Dhol set question

This is a question for all those people out there that perform dhol slots at parties they go to. This could help people new to this such as myself.


My question is, do you just give the track names/cd/songs to the dj and start playing alongside it? or do you rehearse with dj or something or do any preparations before hand?

I would play alongside on everything - other than to take a short break.

I mean i would have the top songs worked up myself and then use the opportunity to improvise those i hadnt played with before if that makes sense.

I see. Cause there was this dhol player at a party either he was really good and played to a LOT of songs as a very high standard or he just practiced those songs and gave them a rough idea on what songs to play and stuff so I thought he had a rehearsal before hand or something

I just play along with whatever the DJ plays. I think most Dholis have a song or 2 that they just know how to handle. It always good to practice on songs that you know are going to be played at parties. Just to spice it up a little

i don't play dhol, but one thing i suggest that wouldn't hurt is familiarizing yourself with the top 40 wedding songs. mundyian to bach ke, panga, aaj din khushian da; etc. etc.

yea those dholis are usually hardcore music fans and just listen to the songs on a regular basis

or if you can understand how music is made and how a song is constructed you start picking up on patterns and you easily figure out where a thora should go or when you should start changing the bols etc. most songs follow a similar layout

yup once you become familiar with the timings of the songs since most songs are a 4 count, you can figure out by the timing when to do a break, roll or thora, or tihai. once you got the timing figured out its smooth sailing, unless the stupid ass dj made his own remix and fucked up the timing ( dj ksr...if have ever played dhol to some of his remixes at a party then you know the pain. ) then its a pain in the ass. but try to familiarize yourself with the timing.

Ima listen to shitloads of songs for about a month or 2 now. I guess the dholi I saw must have been some proper badass pro cause he played along side the reggae track rumours with tera yaar bolda mixing in to it for the transition. He was playing some mad fast beats alongside the rumours and while the transition he was sound bending and everything. It was amazing.


Also the dj seemed to have put the volume of the song down completely for the dholi to do some thora's or roll's from time to time. Was that also a coincidence? cause it sounded like he knew where the dholi was going to do a roll or thora. Or does it go back to that structuring of a song thing where there's 4 beats and the dj knows when to do that and what not?

Sounds like to me they either practiced together or have been DJing/playing Dhol at many events together. If there is a lot of coordination like that, it's most likely they've done gigs together before.

Put up a video of the dhol player if you have it! Would be interesting to check out.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but how would you guys rate Mitch Hyare as a dholi? I ask that because i've seen him live and found him pretty darn good.

Razonhedge, in my opinion, I think Mitch was one of the top Dholis few years ago along side Raju Dholi from Fremont, CA. "Dholism", has become more advanced and I have seen Dholis that can do some crazy stuff that can surpass Mitch.


P.S Dholisim is just a word I made up that describes the world of Dholis lol.

Most dholis, in the tristate, are just familiar with the songs that are played in/at weddings. As you perform at more and more weddings you will pick up the music easier, and if u perform with the same dj often, you will learn his style and at a certain point you will actually be able to guess what song is coming up next as well. You just need to learn how to adapt to any genre of music no matter what

I think as far as the DJ dropping the track so that the dhol is the focus that's just something he did on the 4th beat of a measure. Something he did throughout the video. Got to admit the video was pretty sick.


What I would do is focus on the main songs and handle the tirkits and rolls according to each song. The more you work with a DJ obviously the more you will be familiar with their style. As far as most songs you can get a pretty good feel for the song given the 4/4 beat that most songs take.

another thing you can notice from the video is that the dholi is super aware of the dhol beat used in the original song and selects his own beats to like layer on top of it. it makes his playing sound wayyyy more advanced than it actually is.
