Good Exam Studying Habits

make a timeline of what you need to study (AND review)...and stick to it

I also tend to do hardcore study sessions...I reward myself with inappropriately high caloric intake or YouTube videos every once in a while...

Make study groups...talking/applying knowledge is much more efficient than writing and reading stuff (at least for me)...

Read on your own but discuss the information in groups. When you are studying, study (e.g. don't try and study with the tv on or background noise..go to the lib..it forces you)...you can't half ass it...it doesn't work...it is much more efficient that way as well...also...try and stay up with the material...read the given assignment before lecture...this point is constantly emphasized by professors but often overlooked.

Cornell note taking works well for some classes, especially sciences. http://lifehacker.com/software/note-taking/geek-to-live--take-study+worthy-lecture-notes-202418.php

Focus on what you don't know rather than polishing up on things you know well. My biggest problem to overcome was that I used to focus on and spend more time studying things I already knew well rather than take care of my deficiencies. In the end its better to be good/satisfactory in all the topics rather than excellent in some and weak in others.

Also most of the time we don't need our computer but we have it next to us anyways. Turn it off an put it away. You will get more done in a few hours without it than the whole day with it by your side tempting you to check facebook or youtubing.

Burn the midnight oil- study till you're in intolerable physical and emotional pain. Take a 3 hour nap, a 5 minute cold shower, and then do it again.

practice problems. don't just read the material and expect to do well. get your hands on any old tests and do all the problems in your textbook first without looking at the solution manual

take a 90 cent crap notebook to class and take alota notes. then first thing when you get back to your place, pull out a nice notebook and re write all of the notes in a neat and organized fashion. writing stuff down is one of the best ways to remember things, and doing it twice in the same day helps a lot. Then everyday/every other day (depending on how lazy/serious you are) read the nice notebook from start to finish. As you progress with a class you tend to forget what you did in the beginning and focus on the now so reading it from start to finish keeps everything fresh.

Do a lot of what sid said, where you re-read your notes to yourself to keep them fresh. Do practice problems, but also spend time explaining what happens in each step. Comprehension is more important than rote memorization. If you can explain it to a friend who is stupid on the subject and they understand it, then your making progress. Space it out. 1-2 hours a day will make a huge difference. Finally, Try to pace yourself with practice problems and review sessions that keep you on top of your game, and highlight your weaknesses. Before the exam study little, and spend most of the time explaining how things work, not practicing doing them. Dont study the night before, just digest what you have.

taking frequent breaks... that's my number one habit of studying and it works... you retain more information in your brain and its cool... i find it really hard to study for hours and hours on that chair
