Hello Everyone!

The time has come to finally begin our Mixing Ladder! If you haven't joined yet, you still can, just post/pm one of the mix ladder mods
Here are the rules!

Challenges:
  • Everyone on the ladder can challenge someone on the ladder up to 3 places above them.
  • You can challenge someone on this thread by leaving a comment containing your rank and name, and the person who you challenge rank and name. (Example: 3. X challenges 1. Y)
  • Denying a challenge two weeks in a row results in a forfeit for the challenge
  • In the event of cancellations, the DJ who was cancelled is free to challenge/defend again.
  • You can not place a challenge if that DJ is already being challenged, so please read the thread first (we'll update the challenge thread as well)
  • All challenges will be recorded on every Tuesday night and the mix will be given out on every Wednesday to both DJs
One of the Ladder Moderators will be in charge of your challenge and you must PM or e-mail that moderator your mix.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR BTF EMAIL IS ACCURATE. To better handle attachments, we'll likely move to e-mail for submissions.

Submissions:
  • NO TAGS!!!
  • You will be PM'd about the challenge once it is posted.
  • You have until Friday (11PM EST) of the following week to provide your mix or it will count as a loss (so each challenge is roughly a 10 day process from challenge->submission)
  • Voting ends Monday night (11:55PM EST) and a winner will be determined the Tuesday Afternoon.
  • Whatever challenge you win, you will switch places with that person on the ladder.
  • The winner will be determined by comments/poll on the thread (minimum 5 posts on the forum to start, subject to change)
  • Once the challenge is complete and the next weeks thread is up, you can do whatever you want with your submission.
Note that this system means DJs can be involved in challenges only once every two weeks. We're trying this new system to give the forum some consistency, in a month everone will know when to expect challenges, when to expect the mix, and when to submit. BTF audience will know when to expect submissions and when voting finishes. Hopefully this will prevent 'ghost challenges' where the DJs agree to submit 3 weeks after and then it never happens. We want to keep the ladder moving so that we can pump out awesome music for everyone.

We'll have a weekly thread with an updated ladder ranking for each week's challenges.]You can begin the challenges on this thread.

Re: **BTF OFFICIAL MIXING LADDER**

Can there be some clarification about what happens when Person X ( rank 10 ) beats Person Y ( rank 8 ). Do they switch spots? Or does Person X get to rank 8 while Person Y drops down to rank 9 (and Person Z gets caught in the crossfire and drops to rank 10)?

I ask only because the situation (say rank 4 vs rank 1) can occur where those two people keep challenging each other and keep flip-flopping ranks (or rank 4 keeps losing but keeps challenging). I also concede this could be contrived.

they switch places. and yes, there could be a situation of repeated challenges. if that does arise we'll figure out something.

How would ranks 2 & 3 get to 1? do they have to challenge 4 and then 1?

You can challenge upto 3 spots ahead, so they can directly challenge 1. In the event of multiple challenges, the first challenger gets priority, and the challenge that was late gets ignored and the challenger is free to challenge/be challenged.

You guys need to rethink this various aspects of this.

First of all, you should only be able to challenge the person above you when you are in the top 10. Why? Because you're belittling the rise to power on the ladder. What values do the positions of 2 and 3 hold if all you need to do is get to 4 to reach 1? For the rest of rankings, it might make sense to have an challenge anyone UP TO 3 spots above you to allow for faster advancement and make it seem less disparaging for those lower in rankings.

Second of all, ignoring a match from the beginning of the week should be allowed infinitely without being kicked out of the ladder. The consequence? Instant loss of the match. If you've been challenged and you have a busy week and can't compete, then fine, you lose a rank and the person gains a spot without having to do anything. I agree that if they forfeit at the end of the week after the other mixer has already put in work, then fine, begin the process to kick them out for a dick move. (Both parties must confirm acceptance of the match at the beginning to prevent inactive members from wasting weeks. No response? Instant win.)

Third, there needs to be a consequence of someone in a lower rank challenging someone higher and losing. For example, them losing the ability to challenge anyone until they've been challenged by someone else. Keep this limited to the top 10.

And finally, keep the competition open to new mixers (who would start at the very bottom). The ladder only arranges itself in level of skill if it continues for a very long time so you want the ladder to continue for years. With that said, explicitly state that anyone can still join so this doesn't seem like a closed event. You want to keep this going in the long run. Ladders are not tournaments. The point is not elimination until there is a winner. The point is running indefinitely until the ladder sorts itself in terms of skill.

You are not kicked off the ladder if you decline twice, that's clearly a typo. You would obviously only lose the challenge, I'll fix that for Jaideep.

The Ladder Mods can decide if they want to switch the scoring for top 10 (it's not so straightforward though, since you'd have to carefully plan what to do between 8-13 in terms of when you switch to single-rank challenge and when you keep 3-rank challenge. there are a few ways to handle it, all with pros/cons).

I'm not sure how I feel about penalizing a losing challenge. Essentially your solution is a token-based idea, you defend your spot you get a token to challenge ahead. But potentially this could paralyze the ladder if a bunch of people lose their challenge and are waiting for challenges below them. If we have high volume of mixes, then it works. But otherwise we could be preventing a couple DJs from mixing in consecutive weeks, especially if we move to a 1-rank challenge only in the top 10. Scenario: #5 loses to #4. next week #4 loses to number #3. Now both #4 and #5 are waiting on #6 to challenge and lose to #5 to pass the token along. It's not inherently bad, but we could get into sticky situations

I think first we need to promote as many challenges as possible while we have momentum and energy. Yes, the climb to the top is a bit negated with 3-rank challenges, but the idea is to percolate the top 10 DJs first (and give people who are lower ranked but skilled an opportunity to not wait 30 weeks to get up there). Once we've gone a few weeks I think we can install a more strict system in the top 10 to start filtering the top 10 correctly.

+1 to both of these ideas/statements. I was going to mention both of them when I had an opportunity to write out a more detailed post. Part of the idea behind this whole BTF mixing ladder concept is to stay somewhat active - if a mixer doesn't respond to a challenge within a week, they should be moved down in ranking.

Maybe even make a "strike" system (keep a "*" symbol next to their name in the first post of this thread if they get a strike - that way if the mixer is basically a "no show" for 2 different weeks, he/she will be kicked out of the ladder and can rejoin (start from the bottom) at a later point if wanted. The exception being if the mixers inform the Mixing Ladder mods ahead of time that they will be out of town or busy with other priorities (not last minute e-mail/PM).
