just finished my update ... works like a freaking charm, i love it! for those who are cautious about bugs and such ... i've been playing around with all the new features and haven't come across any problem. nothing has slowed down and what was already so easy to use just got even easier.

Ive jailbroken and unlocked my 3G on IOS4 and everything works smoothly I even have multitasking and all that great stuff!!! WOOHOO!!!!!

i have a normal iphone 3gs ... no gold developer mumbo jumbo, and i'm telling you everything works fine. even the stuff you have on the list is all working fine for me. those who are encountering those problems are doing something wrong in the update process. like BDR said, his is working fine and i know at least 4 others who did it yesterday and neither of them have problems. if you are tech savy you should have no prob with the update, and for those who aren't as tech savy just wait it out until you can have your hand held through the process

Not to fear as I am pretty sure you can enable multitasking however you have to jailbreak it first. Apparently Apple limited both the older iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G for multitasking in iPhone OS 4 due to lower amount of RAM on these devices.

just open itunes and it will ask you if you want to install iOS4 (has to be the newest version)
