Hey Guys,

Saleem and I are going to host an open forum discussion next Wed to discuss updating the forum platform, future project ideas, etc. We've been discussing things amongst ourselves for the past 2 years and frankly we are both busy with careers, we need help and we need to get organized.

there's a lot of interest from different people, so I think having a chance to explain what we see as the way forward and getting feedback and other ideas is a good idea. this will also help weed out the talkers and the people we can rely on to actually help.

So please, if you're at all interested try to get free on wed and participate (even if it's just listening). There are projects large and small, both technical and non-technical, and the more people involved then the more fun the forum will be.

As an example of ideas:
  • moving the forum to a new platform
  • Expanding CTL to a complete ecosystem for teams and competitions (complete from registration to advertising to placings)
  • coding widgets for the current platform
  • reviving btf mixer ladder
  • formalizing BTF wiki with content in massive threads so new members don't feel overwhelmed
  • adding tags to posts for quicker searching (i.e. live vs music, competition vs non-competition, team names, competition names, etc)
  • Other smaller projects
So keep posted for info, but it'll be next wed, around 6:30pm PST / 9:30 pm EST. Sorry it's so late for east coasters, but it's just too early for west coasters otherwise. Not sure the format yet, maybe google hangout, maybe group IM session, we'll see depends on number of people joining.

Any ideas, suggestions let us know!

Always down to help out BTF.

How about a BTF chat box?
bring it up again next week. We've had this come up a few times and rejected it for a few reasons:

1) It costs money to keep up a chat box, and that puts extra pressure on Saleem to keep things running
2) It's not moderated, which was the point of BTF in the beginning. This is less necessary now than it was in 2008-2009 (I think every member should spend a half hour and just go through old posts and laugh at how silly we were as a community)
3) Real-time chats are by definition temporal, so we lose the sense of continuity of conversation that the forum currently has. FB/Gchat has basically replaced the necessity of a real-time chat too

But again, these are all points from a year or so ago, the forum and members evolve, so if it makes sense now to bring in a chat feature we should definitely look into it. We also had vent for a while, which further negated the necessity but obviously that's gone too!

What would be gained from a chat that we can't achieve through posts, other than just casual conversation? Maybe we could setup video watching sessions or something where members pick a performance and comment/critique to help instruct newer members? People could ask questions faster, etc. Ideas like that will help us prioritize projects!

THAT would be sick. Getting newer captains/dancers access to live feedback in a structured way would be dope. You could also monitor how many of these sessions members do and incentivize them in a manner similar to Karma.

Seems a little bit of a stretch but cool idea fshooo.

^ this would actually be really cool! i read somewhr here that ppl dont critique/give other teams feedback on BTF openly coz they turn into 'cry baby rage monsters' hahahhahhahah. if experienced/knowledgeable dancers can participate in those live sessions & the judges on btf can join in as well, that'd be nice.

Let's bring BTF Ventrilo back to serve this purpose and other such community building projects. I'd throw down a little money to keep it running.

the problem with ventrilo is that there's no way to create easily searchable record of the discussion.

Imagine a TV show where Gordon Ramsay visits a bhangra team and spends a week with them trying to revive their modhey. Enter a few scenes of him being disgusted to find stains on vardii and screaming at captains for serving un-EQed mixes to the audience. Also, an underlying reason contributing to the team losing credibility, like a dysfunctional relationship between captains or all of the dancers not wanting to be there.

Call it Bhangra Team Hell. //S. Sylvester Productions.

Yesssss! Let's bring back the BTF Vent!! It's such a delight to speak with other people from the circuit. It's especially fun when there are events that we can view together (i.e. competition live streams).

We could even have a fundraiser to keep the BTF ventrillo alive or simply charge people to gain access. That way the burden is not all on one person to keep it running (hence why it died before).

By the way, I've done some quick research and this is by the far the cheapest place to rent a ventrillo server from: http://planetventrilo.com/ventrilo-servers.html

We could start off with a 25 slot server (pay the $52 - just need to get 10 people to pay $5 each), then expand when/if needed.

I'm all down for bringing vent back as long as we reduce the private channels. people got so cliquey before with the password protected groups.

Especially if members are paying into this now (instead of navkarn supporting it), I would loveit to be open and have people be social and let new guys meet peeps. that's how I really got to know half the circuit before meeting them at a comp...
