Hmmm.....

When do you cross the line between teaching about the art-form and beauty of Bhangra and teaching about the culture of Punjab? When does Bhagat Singh have anything to do with Bhangra? I realize that Bhagat Singh was a brave martyr and very admirable figure in Punjabi history, but Bhangra is a dance form, and not a means to tell cultural stories or re-tell history. Didn't Virsa pull out a Bhagat Singh poster at the end of one of their performances?

I'm just curious.

i was taught that you should touch and respect the dhol because without it, there would be no bhangra. you touch the stage because without it, there would be no place to perform. Another reason why I touch the stage is to have a safe/injury-free performance. Its just like when kabaddi players touch the dirt before entering a match. Some dholis touch their dhol to the ground before and after performing so that they may have a successful performance. Its almost as if you become one with the environment in which you are performing. Sub consciously you become in the zone. Now, bhangra is definately something that is very fun to do, but there are serious aspects as well (which are mentioned above). I dont mean to make it sound like some sort of divine ritual, its just something you do. Theres nothing religious about that. I think its more spiritual................and vick, your boy, barry bonds used to point to the sky every time he hit a home run. Is it because he needed something and God came through? How frequent did he practice religion? loll

Dude, he points to the sky in remembrance of his father... I'm more religous than Bonds' is, and we all know how religous I am... hahaha...

Vick that's pretty strong and yet what you say is true. But getting into practicing religion and how frequently you do it is a whole other ballpark.

I didn't mean that our mission is to spread religion. That's mad jehova's witness. That's not what I said at all. I'm saying believe in something for motivation, and if you can be part of a team and come to these competitions to win trophies and money, than have a drive that's greater than all that stuff. While you can be rewarded for doing well at a competition, the means to preparing for it should have even more value, and part of the mission that we should commit to is along this concept.

Mission: building confidence and NOT foolish pride...

And touching the stage and the dhol is taken seriously by all the traditional teams or teams that claim to be traditional. You know what it means, but the people who really believe in doing it, do so because of spiritual conviction and respect for the dance. It's like a basketball player coming out and slapping the floor when he's setting up defensive formations.

Nikhil I'm not gunna lie to you buddy, but I'd say 85% of people have no idea why they touch the stage... They just do it cause they see others doing it. Like I said before, touching the stage means nothing if you don't practice religion on a consistent basis. I will never be convinced that most "traditional" teams are religous in some way or another, I think that's pushing it pretty far. You as an individual, you know your stuff, I can see you doing it and I'd have respect for you, but I can't say that about everyone who does it. You fall in the 15% that knows wassup... And maybe you can explain to me where JATT(the team) belongs in all this talk of traditionality... hahaha....

Yea bhangra and Bhagat Singh have no direct connection, but i was talking about the culture... bhangra is a part of Punjabi culture...bhangra comes from Punjabi culture....so i say one needs to understand the culture to understand the other many great things that come from it(like bhangra)

also to just expand the kids knowledge of the culture so they won't think being Punjabi involves drinking, beating wives, saying "pancho" and fighting.
