences. Also, I felt like there was too much non-bhangra music; you did your entire sial koti segment to metallica I believe lol. Anyways great job, high energy kept me on my toes, and it was great meeting many of you. PS I hope you let me keep Meryum "Cougar" Khan on my team.
*As a side note, I found it humorous that SMD used AEG's 2007-08 season 'bust forward in a line with one hand on the next person's shoulder' and Spartan used AEG's 2007-08 season 'put the music low and yell during "Sher Punjabi Putt Han" '
I have AEG, SMD, and Spartan's video, so PM me and I can figure a way to get it to you. Really fun weekend and looking forward to the Fall season!
We actually yelled "SPARTAN BHANGRA PUTT HAAN" which actually works really well with song name and our team name(in my opinion). I initially wanted this mixed into the mix, but I couldnt get a voice that could match Nirmal Sidhu's voice, so we decided to yell it.
********** *** Team Reviews for Bhangra Fever 2009 *** **********
BX Bhangra - Didn't get to see most of their routine. I heard Navi was sick though (mostly from Navi though :p) but other people on my team pointed her out too. lol Post this
William & Mary - A few things that could have been worked on. New costumes (current ones are 2001 shtyle). A more modern music selection and more folk dancing.
MIT Bhangra - Only saw the first few minutes. From what I saw, you guys were clean and the glow in the dark thing was sick. I have yet to see your entire dance and I cannot critique you guys until I have seen it. But here are a few things I can definitely say. I could see hair underneath your paghs which means that they need to be tied properly. Plus your turlas were not tucked in at all. I liked the fact that your fits were unique. I'm not a big fan of themes in bhangra (should be reserved in Raas & Fusion), but I need to see the entire video! And Kapil, I only watched you. Too sexy, bro. ;D
AEG - So after our performance, they refused to let us back into the auditorium. We watched from the side of the stage and you guys were sick. Please take this critique with a grain of salt because I could only see you from the side. From what I could see, you guys were amazing. At times, you guys made your performance look easy because your expressions were great. At other times, it did look like you guys were tired. Overall, you guys had the same style of dancing and hat was way too sick. Congrats on the win - easily well deserved.
SMD
- I miss your live segment! You guys should have kept that. I initially thought the sound glitch was a gimmick lol, but you guys handled that well. I really disliked the fact that you guys did non-bhangra songs like every other song. To me, that's a gimmick and doing it more than once seems tacky. You girls, however, were much cleaner than other performances and the two middle girls were SICK! I didn't realize how big of a collab SMD really is and mad props!
********** *** Competition Review for Bhangra Fever 2009 *** **********
PROS:
- Responsiveness of Bhangra Fever Board. At the afterparty, Ravi M. made sure that we were happy and apologized for any inconveniences. At the competition, board members were quick to get our problems solved. I'd be able to call Ravi M or Parth P at any time and get my questions answered. Mad props.
- The show flowed from one act to the other. I personally feel that the MCs did a pretty decent job. It wasnt too long and it wasn't bad.
- Stage was great. Lighting was pretty good too!
- Judges were accessible and chill to talk with. The fact that we got to talk to them put some of our concerns to rest.
- Afterparty. It was crowded at times. But moments later, the entire bar would be empty! And drinks were ridiculously cheap. UV-Shots for $1 and Jaggerbombs for $3! OMFG - Every Gujju's dream come true! The dance floor was crowded at times, but I always able to find people to do bhangra with and girls to dance with. My team and I had an amazing time.
CONS:
- Need more definite liaisons. Liaisons need to stalk teams (and be with them the entire weekend essentially). I realize that liaisons just ended up being people on Fever Board, but recruit other people outside of Board to help out so that the crucial people don't need to tend to the team.
- FOOD! Provide lunch. CSUN, Miami Mayhem, Garbafest all provided lunch. Snacks are nice, but we need real food too.
- Mixer. There needs to be one for sure. If teams are not able to come, that's unfortunate for them, but it's nice to meet other people through forced ice-breaker activities. It promotes the social aspect of your competition.
- There needed to be a SEPARATE afterparty shuttle for Binghamton University people. When we jumped on to the shuttle initially, we filled it comfortably. Then we picked up Binghamton University people and they filled the entire walking isle while standing FOR the entire ride. That sucked for them and sucked for us too. The poor girl next to me was sitting on another girl who was sitting on another girl who was splitting a seat. Yikes!
- As Kapil pointed out, no more Mundiya to Bach Ke Rahe. By the 12th time that segment played, us team dancers were boo-ing it. Perhaps pick more variety or a better song (can I suggest "Punjabna"?) In addition, having teams sit down was a buzz kill. We want to dance. Please let us.
- Why did exhibition teams (Binghamton Bhangra & BU Masti) get their own dressing rooms but competing teams had to share? (3 teams per dressing room?)
- No competition should allow one dancer to dance for more than 1 team. Joe & Navi, I give you props for doing two dances and I know its tough like no other. But it's really not fair to the other teams. The order of performances need to be randomized to be fair.
- Judges need to follow the RUBRIC that the Competition provides them. We've beaten this fact to death here on this board. If a competition has a rubric that gives points for having stunts in the routine, as a judge, you must do the same. To disregard it is not fair.
