What's up BTF! It's been a pleasure being one of the captains for Husky Bhangra this year, and we were hoping to get some thoughts on our set for next year's leadership to keep developing this team. We only had a few performances this year, performing at Bhangra in The Heights, Bulldog Dhamaal, and then Crossroads of Bhangra competition where we placed 3rd. Below is the video from Crossroads. Our set remained mostly the same as we trained all year to work on our form and stamina as much as possible with more inexperienced dancers. Appreciate any feedback on the video from dancing to set too etc!

Some shoutouts:
  • Columbia Bhangra for the hospitality at Heights again, definitely a great showcase and a great weekend overall.
  • Yale Bhangra for having us at Bulldog Dhamaal this year.
  • Judges and Crossroads organizers for our first experience at that comp, and to our liaisons for actually being dope liaisons at Crossroads.
  • DJ Chet for the dope mix this year and being so easy to work with! Definitely recommend other teams check him out!
  • Shoutout to all the teams at Crossroads, congrats to Northwestern and Wisconsin on their placings as well!

Congrats on 3rd!

I like some portions of your choreo. Appreciated your creativity. You used your formations to enhance your choreo. Big plus! The set did feel slightly disjointed. Nice throwbacks in your selection! Transitions between segments need work, and other segments went by too fast. Khundey was one of those.

It's great to try to be creative with the choreo, but the choreo lacks an impact when execution is not up to par. Big think to work on is crispness. Best example is at 6:40. Most your dancers have different arm positions, some have leg up others leg down. There are quite a few moments like that throughout the routine. In addition, dancers would be late to spots, squat late/early, and overall did moves different from each other. All these things fall under execution. The circuit is demanding high execution, so overall pick it up in that category.

feel free to private message me if you want more specific suggestions and critiques

Great to see what you've done with inexperienced dancers. Keep it up, and look forward to seeing more of you in the future!

Proud to see HB placing. With regards to set design, you guys have definitely incorporated the idea of strong drops, but a lot of drops are stagnant-in the sense that the choreo is creative, but everyone is in place for the entire drop, which can be a bit repetitive and simplistic if done too much. You guys do a good job of throwing in movement in build-ups though.
Red jodi (esp red girl jugni), blue girl and green girl had strong modhe throughout the set. Black guy needs to not take breaks in the back and have more modhe given his level of experience. The rest of the team I understand is relatively new and for those dancers: keep your heads up, your arms controlled and your legs a bit wider.
Congrats on the placing!

You guys do some really nice things with the set but the biggest thing holding you guys back is the hammering of fundamentals. some which will take time, some that can be fixed instantly that'll take you up a few notches. Another thing is mix. It didn't help you which is something you should really take a look at moving forward

Here are notes i took while watching. (only watched once) where I expand upon the note leads back to the above!

- Lookin ready to go.. love it
- movement on stomps... Green guy is perf example. The movement didn't allow you guys to actually execute the step. could be a set design flaw (the movement) or you guys need to hammer that step and make sure everyone nails the execution

- movement is super smart from the lines going through the other lines though the drop. Well designed
- love the setup of the drop of jumps and batike
- footwork is pretty weak. want to see that bigger and

- jhoomer in the bhangra segment came out of no where but no mix change.. utilize mixing to accentuate change.

- movement could be smarter at the bicep drop
- put some rumaals on the khunde!
- arm timing a bit off
- nice choreo with the khunda drop choreo. execution fell flat bc of sync and rumaals missing imo

- de le gera drop. if it was in jugni footwork woulda hit harder. meaning, hammer the fundamentals. it'll make you guys look bigger, stronger, and more mature

- i love the stuff you do w freezing in baitke

- shoulders non existent in jhoomer. (work on the fundamentals)

- nice job with the transition out

- Choreo is real nice through the whole jugni segment

- the side to side leaning wasn't set up well for it to hit. Try to plan/design that a bit better

- freezing took a while.. but was really neat. need the mix to help out stuff like that because it could hit even harder

- that foot thing was the first sound effect i can remember. and it worked!

- You guys hit the jumps, but I was surprised cause you looked gassed based on your footwork being very lack luster. really gotta work on that.

---------

In conclusion,

- You guys should really hammer footwork, shoulders, and posture. It will bring the set out more and make you guys look much much better.

- You guys know how to design sets. And the reason I say that is: there are bouts of neat stuff in there and good formation planning. BUT, you also have the opposite.. Don't let that be a thing. Create a set from A-Z that works and flows well.

- Please do invest in mixing, whether it be internally or externally. The audio has to match the visual and vice versa. The audio will help bring out your creativity.

Let me know if you guys have further questions!
