How long to learn Bhangra

Hello everybody.

Okay so I have a question. I am not a Bhangra dancer and neither have I ever danced in my life. I do want to start learning Bhangra.
How long will it take for me to learn and master the moves of Bhangra? At the moment I'm a very bad dancer. I have tried watching videos at home and copying but I'm just really really bad at it.

Also does anyone know anyone who teaches Bhangra in Sheffield?

Thank you.

U can try the Learn Bhangra App which is a good way to watch tutorials.

Also do you mean Sheffield UK? If so it is unlikely that someone with experience will be there. There is a uni society but they arent that great as of yet as they are beginners. (I taught a class there) If you want solid experience then Birmingham/Leicester is the place to go mate

Hey man, id recommend joining Sheffields uni Bhangra team, as Bhanu said they're not the most experienced yet but if you're a total total beginner it will help. I'd second the learn Bhangra app and try and learn things from there.

Depending on how much you want to put in, you could try recording a video of yourself doing a few moves from the learn Bhangra app, and try and see the things you do differently and work on those

Welcome to BTF Sunny! Here is my brief response to your questions...

Learning - a few hours to a few days depending on how quickly you pick up on things.

Mastering - decades? There are many of us that have danced for years and are still not considered "masters" of the art form. There are people here that run or teach in academies who are not masters. There are even those that got trained by "coaches" in Punjab and who danced with teams there who are not considered masters.

I don't think you could master the dance because it varies so much and there are so many elements to it. You might be a good folk bhangra dancer, but then you might suck completely when put into a more modern team... or vice versa.

Btw, the suggestions given by the two UK mundas above me are quite good. I'll add that if you can find someone locally who has had a bit of stage time/experience being on a team, that might help you learn quicker by seeing things in person and the individual helping to correct you.

Lastly, if you want some solid advice on your dancing and you're open to criticism/feedback, you could always record a short video and post it up here on BTF (if you're not too shy). There are many who could offer you ways to improve.

All the best and don't hesitate to ask anymore questions you may have,

~ Basim :)

If you want to find out more about the UK Bhangra teams and what's on offer around your city then have a look on NachdaPunjab.co.uk
This forum is mainly revolved around the North-American scene :D

But like mentioned, i think their Uni soc is the only thing around there unless you're willing to go up north or come down to London

The app will definitely get you the basics down.

Even though Sheffield are a fairly new team, It'll be a great way to meet like minded people and will probably help out. On top of that I'm sure the Manchester or Nottingham team won't mind people coming from outside to their open classes - if you're looking for more experienced teachers/bhangra groups. I'd get in touch and see if they're up for it!

Yo, you could check out the West Midlands too, quite a lot of teams from different areas which you will find there, mainly Birmingham where they have co-ed and all boys/girls teams. (but might be quite a bit of a journey for you)
But like mentioned before, if you're lazy like me just check out LearnBhangra App or just YouTube some things otherwise if you're so on it, check out the teams. ;D
