Forum Design Update? [POLL]

Do you guys think it's time this forum gets an update? I mean, the forum's work and all, but it seems kinda' outdated. I think we should switch to something more... modern? (I guess this question is directed more towards the administrators, but the general question is for everyone.)

Hey man, thanks for bringing it up. I've been having conversations with some BTFers regarding design and function, including an open question posed on our Facebook page. I've been meaning to bring up certain parts of it here, primarily about what functionality are you looking for. When we introduced by-topic facebook liking and sharing (and/or tweeting), we found almost zero usage of these features, and I removed them. So we need to strike the right balance and give people what they're looking for.

I'll definitely be following up within the next few days on thoughts on improved features and design. To let you know what my current thought is, though, there are some interesting new forum softwares out there that look and feel more modern, but there's certain key functionality (e.g. Media Center) that would need to be rebuilt in addition to orchestrating a move of BTF's database and storage.

I think the Like comment thing would be good like they have on facebook. Than threads wouldn't be spammed by people quoting good points.

I agree with that. It would be pretty awesome to have BTF on the go. I made a separate forum conversation and poll for that.

An iPhone application would be cool. I can view BTF on Safari on my phone but the experience isn't the same on such a small screen.

i don't think a site redesign is necessary, but i think we could get a few tiny improvements here and there. like has anyone else noticed that BTF, at particular times, is always slow? do you guys share server space with some other forum? like early in the morning (PST), the site always seems to lag.

Four times daily (at 1 am, 7am, 1pm, 7pm EST) BTF does an automatic database backup. It takes anywhere from 45-90 seconds, during which you'll experience slowness. But there shouldn't be (and I haven't seen) slowness outside of these brief windows. Does this fit the experience you see?

and maybe changing the current search tool for the forum into a google widget tool? i use google site search to look for things on this forum because the search bar we have is horrible. and because it doesn't look for close equivalents of keywords (e.g., teray vs. tere), it's uniquely ill-suited for our forum, which uses a lot of non-english language whose romanization isn't standardized.
