I mean there are stores like House of Depali and Butala Emporium but if you're looking for something good, then you might as well save your time and money getting one from India. A friend of mine bought a dhol from House of Depali on Hillside Avenue and 200 something street. He ended up paying about $500+Shipping for a dhol that's somewhat alright. Try looking around for a good shell in the area and fit a dagga and tilli side yourself.

House of Depali's dhol's are actually around $500. I live across the street lol. Its located on Hillside Ave and 250/249th street.

I agree with Jaskaran, just get it from India.
House of Deepali seems really expensive...try going to Butala in Jackson Heights. I think they sell it for $300...not sure

I think it's in front of Patel Brothers.

Butala Emporium in Jackson Heights is indeed across the street from Patel Bros. The musical instruments are downstairs. They've had dhols there for the last few years, but they're pretty much bottom-quality bina drums. If you treat the shell, re-rope, and put on new heads, you can make one to sound decent, but chances are it's never going to be an amazing instrument.

Mail-order-wise, dhol etc seems to have good quality drums, as does kala kendar.

how bout some shops in toronto, ontario?
I'm not from Toronto, but I've visted a few times. You can check out Kala Kendar on Gerrard Steet for some high quality dhols (amongst other instruments). They may be a bit pricey, but from what I know, it's worth it.

Here is their address and other information: http://www.kalakendar.com/pages/Contact-Us.html

Others from the area might be able to inform you about other shops. Hope that helps.

any suggestions to a nice cheap one?
its guna b my first time buying one
Okay I'm not a dholi either :p but...

I have a friend who owns this one: http://www.kalakendar.com/products/Bhangra-Dhol.html

It's a great quality dhol for beginners. It's a bit heavy, but it has solid construction and has deep dagga sound. If you're still learning and want to improve your skills, I feel that's a great dhol to use, especially for the price. The only thing that I noticed is that they're out of stock on it until March, but maybe you could pre-order one? If you plan to visit after March, you could call them up and ask if they will have any in stock for you try out.

Anyway, my suggestion is to actually go to the shop and try them out yourself.. then you can hear which dhol sounds the best (to you), what the quality of the dhol is, how it feels on your shoulders, etc. If you plan to visit Toronto anyway, just make sure to spend some extra time at the shop to figure all of this out. Hope that helps.

Oh, you're quite far from Toronto man. I wouldn't drive out there unless you know people there (friends, friends, etc) because a 4-6 hour commute one way + the time it's gonna take you test out the different dhols = you definitely need a place to crash at night ;) If you have to pay for a hotel/motel, it's not even worth the trip!

I've danced & helped establish a few teams down in Texas. Currently don't dance for one due to work consuming my life. lol. Also, I no longer live close to any of the teams in the area :(

Best of luck,

Basim :)
