this is a GOOD question. I never really get to know how our mixes sound in an auditorium. They bump in my car, bump in my headphones. I just hope they bump when we're on stage.

im pretty sure if you call up the competition people they tell you what type of speakers they are and what they handle, so just EQ for that certain purpose , if i were you i'd bring a normal EQ'd copy and one for the comp. If the comp one fails, use your normal one during rehearsals

The whole point is that at dress rehearsal you can ask the sound engineer to bump certain frequencies. If it's clean, they can handle it. If your mix is redlining all over the place it won't sound crisp.

So if we keep it from redlining, but say the bass isnt high enough, they can put it up a bit for the show?

to be honest, at for me, i just put a light compressor/limiter over the entire mix. It looses very little depth but it prevents redlining throughout. Louder sounds get dimmed, quieter sounds get boosted, and you have an overall consistency. SOMETIMES bass doesnt hit as hard as you want but i think bass is a little over done anyways.
