Like everyone else...i think time has changed.
hopefully if the all-girls team works out for me...then definitely ill be adding jhummar just because its fun (like pooja said) and just for the change in choreography

Also, adding onto what varun said, if you take a look at gabroo shokeen's jhummar gidha or the other jhummar gidha on youtube, you will notice that there is a significant amount of female characteristics/movement/imitation. This does not make jhummar effeminate, the performer is just reenacting/interpreting the boli through jhummar.

i think we progress and modernise as time goes by and so should some aspects of bhangra and dance. i mean it was us way back when that decided which dance was for which gender so we can change that. if a girl can do punjab chhappha dhamaal of wutever than she can do jhoomer as well. in a feminine way. men did the same thing with giddha. they liked the aspect of it so they masculinised it and made it into malwai giddha. i have nothing against girls doing jhoomer and i agree with meistro. however we are also forgetting the artform of sammi so we should try to bring that back as well.

well if you want a traditional set, then jhoomar is a must and a routine without jhoomar is just weird.

agree....when i am just standing or waiting in line i do jhoomer...probably my favorite type of bhangra.

I think its ok for girls to do jhoomer since go-ed teams do it

Jhoomer is not a form of bhangra. It is a folk dance in itself.

Thanks for all of this input! I have tryouts today and lo and behold, tryout piece is JHUMMER!

I'll let you guys know how it goes.... I'm hoping it will be an efficient weeding mechanism.

lolll you're using only jhummer to determine who is fit for your team? Jhummer is only maybe a minute and 20 of your entire performance if not less. The rest is bhangra. I mean if you have a bit of jhummer and bhangra, thats cool, but theres no way you're gonna find a fit dancer for your team only based on jhummer.

don't guys do sammi in bhangra? aren't there a few sammi steps in most dances? i know the sammi beat is played often and i've even heard sammi boliyan from indian teams in a bhangra set

It's not pure jhummer, there are bhangra steps here and there. And as Sulman pointed out, fitness is going to be hard to determine from 1 minute routine. Yes, since I have a few jumps and bhangra steps there, I can see how energetic they may be, but fitness will be hard unless I physically check for six packs. Boys AND Girls. ;D

but you're missing the point. Based on jhummar, you can't determine one's overall range of motion while executing moves. You can't fully observe grace and posture with respect to simple bhangra actions (moves like faslaan, jandhoo sangha, punjab, dhamaal, etc). You can't make a wise decision on the skill of a bhangra dancer based on a tryout that has "bhangra steps here and there". If I was having tryouts for a Jhummar gidha team, then sure, a tryout with mainly jhummer would be feasible. We all know that jhummar is a dance that involves steps with more detail, grace, nakra, and less motion and body movement. Fitness is definately going to be hard to determine. This can be developed over time. But you have to be able to foresee the potential of a prospective team member, and jhummer is not the best way to make a solid decision. hahaha, kinnell you know I love you man, but I just wanna see that you make sound decisions eh.

Yeah Shanjeet, I'm slowly understanding your point through experience. I'm thinking of this as an experiment. I had the first day of tryout today. The thing is that I have already scouted out most of the freshmen through dancing workshops we had for them and I know the dancers at my school since it's a small school. For my small school, this tryout piece is working decently well.

The non-jhummer parts/bhangra parts are as you said were full body motions, energy steps, squats and jumps. Steps that were designed to push the limit of these guys. I could already see from tryouts who REALLY shined out and who didn't and there were only a few people that did shine. At a larger school, this method might be instant fail but at my school, good dancers are slowly becoming scarce so this worked decently for me.

I do though realize the fallacy of my thinking and you're not the only one whose told me that I've lost it. It does seem very possible that someone could do jhummer really well but suck at bhangra. Shanjeet, I love you too and thanks for all this help!
