using rubber bands on the bottom of the salwar helps a lot. it doesn`t cut of circulation at all. i wouldn`t recommend safety pinning at all. i rmr one time my pin popped off and it was scraping my ankle the entire time.

for girls with short, layered hair, do french braids when doing your praandis with hairspray & bobby pins & def have 2 girls that know how to do this just because this takes foreeeever

what do you guys think about phumaans for the girls?
idk if you guys have seen LAPD girls with their recent controversial outfits. we have phumaans on our upper arms and the wrists, where as some girls on teams just tie them on the wrists. Some think it makes us look manly.

I agree on rubber bands. I have used them as well, and they are much better than pins.

Priya paneer banana, in regards to ur question. My opinion is that girls shouldn't use phumaans on their wrists because they have smaller hands and you can't see their intricate hand motions as where you can in guys. Its not exactly about manly, its more cuz girls have smaller hands. I would suggest just using it on the upper arm.

y dont the guys just use a do rag instead of a bandana? this way ur hair is out of the way...and unlike a bandana its not as thick so wudnt it make it easier to tie a pugg?

a question for the girls

make-up; do you have it the same? how "bright/standing out" is the eyeshadow? does everyone do their own or one person?
does it even make a difference if it is on or not?
ok no u cant c the makeup when ur sittin far away...but as i was readin through the rules of idols....they explain how they have cameras in i think 6 different locations.....meaning that they'll see ur face...and i would put makeup on like ur a clown literallyyyy...layer it on ...but i think that make up can definetly bring out the facial expressions more
ex. ever noticed a black person's smile-how its soo noticeable...well i hate going on stage lookin white and pale..so i use bronzer...also it kinda adds a shine to ur face-so now ur face glows when u smile during the dance; ok i kno that a few guys on btf dont like surma but seriously it looks nice-and brings out ur eyes...and at times watch the ppl on ur team-u can tell how hype, how much they love a song by their eyes--its weird to explain but at times ur eyes got this glow to em like ur face does...and puttin surma on helps to show that
-also think bout performance pictures...usually u'll see these pictures on next years show to help advertise how great the show was the previous year...and w/full blown makeup ur pictures turn out nice...also some1 said somethin bout keepin ur beard clean-that wud show up tooo on there

overall, if you're performing u shud definetly put all the hard work into looking good urself and makin ur dance look good....ur clothes show ur personality---the way u put ur outfit together before u go on stage represents ur whole team (and notice how ppl realize that ohh these teams chadra were terrible-and its a disgrace/ or the puggs or fallin off) u wanna show ur team has respect for the culture as well-so present urself like ur bout to hit the red carpet

Agree with you one hundred percent. Even if your performing for a non-competion, people DO notice what your face looks like and if its washed out in pics or videos. If it looks ridiculous in real life, it will look AMAZING on stage with all the lighting effects. It completes the look and makes you just FEEL ready to perform.

Also, if nailpolish ain't your thing, eyelash glue works really nicely in keeping tikkas in place during a performance :)

Hey sorry I don't if someone mentioned this but a few things:

1) As for the long salwars, one girl on our team has this problem. She's pretty short...bachari =) What she does is gather the length of the salwar from the waist and she uses two huge safety pins on either side to pin it. So she actually pins the waist area. It's been working for her thus far!

2) As for ankles, I think a few girls mentioned this already but we also pin the ankles with safety pins. Crucial to pin the safety pin the right way. If it were to ever pop open you would want the pin to be facing downwards and not upwards ready to stab your foot =) ... I think...I could just be making this up lol...

3) For Pirandis...my hair is super super long...but I still don't actually tie the pirandi...i find it places a lot of restrictions on me...instead we pin them to ourselves as if they were tied and put our hair in a bun...However if you feel cheap and un-majaajan lol...then you can tie the pirandi...go to fabric land or somewhere similiar and grab that black lace ribbon to wrap around your braid so it looks neat.

4) As for paghan...if you've never tried tying one without a banada...I highly suggest it. I used to always prefer bandanas but once I tried tying one without a bandana I found it WAY easier... The banada resists pressure and makes it difficult to tuck the turla in...at least thats what i find.

Question for you: Ladies...has anyone ever seen transparent bobby pins? I feel this would look so much better!
If you EVER find transparent bobby pins anywhere please message me...they would revolutionalize my life bhangra wise, and I won't have to get new bobby pins every time I change up my hair color. Thanks!

we had an attached front turla for the longest time but switched over a little while ago...any tips on how to shape the turla at the end after tucking it in? The tops of the starch always tend to bend downward/forward after I tick it in
tuck in the front - check
tuck in the corners of the turla - check
afthes 2 steps are done makke sure to go over the to of the turla and make a neat arch
the rest will usually fall into place
if it doesnt redo the turla or the entire pugg (pain in the ass)

tips for the chadre
practice with them on so when you tie them on properly you dont feel like taking a shit cuz their tight
when u practice do a lot of dhamaal and jugi/chaal these 2 steps bring out all the mistakes the person tying the chadre has made
when tying go jugi/chaal position if at the end the bottom of the charda isn a straight line (one side is going to be lower than the other) its not proper
when doing dhamaal the chadra should make 45 deg angle and doing jugi a straight line
if ur the person tying the chadre ask some vehley team members to help u out makes it easier also ty on your after your done everyone else's cuz it will get f****ed by the time ur done
iv had personal experince with these sort of problems arising and just wanted you ppl to know what not to do

everyone usually does their own makeup and we dont do "stage makeup" lol some teams do like to wear red/pink lipstick but we just stick to light lip gloss and bronzer/shimmer :)

could someone please describe how to tie a chunni if you don't have a vest? i found a video describing how to pin a chunni to a vest, but the girls on our team don't have vests, and we're trying to figure out how to make that "triangle" shape in the front of the chunni?

Hey - PM me if you are still looking for help with this. We can figure out the best way to communicate. Might be a bit confusing for you (or anyone else trying to learn) without conversation or a tutorial like ASD's video above

Okay so how do you tie the parandhi onto your kameez? Just with a safety pin? And also what are some good hairstyles to do with a parandhi?

Use Nail Glue to stick your Tikka in place!!

It dries transparent so you can't even tell its there! =)

Check all the costumes well before buying and if you donot know the exact way to wear the dress hire a professional to help you out rather than creating a scene out there.

For the tikka I use clear nail polish, or eye lash glue. Clear nail polish doesn't stay put for that long, so I would use eyelash glue. I know its weird, but it works!
Put a drop of glue on the back of the tikka, and wait about 10-15 seconds (till its tacky) and then put it on. Once you put it on, don't let go till about 30 seconds. And there you go :)
Hope this helped!

Would it be considered disrespectful if there was like a bracelet type of phuman worn during competitions? If there was a way to just clasp on phuman onto wrists and arms would that be considered cheating? I'm sure everyone knows how irritating it is to tie and untie phuman for competitions.

A bit of a strange post from a guy, but do any of you female dancers have a video of yourself pinning a chunni properly (without the vest)? It's so I can show it to any female dancers here as a reference/tutorial, especially if they don't know how to do it. Thanks :)
