so no one likes to dangle their phuman anymore huh ;) NICE. Smart move boys.

this is some new shit and I know live teams in india keep evolving just like us, so this set was as creative as i would expect it to be but fell short in some surprising categories!!! (energy and synchronization)

...energy in fulka? come on ! lowness in jugni, not really striking me as good as indian teams usually are, esp. legendary dav jalandhar. this performance struck me as half-assed in lot of parts. of course they killed prop segments and some new creative moves (like that rowing jugni move at 7:20 shabaaashhh). mirza was cool too. but then sammi at 10:04 is the most lackadaisical sammi ever, 10:50 onwards (ending punjabs) - the legs hardly leave the floor!

just not as disciplined/consistently energetic as i've come to expect from indian teams and the 1st place winners of these zonals especially...hmm...

Arjun, indian teams usually focus on execution and the upper body over the legs. The need to squat for moves is something of our own invention. The best video to watch for this is the bhangra practice video of khalsa college. The needing to squat to make it more folk is an advent of teams. Usually cleaner sets and less risky sets have more effect on the moves as the "simple" folk choreo is helped by greater effect with the moves. This is a more risky and new set, where the steps need to be properly executed rather than enhanced by effectual squatting and such.

Hmm Saab Im not sure I can agree with you on this one - sure in India shoulders/upper body and arms are always important (where is it not eh?) but the legs too...in boliyaan there's always mentioning of "jor pattaan da" and all that which means strong thighs I believe, which is supported by high legs/getting low in all the lyallpur khalsa college vids i've seen (see their mh1 coca cola semifinal video or any of theirs...I would point out the other coca cola vids too but they seem to have been taken down...or see shivchand!! haha my faves) I've generally seen both upper and lower body energy from indian teams.

I tried quickly looking for that khalsa college practice vid, I have seen it before but not remembering the legs...gaahh theres so many khalsa college videos too like lyallpur KC, KC Amritsar etc..

Plus even for DAV Jalandhar in that classic video with Chuch Mahi in all white they really killed it man, got HELLA low for jugni and everything, they lifted their legs more there and everything too. Thats why this really struck me as first time I'm seeing a firstplace Indian video with not-so-enthusiastic legs and even arms/shoulders at times

Bro, from what I saw of this video, it just reinforces my point. For the mirza and the bedi, a couple of the jodis are not lifting there legs but focusing on the execution of the steps. The jugni step that they use requires that they get low, from a low to high motion, and then they move at half-speed, not on beat counts but on every two beats, requiring that they get lower to overcome the motion of the steps. Also, at 8:50 the switches are lackadaisacal.

Theres a difference between the expectation of going low for an entire set, and going low when you are supposed to, as in betkas, or as in jugni steps or jumps that require you to do so. Some of there betkas were off, and the second video seems to have more going low in exchange for a much cleaner, less risky set. They also arent picking legs up with their chaffa...etc. I think more of the "jor pataan da" focuses on the stamina of the dancers and their execution of the steps they pick for their set rather than carrying out a certain set of expectations for each set. The new dav set is vastly different from this one, and they need to make certain things stand out.

yeahhh hey that's true, well put. I've never seen high legs in bedi anyway, its just a chill move meant for the upper body but yeah i guess they are "purposely" "slackin off" for mirza haha (in quotes because that's my imposition/expectation on/of them). At least give us some high pumping legs for ending Punjab's though!!! EVERYONE does that cmon dont make me post the lyallpur mh1 vid haha the embedded youtube frame takes up so much space ;) but at the end of the day I guess they can prioritize what they want to, but it didn't always used to be this way, just take lyallpur or good ol' PAU as an example something about their sets (maybe not legs maybe they just put more power into their upper bodies) just makes them seem more fierce/digging into moves like fulka more etc...actually bending ones back for sammi and so on.
