Thank you to all the competition organizers and committees that organized Buckeye Mela 9! Overall, our team had a wonderful experience and really had a great time. A very special thank you to our liasons, Adeeti, Richa, and Anisha
The night of the mixer was pretty well run. Our team waited for around half an hour to get a bus to the mixer location, but once we got there it ran pretty smoothly. This was definitely understandable, as they were transporting sixteen teams to a new location with a limited amount of buses. SB had an awesome time playing the mixer game and practicing afterwards was easy. There were lots of spaces available to practice, which was very convenient. With a significant amount of teams to fit through practice spaces, I'd really like to commend the Buckeye committee for finding us all convenient places to practice.
We had an early morning tech time the day of the competition, but they were running behind so our team was able to sleep a little once we got to the venue. That being said, we definitely understood the delay since many fusion teams had been at the venue since 5:30 to set up stage props. The stage crew at the performance arena was very helpful with regards to where to be and when to be there. Although the set-up for backstage was initially confusing, The Buckeye committee ensured that we always had someone leading us to get where we were needed. Stage lighting was easy and detailed, and the committee members in charge of lighting cues did a great job--in the future, we'd probably want the strobe lights to be in the side of the stage instead of the front because some of our dancers were a bit distracted by the strobe at times, but this wasn't a significant hindrance for us.
During our tech time, the Buckeye committee placed a running timer at the front of the stage. This was EXTREMELY helpful for us in budgeting our time--considering tech time is pretty limited at almost all competitions, this practice would definitely be appreciated if it was adopted throughout the circuit.
After our tech time on stage, we were given the opportunity to watch our tech time video on a projector with our whole team. To be able to see our formations and fix the little details before our performance went a long ways in assisting us in preparation for the stage/future practice. Following the video review, we were given the chance to practice for an hour and a half in a large room--please continue doing this, we (and I'm confident other teams) were so grateful for the extended practice time!
Afterwards, we were given our Subway and headed back the hotel via bus. The liaisons and exec board were on top of everything and always let us know when we needed to be at the venue and when we were scheduled to perform. It felt as if everyone on the committee was legitimately on the same page, and this coordination definitely reduced a lot of the strain on us when it came to tying paghs, chunnis, etc. Once we got the venue, it was pretty easy to find our way around and prepare the team to perform.
The show started a bit late, but ran smoothly once it started. The liaisons and committee helped the show run well, which is a huge feat with such a large number of teams. After we performed, we were able to watch the other teams dance. Packing up everything to go back to the hotel was a bit stressful, but the busses ran frequently which allowed our team to get to the hotel in a timely manner. The captains meeting was run on a first come-first served basis back at the hotel and the feedback we received was very useful--although it was a bit noisy since it was held on the same floor as the bar and restaurant. After we were transported back to the hotel, we got our pizza and had some time to prepare for the after-party. We had a great time at the after-party, and it wasn't too far away from the hotel which was very convenient.
Thanks to everyone who helped make our Buckeye Mela 9 experience a great one! We will definitely be applying again, and look forward to seeing you in Columbus next year
