I've discussed it with the moderators and community at large, and it is not a feature I'll be implementing any time soon. There are a few reasons:
1. It can't be effectively moderated. Any user can just spam garbage, trash talk, and hate, and it would be 10x more hassle than the rest of BTF to moderate. And I do not want an un-moderated stream of talk on BTF.
2. It takes up server resources. A real-time (AJAX) chat is possible, but nothing's free. I would rather dedicate these resources to making BTF as fast as possible, including super-fast downloads (greater than 1000 KB/s).
3. It doesn't leave a searchable record. A lot of the value in BTF is the ability to search for existing content (dances, songs, knowledge, guidance).
Users who want chat have generally turned to Ventrilo, which seems fine for everyone as it also gives audio. Hope that explains my take on it.
