Hahaha I looked up a lot of the stuff because this intrigued me as to why they though this. So first off one of the reason's that I found for this "doom's day" has been that the plane of the earth will meet in-line with that of the sun.

Too clarify, the Earth rotates on an axis around the sun. What they are trying to say is that the axis of earth will be directly in-line with the sun's BUT the flaw in that is that already has happened. Heck it happens every year. Something called the Summer and Winter Solstice. Our axis is directly in the path of the sun therefore we receive an abundent amount of sunlight on that date and an abundent amount of darkness on the other.
Another reason was, that date signifies the end of the Mayan calender (Maya is an ancient civilation that was very skilled and intelectually accelled in their era, whose noted work are studied today). The problem with this is that the Mayan's had calculated that the Earth would reach to this point on exact rotation after a certain amount of years(millenia's) also known as the (galactic equator) but the problem with this is scientist's see no real evidence of any astronomical effects even if it were to be "dead on". Also many say that this is where the Mayan's calender ends period because they had no number after this, which is untrue since a race like the Mayan's never really reached there peak and the number they had on there calender was just of the end of the cycle and "may" not be the end of the Earth since they do have numbers to count with after the noted date/number.
Many people are quoting NASA to have agreed with a strange Solar Flare effect that may occur but I had come accross an article nearly a year ago written by NASA that abolished such beliefs but I can't seem to find it.
Again I didn't do much rigorous research into this since I believed it didn't need much of my time.
Also note if the world were to end and much factual evidence was out there to prove the occurence, I think we would band together to figure out a solution and we would all be aware that it is a serious threat.
