How did phumanian develop?

I have always been wondering about how such a 16-beat set could develop from a community centered folk dance. From what I could deduce, phumanian originated in the Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir region. However, I don't understand how such a move that contains elements of so many other traditional moves could develop as a folk dance.

Did this 16-beat move develop only after bhangra became a performed dance or is it some kind of compilation of the original phumanian dance?

It is hard to explain, but any knowledge of the subject would definitely help.

I think like other moves that we see on stage bhangra, it was probably a folk dance on its own before partition and after most proponents moved to other places it died out. I am not sure too much about it but I think the SIAC guys had a good pamphlet on their website about what happened similarly to jhummar and sammi when it was integrated into stage bhangra.

are you talking about the phumanian we are all familiar with (ie, the one where you kick back one leg, move forward, kick back leg, move back, then spin)? Or the other version that very few teams use. I would assume that you're talking about version 2, that one his hard to describe.

Hahahaha thats what I think of too when I do that move but yeah I'm pretty sure that is the other type of Phumanian. Though it's only 4 beats long and completely different from the usual Phumanian but still I've heard of people saying that "the lightbulb move" is also called Phumanian.

oh, ok, i remember that second phumanian step that you are talking about.

But what about the first one, that is really popular among North American teams? Where did that come from?

VCU did both types of phumanian here at 3:43, one after the other. We didn't do "version 2" properly--it's not even the right beat to do it on--but you can still get a general idea of what it looks like.

People may have different names for both but i guess they can both be considered phumanian since they are often done to the same boli:

"phumanian pounde jadon much putt gabrooo
tael patta nu lakey
nachde eh gabroo ne soney lagde
ne tu vaek majajan ah ke"

http://youtube.com/watch?v=XueK6iHAto4

They do Phumanian 1 to this boli at 5:22

At Boston AVA did the Phumanian 2 to the exact same boli
