oh damn, i did not see that...now i know why everyone is so upset...i retract my statement, sorry for the misunderstanding...i thought for a second people were upset for the mere fact that he took off his pugh on stage...but ripping off in celebration is a whole other story.

It's my fault that my team member took off his pagh.

I gave him a huge ass hug when I found out we placed and accidently messed up his pagh. He later told me that one of the saftey pins we use to secure our turley had actually opened up and poked him pretty hard in his head. So, taking the pagh off was by no means an ACT of celebration but more so a CONSEQUENCE of my celebration. We had also all wanted to have our paghs on because the newspaper guy took pics of all the guys in front of our trophy. He never let get go of his pagh and did not even hold the trophy because he didn't want to have his pagh leave his hands.

To anyone who was offended, I am truly sorry and even though no disrespect was intended I still agree that we should have been more careful. Also, thanks to everyone who came out to the show and gave us tons of love. Thanks to everyone posting the reviews. I am glad to know that many people were happy with our performance and do agree with the placing. As for a coed team placing over an all guys team, there's just one person's view I want to share, and ironically that person was the Coach and Singer for Heeray Punjab De. Pali paji told everyone at the mixer that even though he has danced bhangra with Pammi Bai for many years in Punjab, he did not agree at all that girls can't do bhangra. He said that on the stage that men and women were equal and the biggest challenge is to help female bhangra dancers develop a suitable but different personality while on stage. As a team we have been working hard trying to develop this new personality...I hope it was seen on stage this past weekend.

Once again thanks to everyone who came out this weekend.

Also, how do you not know that Nakul doesn't know what he's doing? He specializes in bollywood-how do you not know he also knows A LOT about bhangra?
This is how haha, but who knows maybe Sarina Jain took over this one:

.... True story Vivek. But none the less none of us have seen the scoresheets-he might surprise us.

Jasjit,
1) Regarding the phumaniyaan-there are a lot of teams doing the "pushing up" phumaniyaan instead of "pushing down." Yes, they are doing it wrong-but it's to take a traditional step and put their spin on it. If we were sticking to uber traditional guidelines, than nearly every single team in the US, Canada, and even India is doing some part of the phumaniya segment incorrectly-that doesn't make one team better than another. Judges want to see if a team acknowledges each traditional step-being judged on if each is done "traditionally" is bias. Also-ultimately it's the cleanliness of the set that determines the winner. SGPD and NJ tied for first at Bhangra Masti (sorry to use this as an example), and if I'm not mistaken-NJ didn't have a mirza segment. VCU placed third at DDA and they didn't have a mirza segment either-but I could bet you nearly every other team did.
2) I don't know how much of a traditional competition Giant is, but if it isnt a traditional competition-than teams don't get points, or get docked points, for simply going/not-going live.
3) Putting up a review of the top two placing teams at a competition doesn't prove your point. It only proves mine. Sometimes you win some, and sometimes you lose some-my statement still stands. Props to HPD for taking this in a graceful manner. Congrats to RP-finally the hard work pays off (feels good doesn't it!)

3D you guys did great. However, girls moves were pretty manly, girls dont need to be picking their legs up that high, and the last thing I want to see or anyone in that matter, is a girl to look at the crowd and scream brrruhaaaaa with a face of vengance.

--who says things like that??? I've never heard anyone say there are seperate guys moves n girls moves. Its a team sport. A team should look like one cohesive unit. Girls can be and should be just as powerful as guys and should scream as loud as they. I thought your comment was incredibly sexist. GO 3D....YOU LADIES ARE THE BEST!!! You guys got robbed at Giant!

And Heeray also got robbed...should have gotten first!!!

Wowwwww..this iss jokesss...you got to watch some more india videos bro...everyone needs to add something to their routine to make it stand outt and not be typical. That's how people remember stuff from competitionss when they see something different.

Congratulations to the placingg teamss.. a win is a winn at the end of the day. ;)

Totally agree. win is a win...

Every comp is gonna have retarded judges. Deal with it. If your going to complain about Judges at every comp then best thing to do is just stay home. And this whole talk talk of Phumniyaan goes up or down or Jhummar is done with toes n not heel, n this that is BS. If a team decides to change up a move big woop. that's what makes them look different from the rest of the teams. I have never heard of Bhangra moves being set in stone saying that teams had to do a mirza a certain way or a dhammal a certain way etc.

As for the RP thing. The kid took of his Pagh cause the pin was stabbin his head. No problem in that. It's not like he got so excited he took off his Pagh n threw it up in the air. But now that we all know what really happened nobody is going to apologize to RP after the trash talk.

So many teams have placed when they shouldn't have and so many haven't placed when they should have but it's jst the way it goes. Best thing to do is shut your mouths and work harder on ur next routine and bring it. Don't trash talk and put other teams down.

Those are my 2 cents of the day. Bored at work so decided to comment on here for once or this might be my second comment LoLz.

Neways congrats to all teams that placed.

No one is trying to spit massive hate here. My 2 cents hold on who I felt shouldve won 1st. Rp did great and from how I saw it it looked like in celebration and if it wasn't then that's good. The hate was dropped when instead of adressin the issue the comments or replies were hateful. Opinions are opinions and whether someone likes mine or not they run the same respect level as accepted or agreed upon opinions. There is a way to do jhummar and phumniyaan not feeling to comply is an opinion and choice. Heeray went up and did bhangra covered every step with grace and were flawless what more can one ask for? Ranjit you dropped massive hate, I actually love how rp dances so no hard feelings job well done on first. As for gator, girls do bhangra these days great but there is a punjabi folk dance for girls and it's called gidha and for the record I'm sure many people would agree that a girl barkaan mardi and bruhaaaa ing is a no no. That has nohing to do with being sexist. Don't play the equality card bcause women and men are equal but if a man acted like a girl we would say something about it

Anyways it's over smile be happy game 5 lakers Houston

Eh Amit go back to work saliya

Firstly, I am a huge fan of Live bhangra n have the highest respect for teams like Heeray that are able to put together a live set. But I think ppls idea of traditionality on btf doesn't even hold in Punjab anymore. I mean just look at the performances comin out now...alotta teams don't even do that phumaniya for example in even Sudhar College sets as well as Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji college. I mean people think they know everythin about traditionality n say ppl r wrong for doin stuff but look at india teams man. The whole "shaunk mittran da" piece that teams do isn't somethin thas always been there n teams like Amritsar Khalsa college do crazy shit all the time but yall don complain there. Traditional bhangra is about posture n grace n of course doing proper moves but teams also try to add stuff to make them stand out so people not only remember their performance but so that the dancers themselves are enjoying their dance. Even Heeray guys rn't complainin that they got second n stuff...they jus went there to hav fun n do their own performance.

Also, on the issue of girls puttin there legs too high or watever someone said. First of all, its disgustin for you to watch a bhangra performance n think of somethin vulgar liek that. Mayb the problem isn't the girls dancing but your own mind. Also sayin girls shouldn't be dancin is dumb cuz the basis of the argument is the same as with any sport or anythin that is dominantly done by men. Just because men start somethin doesnt mean its rite to say only men should do it. Jus as women are fightn for rights to participate in sports, women should fight for the right to do bhangra. I mean look at bhangra, its jus a dance we all do for fun. If a girl wants to dance and compete then why not? ppl gota get over their sexist selves n grow up a lil....

Im sorry if i insulted neone but thas jus my opinion n not any of my teams jus to put it out there. I respect all teams n dancers but sometimes its hard to say nothin when people are so insulting to others....Congrats to all the teams the placed n congrats to every team that even got into the competition and were able to perform n have fun cuz thas an achievement in its self.

Proper Breakdown of 1st and 2nd placings.

Heeray Punjab De

WENT ALL LIVE.

Great Intro, beautiful algozey (Pappi) crisp clean boliyan (Pali paaji) and very powerful dhol. The set was ridiculously clean, from what I saw there were no mistakes. Phumniyan, Sial Kot, Chummar, Mirza (my favorite)....I can go on but the point is that every thing was covered and was executed beautifully. I think in uniforms one kaintha was loose and that was pretty much it. Each dancer had grace, energy and smiled the whole time. All partners showed nakhre on doubles moves and there was tremendous crowd support as well. Heeray tore it up.

Biggest stand out point: Each dancer made Bhangra look so easy, the grace, energy and very essence could be seen through their smiling faces.

Rangla Punjab

Great Intro music was loud and clear and the song selection was very nice. It was a good mix in which girls were able to perform and not be "manly". Once again all the moves were covered from what I can recall. However Phumniyaan were done pushing "up". Phumniyaan are done pushing down not up. Each dancer was very clean however like I've said before, girls screaming brrurhaa isn't to appealing. The jori part was nice, got the crowd (guys moving their laks). There was grace, there was energy, it was a great set and upon them ending I knew they would place.

Biggest Stand out: Guys were great, but the girls were just as good and actually did moves that looked good for girls and weren't manly, no gimmicks- just really well done bhangra.

Conclusion.

Both teams executed very well. There were no mistakes that I could find from either team. There was one aspect that I mentioned before and that is RP performing Phumniyaan wrong. If there were no mistakes, and both teams had great intros outros moves execution nakhre you name it. Then what is left? Traditionality points????

When teams like Heeray perform first, then the traditionality points would be based off of them, no? The point is that RP danced on music, and they had girls on their team, so how can they possibly pull the same amount of points as HPD on traditionality. Traditional emphasizes live and even though a team can be traditional and on music- there is no comparison to LIVE Bhangra because that is the true form of Bhangra.

I don't know what happened, but both teams did great but there is no doubt that HPD- went live, executed, and were the more traditional and real bhangra team. RP brought it and executed just as well and clean within their awesome set but in the end the difference still seemed obvious between them and Heeray.
From what i was taught, the proper traditional way of doin it is up. And doin phul traditionally is done with the right leg, not left.
