e- WORLD BHANGRA CHAMPIONSHIP !!

WORLD BHANGRA JUDGE !!

Hi All !

I fully understand that it is too much expensive/time consuming for the Bhangra teams of North America to compete for the 'World's Bhangra Championship' here in Punjab/Chandigarh and on the other hand, the unability of the Indian/Punjab teams to participate in North America..due to security reasons.

I have a unique idea..if we start e-World Bhangra Championship like the participating teams from India/Punjab and abroad will upload their performances on U-TUBE (without any cut) and few judges from the North America / Punjab will judge online and declare the World's Best Bhangra Teams. Their would be a nominal fee like $999 from the participating teams in N/America and $333 from the teams of Punjab as they can not afford too much. The total fee collection after deducting some administrative expenses, would be distributed amongst the WORLD's BEST BHANGRA TEAMS as under:

1. WORLD'S BEST BHANGRA TEAMS (OVERALL)
2. WORLD'S BEST BHANGRA TEAM (RUNNER UP)
3. WORLD'S BEST BHANGRA TEAM (2ND RUNNER UP)
4. WORLD'S BEST CHOREOGRAPHED TEAM
5. WORLD'S BEST DRESSED TEAM
6. WORLD'S BEST DHOLI (FROM THE TEAMS)
7. WORLD'S BEST SINGER (FROM THE TEAMS)
8. WORLD'S BEST INSTRUMENTALIST (FROM THE TEAMS)

All of you on the BTF are requested to send us your consent/queries within 10 days enabling us to start the process at the earliest, please.

BEST WISHES !!

Avtar Chana,
Chandigarh.

It's a good idea no doubt, but has plenty of flaws.

1) Youtube is really really bad video quality website. Some performances even look off-beat because the music doesn't adjust well when it's uploaded. You would need significantly higher quality videos and nothing beats "real-life" resolution. (unless this is Futurama)

2) $999/$333 is way too much. Cut that down 90% and even then, it may not even be worth it. American/Canadian teams are not rich. $1000 is essentially a 1st place prize. Too much risk.

3) It seems way too much like a scam. You don't meet judges personally and you don't see them. How would teams know whether a fair process took place. Rubrics need to be posted and criteria needs to be agreed on. Placings awards need to be set at a standard and there would need to be less than 5% profit. (Judges do no work. No travel. Just sit and watch bhangra videos. Heck we all do that every single hour)

There would need to be legal contracts. But wait, there are judges in India and then you are also in India, so I'm not sure how international legislation would apply. I'm really happy to see people from India on BTF (especially people with so much experience in bhangra like you Avtar), but here we see scam/phishing emails in our inboxes everyday. A lot of us have become very wary and cautious.

4) Part of investing in a bhangra competition is going to the competition, performing and meeting other teams. You take that away from the experience and you need to take it out of the amount of money teams will pay.

Essentially you're asking teams to give up a first place prize money, taking away the thrill of performing, travelling, team-bonding, meeting other teams, being appreciated by live audience members, going to afterparties and having a memorable experience so that judges from India/US with different perspectives/views on Bhangra can "watch" poor quality videos of the teams, some unknown judging "process" takes place, some teams win and you give them the title of "Best Bhangra Team in the World", a title that wouldn't really mean much. Also, they get some money back. Good idea, too many flaws.

Dear Kinnell,
Thank you very much for the inputs.
1. If U-Tube is not well due to its bad video quality we can get DVDs.
2. Regarding fee, we can make it less..no problem..
3. Everything is online..you can discuss the things with the judges on messenger or even can call..we will provide you their information..
4. We will involve online media from North America and India enabling you to discuss the things live..

If you have more questions, please fee free to ask.

Thanks again !

I think it would be cool if a set number of teams are chosen through a selection process from the US, CANADA, INDIA, AUSTRALIA, etc and the chosen teams in those regions (countries) have a bhangra competition in their own countries. Then whoever wins the regional (or country) competition will go on to compete at the World level. So for example if you have Canada's top teams in a competition. Whatever team(s) win there will go and compete at the world level. It would be the same for every country that has majorly competitive bhangra teams. This way you aren't sacrificing the competition experience, but it will have more of a tournament feel to it. The final championship can be streamed over the internet. Just some thoughts off the top of my head.

If teams had to post thier sets online, wouldnt they have the opportunity to perform their set as many times as they like to feel satisfied?? i think that takes away from the whole thirll of performing live, because you know if you mess up you can just record it agian

Thank you very much for your replies.

Meistro, I fully agree with your suggestions like to have the Best teams, Zone wise.. GREAT !!

We have noted your first gud proposal and let us please seek more suggestions from the Bhangra teams, world-wide.

Our goal is to have one 'Bhangra Platform' for the entire world, where every one can come, compete, discuss, entertain and above all - ENJOY !!

...and dear Manjot, I hope your query also clears with the proposal of Mr. Meistro.

please don't discourage teams like that. Bhangra in north america has come a long way and I do personally do believe that the best teams here can run with teams in punjab. I believe that.

But what standard do we rate teams? The indian teams I have seen are more or less strictly traditional and not much emphasis on formations. There are a lot of great American/Canadian teams that are traditional, but throw in a "gimmick" here and there or are formation heavy.

I think that all teams would need to be notified that formations would be taken into account maybe even stunts. I'm sure some Indian teams will think that wouldn't be bhangra or traditional. But if they are not taken into account, that puts NA teams (North American) at a disadvantage for doing them.

My dear friends,

I appreciate the proposal of dear Saleem. I have watched many teams in North America and in India /Punjab / Chandigarh. AND I am sure that teams of N/America are very competitive/energetic these days and will surely get max. marks.

Audience here is too crazy to watch your bhangra and that's why I am insisting to have a 'Common Platform.'

BEST WISHES !!
