Hey BTF-ers,
So last night was the annual DC Metro Punjabi Arts Academy Summer Competition. It was an amazing showcase of the up and coming talent in the DC/MD/VA area and it was a great show from top to bottom.
S/O to Nana, Tina, Gurpreet and the rest of the crew for doing an amazing job organizing this--- accommodating 16 teams which is an incredible accomplishment. Show started on time (lil before 6:30), and the hall was packed and it was LOUD. The Emcees for the night ---- Chugglian did a great job with interacting with both the audience and dancers after their respective performances.
(Mixer-friday)
Mixer was really fun -- there was plenty of food which consisted of naan, rice, butter chicken, mutter paneer, naan and boondi raita and there was cake for dessert. games included dcmpaa trivia, (my personal favorite) each team had to choreo a 30 sec live set where nana brought out his dhol and allowed one person from each team to play while someone else on the teams sang a boli or a drake verse, and a pagh tying contest which I miserably failed haha. The team who finished with the higher amount of points got to choose which order they wanted to be in the show.
(Comp day-saturday)
We had enough space to practice before tech time which ran pretty smoothly in my opinion, food wise and there was plenty of water and subway sandwiches and cookies and chips to have! GTV was in the house to take pics and vids which added a lil more flavor to the experience--Thanks Harjot
--Harjot came in late on Friday just to cover the event for one whole day and then had to head out back to cali on Sunday morning! When my team performed, oh man wow the crowd was really loud which def helped me a lot towards the end when I thought that I didn't have the energy to execute my remaining baitkas with a smile! I now understand when dancers say the routine goes by really fast once you step onto the stage. The feeling afterwards after our performance was over--magical. Overall my team placed 3rd which was awesome! The show ended well before 10 PM which was really impressive and afterwards the committee was nice enough to give out pizzas exclusively for the dancers after the show was done right at the venue. I have not seen that happen at other comps that I have been to which is CLUTCH! Also the judging panel was awesome at breaking down what I needed to work on for the future!
Afterparty
There was an after party thrown last minute. Unfortunately I did not go but I heard that it was fun!
I have done many competitions playing dhol but this was the first time that I have ever danced on stage doing a full routine and if there was any comp that I was going to go through the grind---it was this one. The committee was great, standard was great just like the previous years maybe even better given that this year accommodated 16 teams and each respective captain who have been affiliated with the academy, were really chill and always were willing to lend a hand in breaking down some difficult steps which I thought were hard to execute. Anyone else who hasn't done this before or has never danced period, I strongly encourage you to give this a try next year. The results and feeling are overall rewarding!
Great night in the North American Bhangra Circuit!
