Bruin Review

Okay, so now that I'm fully rehydrated and can't talk due to not having a voice and since everyone is still knocked out (Boo!) I'll go ahead and write up my review.

First of all O- M -G all the teams were off the hook times 390209320!! I would have hated to be a judge last night... even though I don't agree with the places I'm going to not focus on that but focus on what I thought each team brought and what in my opinion they could have done better. No joke each one of you guys deserved to place last night... Bruin has always been my favorite competition and yes, I’ve already bought my ticket for next year.
The show was LONG as usual! The show didn't start promptly at 6pm it was around 6:30-6:45pm (not shocked!) the poor judges were sitting there since like 5:15. It was a fun show. I always go for the teams but the exhibition teams were awesome this year as well. Money was def. well spent! We didn't go to the afterparty or preparty so I can't comment on that but people in my hotel said it was wack..
Sharmila has an awesome voice! I love him... what I don't understand is competitions pay THOUSANDS of dollars to have them come out... WHY do you sing to a cd?! When he performed live I had goosebumps but as soon as he started singing to a cd he looked so fake and retarded. I still love him though! Dr. SUZE as Sharmila called him was cool... I think Sharmila wasn't digging him on stage but WHATEV! He tried to get the 100 people left in the audience pumped up!

Host: WTF! So, I could have sworn he said he was punjabi and then he flipped the switch and was hindu. No disrespect to anyone but he an idiot! Some of his jokes were funny but for the most part he kept repeating the same stuff over and over again.... we've already found all the guju's, hindu's, punjabi's, mexicans (I mean philappino's) in the audience let’s make another joke yah?! Highlight the fact that he was as tall as the first place trophy!

Exhibition 1 (Cause I don't remember your guys names! Sorry!): Was cute... you guys had a lot of energy and the little kid in the blue stood out to me! You guys are all very luck you live in a place where there are bhangra gods everywhere keep working with whoever taught you guys and I'm sure you guys are what we'll be coming out to watch in Bruin 2019.

VIBE: Intro video was too sick! There were a lot of errors and small mistakes. I loved all the gimmicks and tricks... VERY unique and creative. "Paaki Kanak,' was really cool. I was scared that someone would have slipped on the kambal? I'm glad you guys are back but there is a LOT of room for improvement! You guys were very entertaining. Good luck to you guys in the future! Going up first SUCKS. I LOVED THE GIRL FLIP IN THE AIR!!! VERYYY SICK!!!!!! POST YOUR MIX

APD: Intro video was on FIRE!!! I loved it!!! I love you guys! You guys are one of my favorite teams out right now and I had expected great things. You guys were really good because I've seen your performance numerous times I wasn't too excited during your performance. BUT, the "4 man make it rain Kobe" was THE best stunt of the night HANDS down!! There were a few errors that could have made you guys look cleaner but other than that you guys were good. You guys are going places... and I wish you guys the best of luck in the future!! POST YOUR MIX

DRP: I love you guys... You guys had mad energy! I loved the introduction with the house and how you guys can get all those people to be on key. I thought you guys were good but besides the intro house thing I wasn't blown away! The mix was really old in terms of the songs that were used. I didn't think you guys would place.... (sorry) But, you guys are one of my fav's in general! It wasn't anything we haven't seen before and thats why I didn't think you guys would place. Congrats on your win... good luck in the future!!!!

Jawani: Oh girls you make me so PROUD!! I'm so sorry you guys didn't place. I loved your routine but something was missing. I felt the wow factor you guys normally have was missing. Again, because I've seen your routine I felt like you didn't bring anything new and special. BUT, you girls are the bomb.com for sure! I hope Amy got to hit up a beach and you girls enjoyed your stay in CALI! I loved your umbrellas too cute! You guys did great! I loved your mix it was very unique and definitely had me pumped watching you guys! Good luck in the future!!!! POST YOUR MIX!

Exhibition 2: AWWW CUTEST TEAM EVER!!!!!!!!! I loved your guys mix it was AWESOME! I think KJ coached this team and omg too cute! Bruin 2019 I'm telling you!!!

LBC: The reason I drove out right after my last final. I love you boys! You guys make bhangra look so easy and so graceful. No special gimmicks, no cute little kids, no props, no nothing and you guys stole the show. The entire venue was screaming LBC! I agree with another poster who said it was the 07 LBC for sure but with better energy! Stole UCI's gimmick could have been a little more unique. The lights, camera, action guy wasn't needed (Sorry dude!) but I LOVED LBC DIZ IT! Loved it! You guys are and will always be one of my favorite teams. Congrats on placing!! You guys kept it real didn't change your style when everyone else did!

BMW: Going after LBC is just like going up first with 10 people in the audience. Sickest SICKEST intro video I'd even say the best one of the night!! I wasn't expecting 1/2 of what you boys brought. OMFG! You guys WERE the best team of the night everything was so unique and different I mean... as Russell Peters once said... YOU guys were Mind BLASTING! loved every minute of it! I loved the kundey swings, the stands, the flowers; I loved the mix, the energy, SOORMAY!!!!! I honestly don't know how you guys didn't place.... I'd be pissed but, its cool because Viewers Choice BABY! I honestly think you guys have improved a great deal and it shows that even without Abhijeet you guys can pull off a sick ass routine! I loved the scratch and sniff marker colors you guys choose for your new vardian... don't lie you know thats where you guys got that from! Good luck to you boys in the future! POST YOUR MIX... post YOUR MIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SFU: Wow!! I really enjoyed your guys performance. It was clean and very energetic! I loved your guys outfits. I believe you hit all stunts without error! I don't remember much else but you guys were the best Canadian team that came out! Good luck to you guys... POST YOUR MIX!!!!

Empire: Okay, so I was expecting the same routine that they've been performing everywhere BUT they switched it up! This is the first time watching you guys in real life and WOW! I know why everyone is dying off you guys! You guys were really good... you guys had perfect session who can hold a candle up to that?! I can't say anything really bad about you guys! Great JOB!!! Congrats on placing! POST YOUR MIX!!! Wait, do you guys the same score sheet as KJ now!?

No... You guys are misunderstanding me or I didn't make myself clear. I know there are a lot of punjabis that speak hindi. He came out asking the audience how many punjabis are in the building and then the crowd screamed and he was like “yeah, I'm punjabi too,” but didn’t say he was hindu-punjabi. To me it seemed like for half the show he was punjabi... and then something came up about being hindu and the rest of the show he was hindu. I know many punjabi's are punjabi-hindu but he confused me and I felt that he was doing it to please the audience and not being true to himself.

No disrespect to any punjabi-hindu's that WAS NOT MY POINT AT ALL.. I'm so sorry if it came across as such!!

no means to be harsh just an honest review.

Vibe: no lie i was shocked at how far this routine was from bhangra. i saw cheerleading stunts hindi film moves and alot of swing dancing. it was shocking how modern bhangra could get

APD: it was an APD routine. they r good at what they do. props on the ending stunt. still, the spazing arms on jugni need work. execution was well. not my style but i enjoyed it

DRP: LOWERS!! (ok ok non-bias review) I wasnt able to see last years routine because i was backstage, but i really saw a major improvemnt from dda props to that. the routine was a little more traditional +1 ! and the girls stepped it up alot this year. it was hands down placing worthy.

Jawani: finally got to see u all in person. I thought they looked stronger in videos. well executed ladies and way to bring a traditional factor to bruin. I wasn too impressed with the mix, but i was impressed with the girl in pink (she kind of looks white) <----ur just too sick as hell i love how u dance. the ending was weird.

LBC: ayeeeee!! LBC LBC LBC..well done. didnt think they would place honestly. they had well execution..nice way to bring jasmine out..visible mistakes..ONE GUY DID THE SEXIEST PHUMANIYAN IVE EVER SEEN ..that basically won me over. well done.

BMW: different. im always iffy on BMW but this routine was sick..i thought they would place..nice way to use formations and bring back BABER SHER! (lowe that song) and im soormays biggest fan so +1000000 ..overal well executed i liked the tear drops. it wasnt the cleanest routine but way to step it up!

SFU: i was excited to see them..but their choppy mix distracted me from watching..wasnt too impressed.

Empire: called first the minute i saw u guys. cleanest team of the night. u guys r good at wat u do. i wish i saw more out of the girls, but none the less congrates.

I agree with Jaideep. Not sure how you just switch it up like that...or how that makes sense. When I read the initial statement in the review, i was shocked by how it was said.

Yea sorry Raji, but that was a pretty bad review. First off, I think that the MC just said he was Punjabi because it's the 'cool' thing to do at a bhangra competition. From his actions I wouldn't have guessed he was from a Punjabi family. But as an MC he wasn't too bad, he had some funny moments and his improv was decent, his punjabi sucked though.

I think to be good at bruin you have to have: hip hop and a lot of bass in your mix and something in the set that will get the audience to cheer every minute or so. All the placing teams did a good job at covering these bases.

If you are overly sensitive I don't suggest reading my review, this is my attempt at offering a real critique (not just congratulating everyone) which involves criticizing!


Vibe: they honestly looked like a fusion team, it didn't seem like they even made an attempt to adjust to 2009 bhangra standards. They overdid it with random acting and gimmicks, I think they were expecting more of an audience reaction which they didn't get. Girls had much more energy than the guys. Intro video was cool though.

APD: pretty much the same set they've been using this year. You guys remind me of KJ but your dancers aren't at the level KJ's dancers were and some of your dancers don't have that stage presence yet (which could be seen from facial expressions). There was no part in the act that was exciting to watch - at some parts it seemed like the energy dropped when it should have picked up(like when you guys got in a bunch and did the chaffaish move). I think if you really want to be a good team on a national level you should try to change from the old KJ style and come up with something unique, for example try changing youf jhummar style. And you guys need to learn to tie better paggan, the thurley shouldn't flap around.

DRP: I was sitting fairly close to stage so I couldn't see the formations which has always been a big part of any drp set. The intro was pretty cool, very suited for the bruin audience. The dance was fast so they naturally had good energy and I liked the mela scene, but I'd scrap the kabaddi segment. At times it seemed like the move didn't match the speed of the song and it didn't look as good as it could have. Either way, another good drp performance.

Jawani: the singer was really good, but it was kind of awkward that you guys used props during the live and then again when the music started. Maybe try not to cover so many types of dance just in the live, it can make the live part look almost randomly thrown in. You guys were fun to watch once the music started. It was nice to see good smiles without going overboard with aggressive facial expressions. Maybe it was because you were performing for a new audience but it seemed like at times you girls were holding back and not going "all out" on the moves. But still a good performance.

LBC: the team I was looking most forward to watching. These guys have a very strong stage presence and I think that is what makes up for them having such a relaxed style. Their smiles alone make them fun to watch. The choreography to gadi mor ke was badass (aside from the little bit taken from VCU). On a side note, I wonder what went through the older judges heads when they saw the easy-e gimmick - "the crowd is cheering...it must be something good..."

BMW: you guys had good energy and some cool ideas/choreography but you need to go over basics. It seemed like every dancer was trying to outdo the dancer next to him and it ended up looking sloppy. The khunda segment was very creative but some of the moves required a lot of precision to pull off and it wasn't there. Some guys couldn't hold their smiles and some lost energy by the end. The Soormay gimmick was cool, didn't see that coming. Also, I found it funny that you guys apologized for kicking your khundey the first time and turned around and did it again, comon now...

SFU: the performance was pretty good but nothing that stood out. It was nice to see a team using traditional elements but the whole set didn't flow well. I'm not a big fan of using saap in the middle because having to stop and pick them up kills the momentum, same thing with going into a full team stunt and then dancing again. I liked the mirza but some of the moves you tried didn't go with the tempo.

Empire: I don't agree with their style but damn they're synchronized. As far as modern bhangra goes I don't see how they can improve. Although, it might be because I've seen their past performances, but they have become kind of predictable: intro with everyone just standing, reveal the hidden guys or girls, formations, flip the girls, formations, something written on the vests, formations, some type of "empire" sign at the end. I thought they were going to beat drp and they did.

I didn't bring up mixes because every mix was done pretty well and they sounded crazy with that system, I thought LBC's was the best. It's too bad Sharmila couldn't sing with a live band, he sounded amazing. Dr. Zues is a pedophile.

And to the bruin committee, a 6' tall first place trophy? Seriously?

To All the teams:
Definitely an amazing job, I really do feel bad for what the judges had to go through since everyone had sick intro videos, mixes,and routine. Bruin weekend was a chiller. Congratulations to BE, DRP, and LBC!!

P.S - BMW - You guys definitely stepped up BIG TIME... I definitely hope you guys continue doing what you do best... both on and off stage SOORMAY - It definitely brought back memories when I used to watch you guys kill it on stage.. and the fact that I had the opportunity to represent soormay was definitely a privilege....

P.S.S - PCC PDL/YBE Collab (Exhibition) - To my kids, you guys did an amazing job and I just wanted to publicly mention how proud i am watching you guys have fun on stage... It was definitely fun coaching you guys...

Now about BRUIN,

It was really fun to watch all the teams. I really enjoyed watching LBC and Jawani. I'm glad this year's bruin was more organized then last years. Also, the afterparty was not a big ugly mess like last year.
