Elite 8 Weekend Review

Hey all,

this weekend i had the pleasure to attend elite 8 bhangra competition! Friday, i attended the pre-party, which wasnt packed, but it was a hell of a lot of fun seeing a bunch of noncompeting dancers and getting to dance with them.

the show started a little late on saturday, but it was kind of nice because we got to say hi to a bunch of people before the show started. the biggest problem i had with the actual running of the show is that people were allowed to walk around freely in the aisles during performances. its kind of crazy that even teams didnt pick up on that fact that if you walk around the aisles while another team is mid-performance it is both distracting to the audience and blocks the view at points. simple fix would be to have the ushers hold everyone at the gates until a performance is over. also, its not a problem but does anyone know why elite 8 doesnt do intro videos? it just seems like a common thing, and im sure theres some reason as to why they dont do them.

after the show we went back to the hotel and got ready for the after party. the hotel staff was AMAZING. they understood that we wanted to have fun and didnt really get pissy about noise complaints or anything minor like that, and they let us chill in the lobby and be as loud as we want. the after party was kind of what you expect... loads of dancing, loads of pda, and loads of tempers flaring. but overall i feel that the staff kept problems to a minimum. to all those who attended the afterparty, was there only 1 bathroom (like 1 single room with a single toilet) in the entire place?

overall this weekend was amazing. had a great time with the teams, and bigggggggg ups to Waleed, Lovepreet, Amarpal, and the rest of the elite 8 staff for organizing and running such a successful weekend. as expected, elite 8 was a great experience, and i'm definitely looking forward to elite 8 2012!

p.s. im very tired... got back at 8:45, practice at 9-11, and now studying for a midterm. wooooo reality...

When you've got Nikhil Gunvantrai Desai introducing the teams, who needs intro videos?!

the show was great. the mc did a great job, exhibition acts were enjoyable, and all teams brought their A game. nachdi and sgpd were my favorites to win it. videos will never do justice.

the afterparty was whack. warehouse loft? seriously? that venue was mad jaloose. it was literally a runned down warehouse. and $50 cover for people without tickets? and people with tickets having to wait an hour? you gotta be kidding me. get a bigger and nicer venue next time. that ish was mad grimey. also, the music was 99% bhangra. wasn't there supposed to be different rooms playing different music, as advertised? if we're paying 20-50 bones, you better deliver.

and how is it that first place only wins $1000? it was clear during the show that there were a lot of sponsors and there's only one cash prize pay out, yet it's only 1G for the most "elite" team in the continent? the organizers must be banking it.

+1

show = fantastic. mc worked the crowd well, and the teams tore it up. sgpd definitely deserved first place, with nachdi jawani/vcu being a close second. overall, one of the best shows i've ever been to.

hotel = very chill staff. very understanding that people came to have a good time, and didn't rain on anyone's parade with noise complaints, etc.

after party = major let down. venue was a warehouse. reminded me of the Saw movies. half of my group waited 2 hours, just to be told when they got to the front of the line that the cover was arbitrarily bumped up to $50. that's legit fleecing right there. And the lack of music variety was also a bummer. only bright spot was deep jandu singing live.

there were two singles in the main room and one other in one of the back rooms that no one really knew abt and was wayy cleaner lol

the way the entry to the party was conducted was def ridiculous..it wasn't even really a line so much so as a giant mob...after half hour they finally decided to split the line into ticket holders and non ticket holders and then things moved a bit faster (for ticket holders at least)

i agree that the party was a bit too heavy on the bhangra music...im pretty sure there were different djs in different rooms so they def could have mixed it up a bit more

that being said, i was pleasantly surprised that it didn't end at 3 like most DC clubs...i think we were there til almost 4, so that was nice

i also agree that at the show the ushers should hold late-comers until the end of the current performance...the girls in front of me were superr annoying, getting up and leaving every 5 min...the show was great overall, tho...all of the teams killed it and the mc moved things along smoothly and quickly

overall, def a great wknd, already pumped for next year lol
