Just do what makes you happy, I believe at the end of it you get what you deserve. Drink because it pleases you, not because it pleases others. If you enjoy getting wasted and don't mind the embarassment (both men and women) then stick with it... but don't cry about why people of the opposite sex don't take you seriously and why some of them aren't attracted to you. If you're a non-drinker don't ruin the mood by lecturing people about how wrong their lifestyle is, and how you're a bad desi munda/kudi. Live and let live, as long as it's legal just sit back and do what you enjoy.

^ i think we all deviated from the original question which was what you think of girls who drink, not why you do or dont drink.

Does anyone else find this thread obnoxious? Maybe it's just me. If I were a girl (shuttup Mow/JD) and reading this topic-whether I did drink or I didn't-I'd be completely turned off. A bunch of dudes throwing out their opinions about girls who drink... a) this isn't the kind of conversation I'd have on a bhangra forum, and b) I bet you every feminist is reading this wanting to vomit.

Sonika, to answer your question, I'm going to start off by saying that a woman should never a) look toward men for approval, or b) look toward men for validation. The only person who's approval you need-as of this very moment when I can also bet there isn't a ring on your finger-is your own.

To ACTUALLY answer your question, I give props to the girl who doesn't drink. Mad respect. But, as a guy who does drink, I would rather a girl who drinks also-but knows that there's a time and a place for it.

And to the dudes on this thread, I will say never judge a book by its cover. The girl who you see at a bar taking shots with friends or with a beer in hand might be someone you wouldn't expect. I think there's this general thought here that people who drink don't do anything with their lives, when-at least in New York-there's huge potentional for it's exact opposite. That girl taking shots at the bar with friends/with a beer in hand can be a high power [insert job title here] at [insert high power employer here]... or she can very well wind up being an amazing person who can then become an amazing wife, and an amazing mother.

Either that or it could be a girl who got roofied and needs help. It's sad that we live in a sick world where this happens.

Point still proven-don't judge a book by its cover.

I can go on, but I have work to do.
I could just modify my original post, but I decided to just repost it for emphasis with the modification.

That girl that people see wasted at a bar could have also gotten roofied and needs help. It's sad that we live in a sick world where this could happen, and the ONLY thing that people think is "F*king dumb bitch drank too much and is a sloppy mess. Not my problem."

I'm gunna let that sit in for a little while.

well I appreciate the opinions. honestly i'm just kind of appalled with the pressure to drink these days...especailly on bhangra teams. like it kind of ruins the fun for me and its very unfortunate because I am very passionate about my dancing.

Oh well though, guess we cant really change society anyways. It is what it is.

u just gotta be stubborn bout it, just cuz ur on a bhangra team doesn't mean you have to compromise your values and get smashed with the rest of the team. i gotta admit that pressure does vary depending on the team and chemistry; but there are definitely plenty of people in the bhangra scene who could care less whether you drink or not, just express your love for the music, dance, and culture and you should have no problem getting along with ppl at competitions and after parties. if someone keeps trying to pressure u into drinking just ignore em, they obviously don't get the point of being on a bhangra team.

Definitely easier said than done. Bhangra team has not been what I have expected it to be like.

sonika, i've been in the bhangra circuit for about 4 years, i believe others on this forum have been around longer. In any case, i've never had alcohol, i don't care to, and my teams that i've been on know this. There have been teams that i've been on where i'm the ONLY sober individual, oh well....if people start to pressure you and whatnot, just leave. its not worth it if you're unhappy and not enjoying the experience of bhangra and meeting other people. The only thing keeping me around in the circuit has been the nice people i've been able to meet (many due to this forum), and the fact you get a different feeling while being on stage (a feeling you really can't get anywhere else).

Here's a few lines i've heard before....
"Wait, you're a sardar and you DONT drink?! you have no idea what it means to be a sardar!" - sardar within bhangra circuit
"You really need to start drinking, otherwise, you'll never fit in" - many people within the circuit

in any case, i respect everyone the same, sober or drunk. If either individual makes stupid decisions that undermine their integrity and moral compass, well, that's just not good. I also don't meet many sober people in the circuit anyways.

teams are all about chemistry and how you get along with everyone so it does kinda suck when you don't feel like you fit in well. i don't think anyone should tell you that its a requirement to be socially active with your team outside of bhangra, so you could just try avoiding all the situations where they try to pressure you. if it still gets to be too much, just ditch the team; a big part of bhangra is having fun and enjoying yourself, i know from personal experience that once something happens and you don't enjoy being part of a team anymore you should just move on. there are other teams out there and every team is different, so dont be discouraged about it. with respect to what jasmeet wrote it is kinda disturbing how much emphasis is placed on drinking, the issue has been brought up on btf before, and there's nothing you can do about it. people are gonna do what they want to and alot of people handle themselves properly, but sometimes you do end up dealing with consequences (almost getting kicked out of hotel). just find the right people and enjoy urself the way you want to.

Not sure if you mentioned it earlier in the thread, but just curious: What team are you on, and is it all girls or coed?
