Coke Studio: Pakistan

This is probably the most awesome music show to come out of South Asia since the OG SaReGaMa.

The concept is this: Rohail Hyatt (the dude from Paki band Vital Signs) gets musicians from different genres together and has them preform their pieces with each other in totally different compositions. They had one season last year that had some awesome collaborations with Rahat and Ali Azmat of Junoon. This year in the first episode they got toomba master Sain Zahoor and Pakistani rock band Noori to preform Bulleh Shah's kaafi 'Aik Alif'.

Then they had Atif Aslam, who I usually think is overrated do an amazing version of 'Jal Pari' where he mixes in Nusrat's Punjabi classic 'Piya Re'

Then they had the classically renowned lead singer of Mekaal Hassan Band, Javid Bashir do his take on another Nusrat Punjabi classic 'Aj Latho Naiyon Akhiyan Da Chaa'

Normally fusion music falls short but the work done on this show is amazing. I am glad that in Pakistan they have a real music show like this. In India there are stupid voting shows where singing meaningless Bollywood songs dominate. This is a great platform for musical artists to actually show their talent. There are going to be 3 more episodes this season and more great artists like JoSh and Ali Zafar will join in and show what creations they made. Just thought I would share this with all the music lovers here.

That would be an awesome idea but I think for the time being they are just gonna do the show and post he mp3s on their website and let people burn at will. I think that is pretty cool too, we don't have to pay on iTunes like other shows would make their watchers. They care more about music than money, that is refreshing.
