Elite 8 Bhangra Invitational 2012: Update

Invite VCU! They won in 2010, and put on one hell of a performance last year as well. They had the second most points according to the Judge's sheets posted on BTF last year, which means they almost won. If I remember correctly SGPD had 88 points and VCU had 80. Makes sense to invite them. ;D

Elite 8 2012- Champions and Challengers

Champs- AEG, APD, NYPD, (missing sgpd, nj, pcbca)
Challengers- Knightz, SMD, JJ, UNC

What's your definition of champion and your definition of challenger?

If I were to say, teams that have competed at Elite 8 before, then it would be:
Champions: AEG, APD
Challengers: NYPD, JJ, UNC, Knightz, SMD

^^ I think this is what Swi was trying to go for. Not sure why NYPD was included in his initial "Champions" section.

I posted late last night and I can't remember why....cause you're right Sue, teams like UNC have just as much placing experience and deserve a champ title (wrt to nypd). My initial idea of champs and challengers had the 4 champs from the 4 regions (and conveniently were all teams that had competed at elite 8 before), and the challengers could be from anywhere (i.e. the wildcard factor of this year). So I think I placed NYPD by default as the only team out of CA East. So it's an arbitrary metric

and perl (or python i guess...) are the only accepted languages in posts. Everyone knows that!

It would make sense if they were an independent team, but the difference between them and a college team is students graduate, move on, and no longer dance for their alma mater. Also, VCU was a bit absent during the first semester. They destroyed DDA, but by January invites already being out and what not would force them to rush and create a set that they wouldn't have been able to perfect.


Still a big supporter for FAUJ at Elite.

I would say more than just APD & AEG are marquee teams.

Sorry, I haven't followed the team announcements every week. How are there FOUR US East teams? I thought at most there would be two + a wildcard if that's how the format went.

Right now you have: AEG, SMD, UNC, and JJ all representing US East
Two US West (APD, Knightz), and NYPD from Canada East.

I'm so confused.

NJ, PCBCa, and now SGPD dropped out. SMD and UNC took the first two spots in that order, and we'll see if the 8th spot is replaced. Most likely, any Canada West teams that might have been asked to replace the other teams declined an invitation if offered, probably due to inability to plan a trip to DC on such short notice or to make an Elite 8 set in time.

To be honest, I was planning to come for AEG, APD and the canada east teams (no offense to anyone else). SMD was a good choice as a first replacement, and UNC was a decent choice for a second replacement, but no SGPD really makes it hard to justify the expense for me.

Not saying that BK, JJ, etc, aren't good teams, but tbh, they weren't who I was really looking forward to see.

I think it's really sad that bhangra is turning into boxing and college football. It is so upsetting that the best don't compete against the best. All the fans are dying to see Mayweather fight Pacquiao or Alabama play Oklahoma State. It's great to have speculation on who is the best but why not have an actual competition where the best compete head to head. It's unfortunate that the defending champion won't defend their title at this competition.

I think Cal Bhangra definitely deserves it. They were definitely an underdog team that came up this year and placed at almost every comp. In the past couple years, they worked hard to fix minor issues that separated them from placing at all, but they've shown that they can hit the momentum which other "elite" (see what I did there heh ) teams have reached.

They definitely are an underdog team but teams at E8 are gonna be going 16-18 ppl, Cal would have to get alot of new dancers
