Free the Street Children: Lost Childhood

Our partner in India, Utsav Bains, made yet another documentary regarding street kids and this time around it's about how they're treated by the police.

Today India has the highest number of street children in the world more than 20 million. Street children are children who live or work on the street. The Indian Police suffers from a disease of extorting hafta or protection money from these poor children. The police in routine illegally confines these children in Police Lock-ups on the pretext of investigation into petty crimes and uses torture inside the police lock-ups to extort money from the children under the threat of fabrication of false cases against these poor children. Children who pay the extortion money are let off and those who are unable to pay are framed in false criminal cases and sent to jails.

The misery of the children does not end there . In the jails they are made to live in the worst conditions. They are not allowed to come out of their small rooms for days and are kept in solitary confinement. They are tortured even inside the jails. There are thousands of innocent children still languishing in jails all over India. They all deserve the childhood we all had.

Its not just third world countries, its everywhere. Unfortunately, in third world countries its much more out in the open. Yet, it happens everywhere, including here in the states. Here, the government works with the media to quiet it down instead of exposing it for what it really is. Things have leaked out in the past though, such as numerous cases of inappropriate beatings and etc my cops, especially in areas such as the South. There were also the mistreatment in Guantanamo Bay of the prisoners by the guards; and all throught the country there were cases of mistreated immigrants after September 11th who just disappeared and then were found months later in the hands of the government. So really, its not just a problem in these third world countries, its a problem with humanity, and videos and documentaries such as this one do an excellent job of bringing to light what horrendous creatures humans can be.

It's really sad to see that this stuff still goes on in our countries. We all need to stand up against this injustice..if we don't do it then no one will.

Unfortunately, we've also seen what standing up against these injustices leads to. If you do it in India/Pakistan, you're shot down, harassed, etc. Rarely does someone get the point across; and when they do, it's usually because they or those helping them at higher levels of office have something to gain from it. As far as this country goes, well, they're pretty much similar. You can protest as muc has you want but only that will be done which benefits those in higher power. They'll hear to your appeals when they need your sympathy vote.

What can be done to help then? I mean how can an average person make a difference, besides spreading the word on these heinous crimes???

An AVERAGE person can just spread the word and hope the right person picks up on it. I'm not saying you should just sit there and let everything happen, its your right as a person to stand up for what you want; and until a certain issue is brought out into the public open, no one will be able to decide what it is that they should do about it. Better to be educated than remain dumbfounded in life.

Awareness is key to crimes like this. Protests are also quite helpful quite they grab peoples attention and the Indian government HATES protests. Also, work with these kids to help them establish a better life for themselves so that they can stand up for their rights
