As mentioned here, I believe having a BTF Bhangra Wiki could be a great resource for our community. BTF continues to be a great place for two-way discussion amongst peers, but it can be supplemented by a repository of information and learning material which is more one-way. A place where new dancers can learn about bhangra moves, learn the origins of different concepts in bhangra, where to get vardiyan, props, or instruments, etc.
Bhangra Teams' Forum will be rolling out the new BTF Bhangra Wiki next week. In preparation for this, I've attached below the planned Compendium of articles that will be in the Wiki. We welcome your feedback on this compendium and how it can change/grow.
An important note for all BTF members:
I founded BTF because I wanted a better place for our community to meet, discuss, and grow. The wiki is an extension of this-- I hope that it will be an excellent resource for everyone from new dancers to team captains. The beauty of the Wiki style is that it is only as strong as its contributors. These articles will start off empty and it is up to YOU to populate them with the knowledge in your head. It is up to you to put aside your opinions and prejudices in order to put helpful, objective material into the Wiki. And it is up to you to take the initiative to help the bhangra community and next generation of dancers by adding information to the Wiki.
No one wants debates on modern vs traditional bhangra in the wiki. Please keep ongoing discussion/debate within BTF itself (I don't care how strongly you feel or how right you think you are).
The wiki may fail. If it fails, it is only from lack of input from BTF members; certainly the framework will be there. Please don't let that happen.
Some additional notes:
I considered adding a listing of Bhangra Teams and Bhangra Competitions in the Wiki. However, that is a separate part of BTF which is (slowly but surely) on it's way.
I anticipate a second add-on which will have dholis and teams for hire where they can enter their location (ZIP code). Then people looking for performers can find local entertainers. Please contact me if you'd like to help create this.
As I announced earlier, Ram Mahalingam (Saab) will be actively moderating the Wiki. Please help him and respect his edits.
I took the list of Bhangra steps from an earlier thread. We have videos of some of these steps which will be embedded in the Wiki. We'll be reaching out for volunteers of (good
) dancers to help record additional videos.
Lastly, the technological hurdle that that this was waiting on was an auto-login feature, which is now complete. You will be automatically logged into the Wiki once you log into BTF.
