How line should be picked at competition?

Hello Everyone,
There may have been a thread where we have already discussed these points but I was unable to find it. So I decided to start a new thread in which I want to discuss about a few questions I have and wondering if you guys can provide me with some suggestions-:

1. As we all know that not all the teams are always happy going first in the line up which sometimes is decided either through games that were played at the mixer, picking out of the hat or based on if they have submitted everything on time. I have been to different competition that have tried all these methods but some teams are still not happy with the way line up was picked and some call it that it was "not fair" according to them.

Now my question is that what do you guys think is the best possible way of picking a line up for the show during the mixer so that it is "fair" to all the teams coming to the mixer. The problem I have is if you base everything off if the teams that have submitted all the documents on time then if all the teams did submit it before deadline then which team should get to pick line up first?
If you do not base it off games that are played at the mixer then is teams really going to put any effort in playing those games and try to mingle with other teams? (Or should you do the combination of both?)

I have seen some comments lately that show that it shouldn't matter where you go in the line up if the judges are good and as long as your winning depends on the judging rubric (which I am a strong believer off) but not every team is satisfied with that becuase line up in today's competitions play a HUGE role according to the teams regardless of who the judges are.

I guess I am just trying to get different point of views so that at the end of the day when the line up is picked no team should feel like that the competition committee was not fair.

Any suggestions?

Thank You

If comps take into consideration when people submit registration materials, then they should also be sure to take into account that teams may have been taken off the wait list. I think it should be random though.

Same. I think it should be randomly drawn. Keep it by chance and not "games" the night before at the mixer. The mixer is supposed de-stress people for the competition before, not get them more hype and edgy. That's my thought on it though.

comps shouldnt use deadlines as a way to pick the show order. if a deadline is january 10th and teams a, b, and c turn in the material on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively, then its bs to say that team A should have a "better spot" in the show when all of the teams submitted the material before the deadline. late submissions should come with a penalty, but not sure what it should be.

to committees- please stop asking for things you dont need and slapping a deadline on it. dont ask for the mix a month in advance- you dont need it then and it makes teams nervous that the wrong mix will play at tech time/on stage. we appreciate everything you do, but you could definitely make your lives easier by simplifying some of the little things.

YES. All other deadlines are generally reasonable but committees often ask for mixes wayyyy too early.

mixes shouldn't be due sooner than 2 weeks before the comp, and maybe even 1 week. No one needs a mix till then, period.

This isn't a call out or a bashing of any committee. This is just my opinion from all that I have seen:

Anything to do with the performance of the team shouldn't be due until the mixer. It's easy to just bring a flash drive and dump the stuff onto a committee members laptop.

Having a rule that something USABLE must be turned in by a certain time so the committee has something is okay. But the performance is what people are coming and spending their money to see. The performance is WHY the teams are coming to your show.

Mixes, lighting, and intro videos are all parts of the entertainment value of a show. Give teams the most amount of time/opportunity to put together the BEST they can for your audience.

It's apparent to teams that nothing to do with sound and lighting happens until the day of the show/tech time anyway. (Seeing that basically 100% of the time, it's someone on lighting or sound showing up late that delays tech time.) As all of these venues are being used for many different things. And a bhangra comp probably needs something different than what was set up for the previous event.

The reason I bring this up is I've heard the committee members tell me they need to "test the mix"... if you really need to test something, download one of the many available mixes here on the forum and test with that...

I think every team needs to send one person forward as tribute the day that they get into the competition. These individuals will then be sent to a closed area where they fight until the last one stands; all the while, the competition committee watches. The tribute from the victorious team dictates what the show order will be.

The winner gets a tray of butter chicken/paneer makhini

We shall call it - "The Butter Chicken Games"

I think dance off's between the teams are the most effective way to pick a lineup. Personally, I like to be able to say that my team earned the spot in the lineup instead of being assigned one. Plus it gives you a chance to show people what your team can do if they were put on the spot to think of unique choreo with a limited time span.

Randomly pick team names out of a hat. Once a team is picked, they can select their spot in show order. Make the mixer fun and a way to mingle and interact with other people and teams. When mixer games are tied to show order, everyone is going to be unnecessarily tense and irritated. Maybe have mixer games determine which team gets an extra 5 minutes of tech time or something if you really want to emphasize the importance of them. The most important part of a mixer should be for people to make new friends and less to force teams to compete against each other.

Season 1 Episode 1 of The League. Each player picked a number out of a hat, that corresponded to a random kid in a potato sack race. They then cheered for their randomly chosen kid, and the order they finished was the draft order.

Not completely a joke though - there are ways to infuse competition and fun games within a completely random framework. Draft order in this case was still completely random (no person had an inherent advantage of landing Adrian Peterson), but it also had a game and competition involved.

Just a thought...from one of the funniest shows on tv.
