Dhol Wood Help

I have a dhol that my Dadaji bought from India about 6ish years ago. I play the dhol by hobby now and I don't know what wood it is made of. It got cracked during the transportation to Canada. Can anybody tell me what wood this dhol is made of?


Btw. The brown part inside the barrel has the same feeling as a sand paper and the yellow thing is just carpenters glue that my dad used to fill the cracks 5 years back.

I'm not so sure ??? maybe it's mango(amb) wood

Yeah I think that's Amb wood too but I'm still not 100% sure. I thought maybe if I get the opinions of the BTF community, i'll know forsure. At first I thought it was some other wood (kachi Pakki) but I wasn't 100% sure.

Thats most certainly amb, any other kind of wood has a much darker look. Also the brown stuff is masala that is used to seal up cracks or dents, they use it its kind of like Bondo for dhols lol.

Ok. I knew that the brown stuff was paste because I read almost all of the topics with anything dhol-related before posting this topic. I just wasn't able to figure out which wood my dhol was made of. Thanks alot guys.

Another question: Where in India is the best place to buy a dhol? I might be going this December to India. I asked my dad and he just wants me to buy a dhol from a shop and not from an ustaad (I don't know why).

If you sanded the paint off of your drum you woulda been able to tell what kind it was. If you're not looking for an ustaad dhol then you can go to any corner of any city in punjab and you will find a dhol shop. The deeper you go into punjab the more shops you will find. And he prolly doesn't want you paying a decent amount extra just because an ustaad built it, where you can find a drum thats almost the exact same at a shop for a few bucks less

Yeah I was thinking about sanding it but since it was cracked on the outside, I didn't want to because I knew that it would have cracked more. Yeah. He was saying the same thing.

Thats true but if the crack doesn't run the entire way down then you'll be fine as long as you get clear wood filler and just use it to hold it together. But thank you, appreciate it haha, glad you liked em
