this really sucks. still some good teams, but the initial lineups they had was ridiculous. its a shame to see so many drops.

ooooook. no SGPD, no NJ, no Empire, no PCBCA -- elite 8 missing some regulars this year. unfortunate. it's time for a new team to step up

The correct way to view this years Elite 8 (and what I thought it should have been all along):

Elite 8 2012- Champions and Challengers

Champs- AEG, APD, NYPD, (missing sgpd, nj, pcbca)
Challengers- Knightz, SMD, JJ, UNC

It's still a very good lineup if Knightz can finally pull off a clean performance. SMD is coming with a new style and a new team. JJ has been practicing for a YEAR for this shot, and UNC is peaking at the right time.

The thing people forget is that we've only had one/two performances each year at elite that are memorably epic (start to finish strong), NJ2010 and SGPD2011 come to mind. This lineup is still capable of producing that epic performance that changes the rest of the season. Everyone will be good, these teams are active and motivated, but we only need one or two to really go next level and elite will be on par with past years in terms of dancing, just not the hype.

Don't forget guys that Elite 8 does not have control over which teams will show up to compete. They only give out bids. And while EMDO could be giving higher incentives for teams to stay in the line-up, we need to consider that we are just as dependent on the teams for showing up and maintaining the hype/their status as "one of the best".

As every team who has ever competed knows, there are always unexpected obstacles as competitions near. Dancer gets injured, gimmick gets used, dancer gets pulled over by a cop in a car filled with balloons that reek of marijuana an hour before team takes the stage, transportation gets too expensive, judges just hate your swag..etc. The teams that we've come to know to win competitions are those who tend to be able to handle this last minute stress - dancers are experienced enough to switch formations last minute to go 15 man, new dancers are available, team is able to think of new choreo when old gets used the weekend before, dancer is able to convince cop that he is only borrowing his friend's car and that he doesn't even smoke hookah...etc

There is a certain prestige that comes with competing at Elite 8, but I truly hope that all these teams this year that dropped out of the line-up (NJ, PCBCA, SGPD) and the teams that declined (ABC, Empire) have really legitimate reasons for not competing other than "We're only 99% ready", "We don't want to lose", "We didn't plan ahead enough, everything is too expensive now". There's a reason why Elite 8 only has one trophy - the night is more about recognition than competition, it's more about giving the circuit dance performances that they will talk about for the rest of the year. But it's completely on the teams to actually make good on their names and their "elite" status and come through.

What's your definition of champion and your definition of challenger?

If I were to say, teams that have recently won a competition, then it would be:
Champions: AEG, JJ, UNC
Challengers: APD, NYPD, Knightz, SMD

If I were to say, teams that have competed at Elite 8 before, then it would be:
Champions: AEG, APD
Challengers: NYPD, JJ, UNC, Knightz, SMD

If I were to say, teams with 3 lettered acronyms, then it would be:
Champions: AEG, APD, UNC, SMD
Challengers: NYPD, JJ, Knightz

If I were to say, teams that I know have at least one awesome person with the last name of Shah, then it would be:
Champions: AEG, JJ, SMD, UNC
Challengers: NYPD, Knightz, APD

// If I were to say
for (int i = 1, i <= sizeOf(elite8("2012").teams), i++) {
if ((elite8("2012").teams.contains("anakh")) || (elite8("2012").teams.contains("punjab"))) {
print(elite8("2012").teams[ i ] . ": " . Champion . "< br >"); // AEG, APD, NYPD
} else {
print(elite8("2012").teams[ i ] . ": " . Challenger . "< br >"); // BK, UNC, SMD, JJ
}
}
// Yeah...

Let me put the ol' black and white, reality smackdown:

The first thing to understand is that this is not Elite 8's fault. Period. The three teams that pulled out had a responsibility to plan ahead for any hiccups (and judging by the the reasons for these pull-outs, they are less than genuine) and so it boils down to them. Pulling out of a competition hurts a lot of stake holders, but the teams that remain in the lineup get dicked the most. How?

Team's plan elite 8 sets around the other teams coming to the competition. Is it a folkish/all-guy lineup? Alright, then let's make a set to counter that. Then if major teams drop, the approach to your set kind of seems awkward and inappropriate for the new look lineup. That's a huge issue. It's a disservice to pull out of a competition, unless you have a REAL emergency. Ultimately the choice belong's to the teams, but trust me when i say this, the teams that pull out of a competition get shitted on behind closed doors for their decision to pull out. It's not a good look.

On to the current state of elite 8:

Elite 8(7) is now a brand new competition. All the wild-card/amazing line-up hype is gone. But, if you notice, there are still plenty of solid teams in this lineup. It is up to these teams to push bhangra to the next level and to show the circuit that even w/o the three heavy hitters that dropped, there is more to bhangra than these heavy hitters. It's time for a new wave of teams to become elite, and this was a blessing in disguise. Teams like JJ, Knightz, NYPD, etc. are all jostling for position and are all decently similarly situated. This competition, will help clear up a lot of debates on where each of them belongs in terms of rankings. While elite 8 is not what it was supposed to be, I urge all teams coming to bring their best and to make sure the audience is entertained! This competition is to be taken seriously, and so are the other teams (that are still) coming to it.

^^ I think this is what Swi was trying to go for. Not sure why NYPD was included in his initial "Champions" section.

Nice code at the bottom there Kinnizzzllee.

The other teams didn't get screwed the most, the audience and the circuit just did.

And I completely disagree to this approach, especially since is far from what we did and you know it. If the intention is to win/place, you don't cater to what the other teams are bringing, you cater to the judging, which is independent of the other teams competing, the audience and the competition organizers. At a competition where the judging is traditional and the other teams are bringing traditional set, you're not going to win by bringing something modern to "counter" that. You're going to bring a traditional set that's cleaner and better put together, but that's a given regardless of the line-up. It's helpful to know what the other teams are bringing, but creating your set on what you THINK other teams that MIGHT compete against you is just silly, Faiz. A gimmick here and there may not hit as hard with another team in or missing from the line-up but the overall set will stand strong no matter who is competing against it.
