Huge Disappointment-BTF topics/ Punjab's compounding problems

First off, want to thank everyone for their prayers and support, I really appreciate this. I am actually writing from Halifax right now, getting a friend to post this, so I wont be able to check any Pm's anytime soon.

BTF: I really appreciate the site. I do. I love the added respect, I think its great. However, Im disappointed with the content of the off-topic section. I understand that everyone has the right to post what they want, thats the beauty of this site, and democracy in general. But I expected after not checking BTF for a couple of weeks, to come back to great discussions, kind of where I left off. No offense, but 'why to date a bhangra dancer', 'how to get a girl', 'so and so needs a new girlfriend'... Again no offense to those who wrote or started the topic, but like come on, are you serious? BTF off section has become a facebook wall, no place to discuss issues with some added intelligence, but somewhere to post LOL's and jokes.

There were little to no topics that I actually clicked on and read, which was disappointing. The beauty of the site, is that you write what is on your mind. The ugly aspect of that is, that means the lack of issues being talked about means there is lack of involvement or caring.

We have the most monumental election on our hands, India has been in the news constantly, and there is no shortage of topics that we can all benefit from. I am just a little disappointed.

Where is the spirituality? Where is the politics? Where are the REAL concrete issues?

Im looking at the people that I talked to before regarding the issues, please set up and bring some conscious direction to BTF.

Im off to Punjab in a month or so, so I cant wait to see this first hand, but Punjab has another problem compounding its existing problems...

Flooding.

People who keep in touch with Punjab back home probably has someobody affected by the flooding in Punjab. Due to added rainfall, (probably from global warming amongst other things) Punjab has suffered Millions of dollars in damage, but the worst part... People most affected by the flooding?

Farmers. Yeah, like they needed another problem? In addition to 15 people dieing, the estimates are around 30% of Punjab's farming areas being affected. 30 %!!!!! Imagine, 30% of America's steel workers, car factories, etc... being affected? Devastating right? Not to the western media, and even Indian media, and thats why you wont read a lot about it.

Punjab had used its emergency funds to deal with the farming crises before hand, which has left little funds to deal with the flooding. However, the Indian government has stepped in, offering the Punjab 3,000 crore for the damage (which is estimated at around 1,000-1500 crore)

Currently the estimated relief for each farming problem, around 2,000 rupees. Opposition parties and some agencies believe it should go up to around 20,000 Rs.

the consequence of the flooding: vegetables are not being produced as per demand, the farmers are killing themselves again, and there is lack of attention outside of Punjab. Its disappointing.

THe Indian army has called in to deal with the problems, so we will see...

Thought I would just post on an issue that has no gotten any attention in west... .

Welcome back Summy, and thank you for bringing to light a topic I had not heard of recently. Reading BBC, i see this article on flooding in Bihar and the support package, is this the same timeline/aid package as for Punjab?

Summy, if you had a friend write that post for you because you cannot check the site, how did you know what the current topics were in the Off-Topic forum?

Summy, I'm sure others will agree with me when I say that your topics are always interesting to read and my perception of you has changed dramatically (significantly for the better) from the POL Summy image that was portrayed.

But in regards to the Off-Topic forum, it IS Off-Topic. It is meant for humour and fun and everyone is entitled to whatever stupid thing they want to say. Yes, I love the intellectual discussions but I love the stupid shit too.

Summy,

I was actually going to make a post very similar to this regarding...the really stupid topics that have been posted lately...it seems that with you has gone all the intelligent discussion on this forum and although stupid topics every once in awhile keep it light...there hasn't been any good discussions lately...although McCain's running mate....is a good one...whatever the case...Summy if you could come on once in awhile, as I know you are very busy...if you could spare even five minutes of your time to spur some discussions...that would be much appreciated.
