I'm guessing it covered the Puravas (Porus, by Greek name). Definitely a badass, but unfortunately, he doesn't touch the ballerness of the Rajput greats Rana Pratap Singh and Queen Padmini.

Yeah that's what it was about. Not to mention they don't spend enough time talking about how Alexander The Great was never able to establish himself as an invader and conqueror in India.

Well.... he could have, but he stretched too far out. He did end up defeating Puravas and as far as I know, did set up a Greek camp with him. Puravas was allowed to continue to rule under Alexander's absolute rule. I believe the famous scene when something like:

Alexander: How would you like to be treating?
Puravas: Like a king.

In the end, Puravas, was Alex's bitch. And didn't he marry some Greek chick too? We really can't pride ourselves, as Indians, for stopping Alexander the Great's conquest of the known world. The huge factor was that he went too far not because he met a foe he couldnt stop because he didnt.

Yeah for sure.
He did lose and essentially did become Alex's bitch.

Thats why I don't understand why some Desi family's name their children after Alexander the Great OR claim to be a descendant of Alexander the Great. Why would you want to claim the lineage of a people that actually tried to kill you?

Anyways yeah he did spread himself thin, not enough people take that into account.

The Kingdoms in India had two things going for them.

1)An unusually large army
2)An exhausted opposition

In the documentary they mentioned Elephants to be a big advantage for Porus.

Keep in mind that Alexander the Great TOOK IN Horse riding archers from the Central Asian steppes and also other people he had already previously defeated. The battle of hydaspes was merely ONE Kingdom fighting One Kingdom+Several allies.

Alexander had some pretty interesting times in India. He went to Nysa which is technically somwhere in Afghanistan but whatever. Tradition holds that it is the place the god Dionysis was born. He is the god of wine and fun stuff, whom Alexander said he was brother of, by way of being Zeus' son. He broke a pact with the hill tribe cheiftans of Gandhara and surrounding lands and massacred them. He got Ambi, the leader of Taxila to be his ally against Porus.

It was a really hard fought battle from what I remember reading, muddy and during monsoon season. Porus and his generals made some tactical errors and Alexander took advantage and eventually pulled off a victory. After the battle Alexander gave Porus all his land back and then some and made him into a satrap (governor) after Battle of Hydapses (Jhelum). Alexander's men pretty much nearly mutinied and killed him after they reached Hyphasis (Beas) because they thought they were going to reach ocean by then and now Alexander wanted to go now even further into India and challenge the Nanda and Gangarida who had even more war elephants and better armies.

On his way back Alexander conquered Multan and defeated the Malli(Malhi) tribe. He actually almost died here because an arrow hit him in the chest but his surgeon found a way to save him.

So Alexander left Punjab and left satraps behind to report to him. Eventually those satraps would leave and the land was conquered by Chandramaurya Gupta. On the way back he left through the Gedrosian Desert. Bad idea, lost almost all of his soldiers in the heat and sandstorm conditions.

Alexander was awesome. Porus did what he had to do to survive, I can't fault him for that. When people in power are about to be taken out of it they will always swallow some pride and make alliances to survive. Rajputs did it, Marathas did it, Sikh kingdoms did it, everyone does it.

Wow this is really facinating stuff. I knew about Alexander coming to India and his greed for more power but not to the extend of what the history channel showed.
