question is.. why can't this actually happen? why does it have to be a dream?

why don't we pick a handful of the most entertaining teams (by vote) get em in one conversation, figure a time and location that's good for everybody and have them compete?

organizers would die for something like this and the proceeds could go towards a proper after party hehe make it a festival or whatever.

Doesn't seem like anyone's ready to take an initiative, and if they do it usually end up being bs. WBBC has a phenomenal line-up, but they couldn't live up to what they promised either...no rivals...and didn't provide any matchups that "the people wanted". There was a huge thread where roughly everyone had the same opinion on what the lineup/matchups should be. No doubt the committee saw this...and I'm guessing they tried to make the matchups happen, but at the end of the day they didn't. Who knows..maybe some of the teams themselves denied invitation. Still it's pretty self evident that we will never have a "dream team lineup".

In order for this to happen. Teams need to step up and not make excuses. Elite 8 and WBBC - great ideas but if the teams don't follow through, the comp can't do anything.

I would personally love for all the teams that think they are the "BEST" team in the circut to step up and say I am competing here and anyone who thinks they are hot shit, face us.

All the teams that have been called on this thread can throw out dates, or pick a comp. I am sure as a group we can work with any comp and say we want these teams to compete, can you auto accept

I think I know which "era" of bhangra you're speaking of, but I'd have to respectfully disagree with you to an extent. I think "back in the day", bhangra was still exploring which boundaries could be pushed and what judges/people wanted...which is why we saw such unique routines. I don't think it was necessarily to to out-compete anyone. Rather, I think the bhangra circuit has become way too UN-friendly these days. I think much of it comes from bitterness of placings and misjudgment, which leads to too many arguments between teams rather than constructive criticisms and simply "hoping for the best" the next time around. However, I do agree that rubrics are holding "teams by their balls". I wanna see more teams who could give an eff about the rubric and just dance for the purpose of spreading culture, making the audience happy, and making themselves happy.

To some extent I agree with both of you. The focus is now around placings (and by placings I mean first... because apparently "tied for first" and below don't count). And not that it shouldn't be, but few teams care to push boundaries and explore new territory. Where as bhangra in it's learning and even exploratory stage was about enjoying yourself on stage, trying to wow a crowd, and going the distance. There are too many reasons for why this happened, and how groundbreaking performances are now once in a blue. I look forward to seeing new teams who-win or lose-forget the formula and showcase a performance on stage that reminds us all that bhangra is an art form. And all art forms will be in their exploratory stage.

completely agree with this point, that same competitiveness just isn't there anymore and without that there will be no phenomenal performances, yes you can be friendly and teams should but that doesn't mean you dont be competitive. It should be a mixture of both.

I really appreciate this post and it's true to a very large extent, but I think the money aspect is one of the biggest motivations for this mindset of placing a heavy emphasis on the judging rubric and requirements rather than on the factors you've listed. Most teams that are competing now (I can't necessarily say its true for all teams out there) are under heavy financial constraints when it comes to managing their team, i.e. traveling, costumes, props, mixes and gimmicks even. So, when the competition opportunity does arise, I think although most people are into Bhangra for the joy of it, they unfortunately have to make these judging issues a higher priority to ensure that they can be compensated and still be able to compete. So, this cycle can't really be broken. This is especially true for teams that are just entering or reviving themselves into the competitive circuit, as captains have to make some really tough and sometimes unpleasant decisions about deciding between simply following their ideas and concepts and seeing how far they can take them and seriously going back to the basics and working on cleaning/standardizing to the max. It's nearly impossible to do both and get anywhere haha


The only thing thats slightly upsetting is the fact that culture/audience/self-satisfaction elements can't be more integrated into judging and the rubrics. Much easier said than done, but hopefully some day we'll get the best of both worlds
