mind=blown....actually, shutter island was mind=blown

inception: mind=raped

theories on the ending ?

In the end I think hes still in limbo because first the top didnt stop spinning but besides that, you have his kids who are wearing the excat same clothes as before and are digging for the exact same worm that they were in his dreams as projections. One thing is that what was actually happening was an inception inside of an inception. That all the crew members were all hired by his father (remember he personally chose the new architect) to carry out this inception so that he would finally let go of mal's memory. Thats why the girl is there the whole time trying to get him to let go of her memory. Also, remember at the ending, when old saito is talking to cobb in limbo, he touches his totem and before it was said that another person wasnt allowed to touch the totem...maybe saito was the greatest architect of them all and that the whole movie was just a dream that saito created. Also, in the end, before he leaves the airport, everyone smiles at him. Not because of the completed job on fisher but because they were successful with the inception taking place in cobbs head. Lastly, when his father says welcome, he doesnt actually say welcome...he says "you're welcome", the "you're" is very faint, mentioning maybe that everything that has happened has been done for him.

edit: it could be possible the whole thing is a dream because remember cobbs totem was actually mal's, and remember a totem can only help a differentiate relatiy and a dream for one person and one person alone

One thing that was funny was right when it ended the packed square one famous players theatre simultaneously went....fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuc

i am inclined to believe it is reality because the top did wobble right before the credits came up and apparently there was the sound of it dropping after. the cast has also hinted towards the sound of it dropping as well.

what puts doubts is that the kids didnt age and were in the same clothes. but what i got from it was that cobb didnt care at that point and he walked away without waiting to see if it stopped spinning.

yeah thats what i thought, but the totem isnt his, it was mol's, so for it differentiate between reality and dream would only work for mol, not him

this movie was a bigger mindfuck than memento lol

loll good finds gurbirr, and yeah man this movie was amazing, i wasnt feeling shutter island. But yeah man it was amazing, i think he was still in limbo because what really brought down the movie was after the girl got the kick and cob was left in the inception and never showed how he got to the limbo where saito was. Other than that it was amazing and i totally agree with you on the same clothes thing. projections?

p.s. could of found a better actor for mal

yeah i completely agree with you gurbir, the fact that his kids were looking for the same worm or whatever and how they were wearing the same clothes as depicted in his memory
at the end, i had no idea what to belive, whether it was a dream or reality.
overall one of the best movies i've ever seen and deffintely one of the best movies this year right next to toy story 3 :D lol

While yes a totem is only for one person, one of the first times he takes Ariadne into his dream and Mal comes in, he wakes up and demands to see his totem from Arthur, who then explains the concept to Ariadne. This means that it is wholly his now, and also Mal is no longer alive to even use it. I am also inclined to believe that it was reality but, it really is a toss-up kids the same age/clothes, top doing whatever, and of course did he get out of limbo again? It was a great, great movie, though I disagree, Momento was significantly more of a mind fuck.

Exactly, the totem worked for him. Also, recall throughout the movie, when he would come out of dreams, he would use the totem, WHICH WOULD FALL. So in all theory, if they were falling before he went in for that final 3 level dream, when he came out it would still fall. He didn't wake up out of any other dreams/transition into any different realities. I fell for the little gimmick at the end, and called it. It was too easy a ploy, but despite the kids age, etc (which all pose pretty significant factors), it really comes down to this. The little top totem would fall in the world HE believed was real, and wouldn't have fallen if it was not real, because that was the point of his totem. It kept falling throughout the movie when he would come out of dreams, so unless theres some absurd fact i'm missing, it should have just fallen at the end as well. Thus, not a dream.

Pretty good movie, can't lie though I felt like it moved too fast when shit was going wrong towards the end, i found it a bit hard to keep up with for a few moments, and I'm usually good with understanding complex plots. Nonetheless, well made, great thriller.

Also a side note, theres rumors that DiCaprio's friend Arthur in the movie, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is going to play the Riddler in Batman 3. I thought he was sick. Anyone remember him from Angels in the Outfield and 10 things I hate about you? dude was in movies we used to see growing up.

Yea, I thought he was fuckin amazing. His demeanor was sooo good. I also really liked the shifting gravity/zero gravity fight scenes. And I think he would be a pretty good Riddler, as long as it isn't Depp. Although honestly, I'm still waiting for my favorite Batman villain, Mr. Freeze. Batman 4 hopefully!

EDIT: He has also been in (500) Days of Summer and The Lookout. I highly recommend. He has a pretty broad resume...

im convinced it was reality. yeah they were wearing the clothes and yeah they were digging for the same worm BUT if anyone remembers, earlier in the movie he DID explain that in the memory, the kids dug for the worm but he never got to see their faces as the kids turned and left. thats why every time he imagines that same memory you never see the kids faces until the very end implying that what happened at the end was real.

however, i could be wrong. as said before, this movie was a complete mind fuck! but amazing movie nonetheless

he avoids looking at his children (thoughout the movie) because he thinks he'll become fooled into thinking he's in reality if he looks at them and becomes attached to their images. He closes his eyes that time cuz Ariadne told him "don't lose sight of yourself, find a way out" and he needs to let his wife pass on.

I was caught up with the kids being the same age and wearing the same clothes too, but if you look on imdb in the "cast and credits" they actually list 2 actors to play like 20 month old James and 3 yr old James, and a 2 yr old and 4 yr old Phillipa (something like that i'm forgetting the exact ages). I saw the movie twice and I think they are wearing the same clothes but they look a LITTLE older and they are wearing shoes this time, unlike in his hallucinations. What matters is that he walks away from the top, he doesn't care if he's in reality or dreams anymore, he's just happy to see his kids and move on with his life.

The theory that an Inception was performed on Cobb himself is an interesting one. If you remember the random people tailing him in Morocco (why would that be happening), the wall-crack that somehow was too narrow to squeeze through, and how Saito magically arrived in a Mercedes to save Leo from the chaotic chase scene, it starts to seem like that was just one of Leo's dreamworlds. How can Saito be powerful enough to just "make a phone call" to get Cobb back into the US? Also in Greek mythology Ariadne spun a spool of thread for Theseus to help him find his way back out of a maze, just like in the movie she helps Cobb let go of Mal and find a way out of his maze/elevator thing with all those levels. Throughout the movie she's like his therapist asking questions about his feelings all the time, and she designs mazes on paper and in her imagination to implement the plan.

Another interesting thing I read was about Cobb wearing or not wearing a wedding ring. Apparently if you look out for it throughout the movie, he's wearing a wedding ring in all the dream scenes and no ring in all the real-world scenes. At the end with the spinning top, he's not wearing it. Supposedly whenever he's in a dreamworld his subconscious brings mal back and he wears the wedding ring cuz he's imagining that they're still married - she's practically real to him in the dreamworld - he often goes there to spend time with her, and the Juno girl Ariadne walks in on him doing that a bunch of times. But in the real world it would be awkward/weird for him to wear it since she's dead. So this suggests he's back to the real world in the end....

If I remember correctly, I don't think he was trying to avoid seeing his childrens' faces throughout the movie...but rather, in that particular memory (which he stored away), he did not see his childrens' faces and therefore had no ability to put faces there when recalling the memory in the first place. This is one reason as to why Cobb may end up in the real world, because he actually can see his childrens' faces (and not to mention that the whole ending scene at his house is completely different from his stored memory).

I think your points are spot-on, Arjun...and the most convincing to me so far...and I agree that the fact that he got OVER Mal was the more important aspect of the story...I think the debate on whether Cobb got out of reality or not is the director's means of having his viewers further question the idea/process of "Inception" (aka if end=real-world ergo "Inception" is possible). I, for one, need to watch the movie one more time to make my final decision..but I'm leaning towards Cobb ending up in the real world.

Just follow his wedding ring, it is the only consistency...once you spot it, and follow it, you will be able to parse through reality and dream...

i think he was in the real world at the end...i watched it twice and i didnt even notice the wedding ring but i guess the fact that he didnt have the wedding ring at the end also shows its reality. i feel like he was in the real world at the end because he had to wake up the chinese old guy to make the phone call, and after the airplane scene the chinese guy does wake up looking confused and obviously having spend alot of time in limbo.

i think they made the kids wear the same clothes and in same position just to make it more similar to how he remembers his last time with them so that its more dramatic when they turn and we actually see their faces this time

movie was too crazy...right now we could all be in limbo. nikhil justin :)

apparently its only a matter of time until people start commiting suicide after watching this movie. People have some serious issues man. People started commiting suicide afte watching avatar because they thought this world wasnt enough for them, they needed something like pandora. Now those same idiots are gonna be shooting themselves to get to limbo....once again...a fictional place. Meh, natural selection at its finest
