I would recommend any of Canon's starter DSLR's... The Canon vs. Nikon debate is almost dead even now... However, Canon has always had 1 distinct advantage over Nikon, and that is pure speed... You can get breathtaking shots on a Canon that would otherwise not turn out the same on a Nikon... This is not to say Nikon is a bad brand, at the end of the day it falls down on what the end user is comfortable with. I have been using Canon all my life, so I am very used to and comfortable with their menu layout and physical layout... Nikon's are known for their over the top menu's that take a little getting used to... You should also note that at almost every sporting event that takes place, all the photographers on the sidelines are using Canon equipment. You can tell by looking at their lenses, they're all white Canon L series lenses...

Another thing to think about is "where do I want to go with this in the future" ... Meaning, what equipment should you invest in now? I started off with a Canon Rebel XT, which has a cropped sensor. I purchased a load of Canon EF-S lenses, that won't work with their "full frame sensor" camera's... I recently got my hands on the monster 5D Mark II and the camera being a full frame sensor, will not accept the ef-s lenses... Check out the link below for a more detailed description to decide what sensor is right for you...

Go with Nikon. Nikon has the edge with its D3000, which is the newest version of the D60. It boasts a 12 point focus system, a bigger LCD screen than Canon, and a built in guide for taking great pictures, all of which the Canon Rebel in the same class does not have...go with Nikon, better cameras in my opnion...i have the d3000 and am very very satisfied...

The d3000 was released after the Xsi. Therefore, it's contender is the Canon Tsi

Nikon d3000
10.2 megapixels
3 Frames per second
3" LCD Monitor 230,000 dots of resolution
Viewfinder range coverage 95%

Canon T1i
15.50
3.4 Frames per second
3" LCD Monitor 920,000 dots of resolution
Viewfinder range coverage 100%

This is reason enough for me to choose Canon between these 2 particular models.

lenses are also really important to look into. Many stores just give the price off the body and maybe the shitty stock lens it comes with.

I have the D3000 as well, got it with the Costco pack, which I would recommend for noobs because they give you both a medium wide angle lens and a closeup lens (amazing zoom).

Harjot, hows that 5D? i hear it shoots amazing HD video

The 5dmk2 is one clever little machine, it records insane HD video... However, the video quality is not due to the camera, but rather the lens... Most consumer/prosumer HD camera's don't have the flexibility in lenses as a SLR does... For this reason alone, you can get some crazy shots if you use good glass (depth of field is crazy) The Canon T1i will give you incredible HD results as well, provided it's paired with good glass...
