BTF Community Idea: Choreography Ladder

We have a very active Mixing Ladder on BTF and I had an idea for capitalizing on this momentum and running an adjacent choreography ladder. Given below are my thoughts on how this might work,

Logistics:
1. Teams would consist of 4 - 6 dancers.
2. You would be given a mix from the Mixing Ladder itself to work on and a two week window to prepare a 30sec to 1 min choreo to it.
3. Teams upload their video to YouTube and Moderators put it up and the community votes and comments.
4. Teams could be divided into tiers e.g I, II, II, since we will have way more teams than mixes available and at the end of a 4 challenges ( i.e. two months) teams can be demoted or promoted to new tiers in addition to moving places every two weeks.
5. Dress code could also be established for teams - either full out bhangra gear or casuals
6. Declare a winner after a Season ( could be decided how long this is )

Benefits:
1. Recognition for lesser known teams and more recogonition for dancers of teams
2. Platform for dancers to get a more personal feedback since 4 person video would put a closer degree of inspection on dancers rather than a team environment
3. The Choreo Ladder could also be used as a test bench for developing tournament marking rubrics, e.g. each contest could be given 3-4 aspects to focus on, e.g. traditional, gimmicks etc. and then the community would be asked to give a score to the team on those individual categories.

Cons:
1. Moderator Time; this ladder will take a lot of organizing - I am willing to help the effort on all fronts
2. I cant thing of anything else???

So what do you guys say? Can we do this? Is it a possibility or just a futile dream ?

I think this is a fantastic idea. It plays along the lines more so of the underground bhangra scene, whereby instead of following thru with the generic bhangra steps seen mostly at comps, here we can have extremely talented dancers face off against there peers and create new steps.

It would be great too because it can help bridge the gap between different styles of bhangra. This format would allow top dancers from Canada face off against the best here in the states. It can be a west coast v. east coast thing, either between members of colleges or club teams.

This is great idea, and I think something that everyone has been itching to do if they can't find a team to get on. Just go to the gym with some friends and pop out a 2-3 min thing and see whose got better skills. Friendly competition and would be fun to watch.

Since there seems to be decent interest - anything you guys would like to see in the format or the ladder lets put it out there. I will compile all the ideas and prepare a preliminary report / plan and get a hold of moderators or more influential figures on the scene ( aka star power ) and get the ball rolling :D

Creative idea xlnc and I'm sure it would be cool to see this actually happen, but I'm not sure how "do able" it is.

Are these 4-6 dancers basically selected individuals on existing teams? If so, even preparing like a 1 min choreographed segments require some time. With school back in full swing & their own full team practices to worry about, it was might be a little difficult to accomplish.

If you're talking about creating new "mini teams" with 4-6 people (who could be from any Bhangra team) for the sole purpose of this "choreography ladder" - the chances of that happening are quite slim. Furthermore, there are a lot of people that frequent BTF who are not affiliated with any team, are simply "retired," or don't live close to other dancers.

There is definitely a lot of coordination, organization, and participation needed on the back end (behind the scenes). I can tell you that to keep the mixing ladder flowing smoothly, there is a lot of communication that goes on between the mixing mods to keep things straight and organized. We've been learning as we go too, so I only hope things get easier on everyone participating.

Not trying to discourage you with my post, just stating a few critiques on the idea. I'm sure BTF's moderators would support you in your efforts if you wanted to give this a shot.

You bring valid points Basim, I just threw the 4-6 dancer requirement just because I thought it would be a good number, but as you bring up some valid points and if there is enough interest it could even be brought down to 1-3 people, essentially you can dance in your basement and still be on the ladder! That would be cool. Retired, semi-retired*, old, young, teens - it could be anyones platform.

As far was mixes are concerned, the mixing ladder is already 3 weeks ahead, and mixes from last years ladder are also available.

What do you think? Any shot this could happen ?

Basim brought up some good critiques of the idea and it seems like a choreography ladder would be a lot more complex to organize and run smoothly, but its definitely worth a try if you can iron out the kinks.

One suggestion I thought I'd throw out is about the "Tiers" mentioned in the original post. Perhaps these tiers could be different divisions in the ladder based on number of dancers, allowing for more flexibility for people who would like to participate but can't seem to get a certain number of dancers together. For example, having a solo division, a duo division, a division for 4-6 dancers, etc. - something along those lines. This would definitely be more complicated to organize and monitor but I think more people would be able to participate with this type of format.

Also, maybe someone involved with organizing the challenges for WBBC, as Ankush hinted at, can provide some insight as to how to go about this or even help out with giving this idea a trial run.

sick idea

throw a little prize money in the mix and you can probably spark some serious interest, im not talking like thousands, but if you're declaring winners after "seasons", a couple hundred bucks sounds possible

maybe have a $10-$15 'registration' fee, and use that as funding

As others have said, this is a sick idea. But, this will require much more planning and time to get off the ground. It would be fun to watch this though.
