Masala does few things to your dhol. First the ghee acts as a Moisturizer for the dhol, preventing it from cracking and drying the wood up. the cloves and nutmeg sticks to the wood, especially on the inside since thats where it is most concentrated when applied. cloves/nutmeg enhance the acoustics of the drum, giving it a more open sound. to put it to the test, if you have a dry dhol with no masala added to it then take it apart. then take another dhol which as a dhol with masala and then put the two side by side. stick your hand in both of them and snap your finger. you will notice that the one with masala will give you an echo and the one with no masala will be dull. when snapping the finger the sound will travel on the inside the dhol with masala more compared to a dry dhol. the masala does dry off and will start coming off over time. depending on how much you play you should apply masala atleast every other year. i apply masala to all my dhols atleast once or twice a year depending how much i play. hope this helps.
