every now and then, I like to remind uncles and aunties that Bhagat Singh was atheist, thought Hindi should be the national language of India, and believed Punjabi written in the Devanagari (not Gurmukhi script) would be the best. Misinterpreted history hurts huh?

Good point man, they probably wouldn't. I think the reason Punjabis are so infuriated with the whole Gandhi getting all the fame thing is because historically so many Punjabis have sacrificed themselves for others and get almost no recognition in the end. Even aside from getting no recognition, they are labeled as violent, and treated as terrorists. Oh and their land is taken away, over and over again. Yeah we've been screwed a lot.

Point being that history is always skewed, wrong people get recognition, and good people are labeled as bad and vice versa, but it only starts to matter to people once it deals with their own communities. People generally only appreciate icons of their own kind, cuz they're too lazy to read about others...

It's like who here actually remembers people like Toussaint Louverture, the Giddy Multitude, Pancho Villa, the list goes on and on. I remember on the rage against the machine website years ago there used to be a section of revolutionaries from the begining of civilizations, but they changed that section to something new, it was just the coolest thing I'd ever seen that people from all parts of the world and all civilizations are at least remembered on one small band website.

Um yes, Shivram Hari Rajguru ji was marathi, Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil was Bihari, so was Chandar shakhar Azad, Subhash Chander Bose was bengali, however your asking if we did care about the other two revolutionaries among Shaheed bhagat singh ji, who gandhi failed to save.

Him and gandhi are the same to me. Vohra's testimony was the main reason the shaheeds were hung and gandhi acted smart also.

On a lighter note say Bhagat Singh lived and eventually came to power and was one of the heads of a socialist India, imagine what our lives would have been like. India would have allied with Russia and China even more strongly. Instead of our ancestors and family immigrating to places like US, Canada and UK we would have immigrated to Russia, Ukraine and other Eastern Bloc places.

Same with Gandhi really. He was mad communist in the literal sense. He believed in grassroots folk communities and saw the village as the singular unit of national prosperity. When you look at it, Gandhi would have done more to preserve Punjabi rural culture than Bhagat Singh's economic beliefs would!

I'll forgive them both for their impracticalities. Gandhi and Bhagat Singh have influenced me and I focus on their over arching messages to humanity rather than the little arguable tid bits that we all like to fight over.

Happy bday gandhi. Gandhis actual effects on the world around him probably are skewed, but the thing about him (and individuals like shaheed bhagat singh, MLK, etc) was not what they did, but what others took from them and made their own. Gandhi might have sucked as a person, but he gave a lot of individuals a sense of unity that cant be taken away and is still with us today.
