How did the props originated?

Hello to all BTF members,

I am Manraj from Malaysia and I am planning to write an article about the props used in bhangra and how it was introduced into bhangra in my local community newspaper. The props that I am planning to write is saaps,Khunda and kato.

From my Understanding,
Saaps
Saaps is actually a punjabi "hand-clapper".But I always wonder how it was introduced in a bhangra performance and what kind of wood is used to make it and why that particular wood.Maybe some history lesson in it?.Perhaps how does the origanal saap looks like and what is todays world of saaps the transformation of the saaps.

Khunda
Khunda is made of wood and it has a curve at the end.I am confused about the khunda because I heard that some say that the khunda was used as a walking stick by the elderly people those days. Some people said that its a symbol of pride and respect like a nobleman in the pindh. So whats does the khunda actually represent?? and how was it introduced to Bhangra?

Kato
Kato is a wooden prop that has a string attached to a bird that if u pull it the mouth of the bird would open.I have no idea why is this used in a bhangra performance so please help me out on this.

The purpose of me writing this article so that, I can re-live the bhangra scene in Malaysia and educate youths in bhangra and hopefully more youths teams would start up.If you have any materials that you would want to share you can share it at rajbajwa5411@gmail.com

Thank you

Hi Manraj,

I believe you're on the right path. I suggest you perform a search on BTF. There is so much information from the past several years that may help you out a lot.

For example, I searched for the terms "originate sapp" and came across this topic:
http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/about-bhangra/

^^ There is information in there that may help you directly.

Also, here is a excellent presentation if you're looking to introduce bhangra to any community without much knowledge of the dance: http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/basic-bhangra-presentation-%28framework%29/

All it takes is some time searching ;) You may want to try to search for a variety of terms and spellings too (i.e. some people write sapp, saap, shikke, etc. these terms are interchangeable and refer to the same instrument/prop).

Hope this helps.

By the way, do you think that you could share the article you write with us once you have it complete? This will help people in the future who have similar questions or have a similar request.
