Welcome to the medical industry ... most medicines don't do shit but facilitate industry ... for all you desis going to med school , no offense to you and the hard work you guys do , but I have people in my family that are doctors ... and they openly admit that doctors don't really do much, they just perform tests, prescribe drugs, and then rack up the money. To people ... unless your arm get severed off by some freak accident, eat your fruits and vegetables and you won't really need drugs and doctors.
Or if you have a disease. Or if you catch some illness. Or if you disabled physically or mentally. Or if you have psychological issues. Or if you're genetically predisposed to conditions only treatable by medicine. I don't care what your family members said but thats such a one-sided statement.
i AM in medical school, and I'm not taking offense but i disagree with your point Let me say that I visit the doctor MAXIMUM once a year, so yes you ARE correct in saying that if you eat fruits and vegetables and maintain a healthy life style, you dont need the doctor on a regular basis. You cut out an enourmous number of medical problems by going to bhangra practice every day and getting your cardio in, and then having a smoothie or a protein shake after! And yes, a large part of that aspect of medicine is all industry, whcih is why PREVENTATIVE medicine is such an adamant focus of medicine these days. Educate people and they won't even need us.
But what about people who get cancer? Are we just ordering a bunch of tests and drugs for them to rack up money? How about the people that have caught H1N1... hm... fruits and veggies didn't do so much for them either. What about people with muscular dystrophy, sickle cell anemia, dwarfism or other genetic conditions? How does this girl, who got a FLU shot, serve as an example of the medical business as an industry? My hospital gives flu shots away for free!
I don't know what kind of medicine your family members practice, but I'm sure that you took what they said WAY out of context. the majority of people that walk into a doctors office could probably imrpove their lives TREMENDOUSLY by drinking less, smoking less, exercising, and eating right. But that does not make medicine an industry hell bent on making money.
As for this girl and her situation, I think this is unbelievably sad and also tremendously interesting. Yes there is no scientific evidence to support this situation, making it seem unlikely, but that's the beauty of science. The rules change EVERY SINGLE DAY, and if you rule out every anomaly as impossible, unlikely, or FAKE, there will never be progression.
