Jashan 2010 would like to take this opportunity to thank all teams and spectators that helped make our very first competition an amazing success. It was a pleasure hosting you in our city and we are set to do it again next year!

Jashan 2010 congratulates our winners:

1st place - $2500 prize: Pehchaan Apni Nachdi Jandi (PANJ)
2nd place - $1500 prize: Shan-e-Punjab Arts Club
3rd place - $750 prize: Apna Virsa Academy (AVA)

Best Dressed: Apna Bhangra Crew (ABC)

Punjabi Spirit - $1000 prize: Apna Bhangra Crew (ABC)

The Punjabi Spirit Award signifies the importance of what this event and what our Punjabi culture means to the Jashan 2010 Planning Committee. The Punjabi Spirit Award had nothing to do with the performance of the team on stage. Instead, it had to do with how the team worked with the Jashan 2010 Planning Committee in the planning of this event, how it interacted with our volunteers, and with other competitors. This award originally came with a $500 cash prize, which was then matched by a sponsor who also values the importance of Punjabi Spirit and wanted to make sure it was highlighted.

Congratulations to Apna Bhangra Crew (ABC) for receiving the Punjabi Spirit Award. From the moment we received your application to take part in Jashan 2010 to your arrival and even now in our post event conversations; you have given us respect, love and a sense of pride. You embody Punjabi Spirit and we hope this inspires you to continue doing what you do.

When we set out to plan Jashan 2010 we knew we wanted to create an experience for each competitor and each spectator that would leave them feeling proud, inspired and energized and we hope that is what took place. Throughout the weekend we stressed the importance of Punjabi Spirit - for us this means respect, sincerity, friendship, and most of all the ability to foster community spirit and pride in what we all share. Our goal was to make you feel like family, and we hope everyone in Calgary was able to do that.

We want to continue with this positive Punjabi Spirit and therefore ask that this thread be about the competition as a whole, and not about negative team rivalries. If you had posted a review on the other thread, please copy and post onto this thread.

Although the competition is done and the teams have all gone back home, Calgary is still buzzing with excitement from the magic they saw on stage. We are working to make sure pictures and videos are available soon so that everyone can see moments from Calgary's first international Bhangra competition.

We encourage all teams/spectators to email us at jashanbhangra@gmail.com with suggestions and/or feedback etc. We promise to bring you an even bigger and better Jashan 2011.

Our heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part in Jashan 2010 - A Symphony of Punjabi Spirit.

Congrats to Jashan for what seems to have been an excellently run competition, it's a shame that the competition thread has been overhauled with drama, nice call on starting a new thread.

I love the idea of the Punjabi Spirit Award. It's exactly what competitions need to promote a friendly and sportsmanlike atmosphere. While competitions might not have the resources to make it a large cash prize, I strongly encourage them to embrace this concept. Let's commend teams that ARE there for the love of bhangra and promoting Punjabi culture in a positive manner. I'd take this over a People's Choice Award any day!

Copied from the other thread.....
Before I get into a review, just wanted to congratulate Jashan and the amazing organization for a job well done!

Before the competition weekend, organizers were in touch with the teams, making sure everything was right and nothing went wrong for the weekend. We checked into the hotels (amazing hotel), we recieved a huge food basket loaded with goodies (not the cheap stuff), Jashan shirts, personal jashan water bottles and each captain got a personal thank you card signed by the organizers for coming to Jashan with a giant chocolate cowboy boot! They had organized practice rooms for us at the hotel and the YMCA located close by to the hotel which was greatly appreciated. The mixer was different, each member of each team had to sit at seperate tables so everyone actually mixed! They had great raffle prizes and gift prizes (some valued close to $200). The day of the comp, everything ran on time, breakfast was decent, 20 min rehearsal, venue is amazing. The actual comp started on time, mc's were great, short and sweet. Venue was completely packed, almost 2100 people. Our liason JASMEET was sooooo awsome, was there every time we needed her!! Jashan, spent roughly about $80,000 for the comp and you could see it, even in the lil details. On top of everything, Jashan is non-profit!! One of (if not), the best competition PANJ has gone to!

PUNJABI SPIRIT I highly appreciated the main point of this competition and what the weekend and show really was about. Harjit Singh (first Sardar in the Canadian armed forces) was a great honorable guest to have at the show and mixer. I enjoyed all the organizers stressing how important the punjabi culture really is and how badly they want our community to succeed. this definitely set this competition apart from any other competition.

Before the mixer, 2 members off of every team got to sit and have a pre-comp judging meeting with all the judges. Got to ask any questions, vocalize any concerns, and had the opportunity to listen to other teams questions and learn what the judges were looking for. Such a smart idea. I recommend all comps to follow in this step.

Didn't get to see all the teams, only the first couple. A special shout out to GHG for giving every team a box of ladoos to welcome us to Calgary!

AVA: these girls can dance. This was the first time ive seen the team perform and i was impressed by the girls nakhre and how the girls mostly dance the same. Red and yellow joris are really strong and carry most of the performance. Some formations were off, some girls messed up, but overall a good set.

Shan-E-Punjab very traditional routine, probably the most traditional set of the night. Energy was lacking a lil, some of the choreo and formations were basic but clean and the dancers were very technical and experienced. It was nice to see a team execute! Loved the kids, soooooooooooo cute! Slow starting but the kids helped end the routine with a bang!

ABC loved the 12 man set. High energy beginning, loved the sapp formation. Enjoyed the nakhre and energy, we were sitting wayyy in the back and I still could see everyones smiles and felt the excitement. Enjoyed the choreo but liked the formations better. Only team that hit great stunts and having the calgary flag at the end was clutch!

PBA didnt get to see the whole routine, we had to go back to get ready but enjoyed the beginning with the saranghi and the singer. Looked like the team didnt get to practice too much. One person was off in almost every formation. Appreciated the folk steps and see good things for you guys and gals

Jawani Revolution only got to see the 2nd half of the routine from the side of the stage. The first red jodi was amazing. Loved the nakhre and energy. All of you guys truly tried to sell the whole set to the judges and get the crowd involved. Mixture of NJ at Elite and some new stuff, energy kinda died at the end of the set but the crowd still enjoyed it.

Award Announcement Raju Johal was the special artist, sound system was good. Took about 15-20 mins to announce the teams but it was worth the wait

After the comp, all teams had the chance to talk to the judges, got the score sheets right away. Everything was fair and there were no questions about the actual judging.

Afterparty this was my FIRST afterparty so I didnt know what to really expect. There were buses running from the hotel to the club at different times which was really really nice. Got their around 12am and kinda looked like a high school dance but eventually it was pretty fun!! Music was great, the vibe was nice and there really werent any fights. Tons of security at the hotels, venue, and afterparty, no one even got the chance to start anything.

Overall, we had an awsome time in Calgary! Such friendly people and so much support! Congrats to the organizers, once again, for a job well done! Would recommend this comp to every team out there. Cant wait til next year!

My BIASED placings

1. PANJ
2. SHAN-E PUNJAB
3. AVA/ABC

Copied to this thread as per Request of Jashan Bhangra.... Competition Review

....this is gonna be a bit long...read if you want to know, if not scroll down and skip

We came out and saw this competition to support the explosion of the bhangra scene in Alberta and this is the review from Me and our crew.

Organization:
I heard great things about the committee and competition organization. Apparently this was one of the best organized comps to date according to some of the team members i talked to off of ABC, PANJ, Jawani Rev and Republic. That coming from these teams shows a lot for first time gig in Alberta...The only negative thing that most teams said was that the afterparty was long and dragged...Few of the boys we spoke to recommended it be something like
a) appetizers
b) ice breaker/mixxing up between teams
c) introduction of teams
d) competition order
e) dance
f) dinner

Team Reviews

GHG Exhibition
You boys are very talented and very traditional. Only thing to work on is maybe a bit of coordiation but damn the energy was high. If I remember correctly this team won a few competitions in Calgary and in Toronto and I can see why. A very Very well coached team.

AVA GIRLS
You girls are amazing. Attitude, Dance, Gimmicks, Style...only lack is of execution in a sense. The previous dances of Pioneer and Rangal were much more energetic. Some of the girls were off on beats and seemed to have gotten tired. But damn i'm hell impressed with the incorporation of traditional bhangra into your routine. This is a high caliber team with loads of potential and don't be surprised if they rip up the bhangra circut.

Shan E Punjab
This was a very very cute performance due to the kids. The dance was very well executed, moves kept traditional and simple but with energy. BUT personally I think they should not have placed. I am not sure if this is true but apparently they got a placing because of them being a junior team and having younger kids. In a junior competition this team will be deadly. These kids when they get older are to watch out for. I don't think its fair for getting cute points for kids on a team. Yes i'm probably gonna get ripped for saying this but its what i Think...its like affirmative action...the other teams should have gotten a placing because their dances were better but because this team had kids they got it for the cute factor.

ABC
BOYS BOYS BOYS...you f*cking ripped it. The flag gimmick, the dance, the execution, the energy, the end 3 man stunt, the songs....STELLAR. But there were few minor glitches...some of the guys lacked full energy all the way through..they would go crazy on some songs and get lazy on others. THe majority of the boys were going ballistic but then you would see the 1 or 2 guys who were lagging. Demolished that stage you boys did.

PBA
Its hard dancing with 8 person team. Especially because the stage was big and your team was in the center for most of the dance. The NorCal performance was much better. Lack of smiles on boys maybe needs improving...the girls were beeming the whole dance. This is a young team and I think they coached by one of the guys off BABC. The Dholi (gagan i think) and the Singer/Chimpta (sorry dude don't know your name) were amazing. It was lack of being a bigger team that maybe stumped your dance. Killed the jhoomar though. The girls stepped up and at some points the girls were more coordinated and energetic. A few minor tweeking and tinkering and this team off to places.

PANJ
This was a team that had their typical routine but with a bit of spice to mix it up. Gaurav mashed it up big time, boy he is sick. The dance was very FOLK as we all say and the execution was very very very clean. This was PANJ Co-Ed. The girls are very talented and smoked it. Boys step up a little because the girls seemed to shine more. There is nothing that is negative here…the circle stunt was very unique as well as the transitions. That’s where most teams lack but damn transitions were clean. The team seemed like a younger crowd than the usual PANJ but still good for them. Was entertaining to watch, dance did not lack anywhere or get boring.

Jawani Revolution
This was apparently the Nachdi Jawani Academy boys newest spin off team. Some of the style and sequences were very well give aways for NJ. The team is young and needs more time to practice and bring it up a notch. The dance was energetic then died off with the gimmick in the middle and never really picked up until the end. There were too many sequences were dancers were coordinated but then they seemed lost looking around too much to see where they were. A few of the formations were bit sloppy and signs of a newbie team but don't worry about that becauase all teams have been there when they first compete. Over time and with practice you are guaranteed to improve.

Rangli Jawani
This is a young girls team and I actually only saw the end of your performance and based on that it was pretty decent. For being so young you girls have great ideas.

Bhangra Republik
This was the home team and they had mad crowd support. I didn't think they were that popular in Calgary but I was proven wrong. The gimmicks were really good and every time they did one the crowd went nuts. The weird thing was that it seemed like most jodhi’s was paired up with one strong dancer with one weak dancer. For Instance the Pink Jodhi the Captain (Jesse I think his name is) was very energetic and very coordinated whereas his partner was playing catch up. The Blue Jodhi the Singh Ripped it while his partner seemed too stiff. The Red Jodhi the Tall skinny one (Robie i think) was hyper, very traditional and very clean throughout the routine and his partner was lacking at times. The Orange Jodhi were the exception as both dancers were equally decent. This team had good songs and good energy but they seemed to be doing too much. The little things messed up the dance. The team needs to focus on keeping steps simple. The spins were off at some parts as well as the squats. Formations were very tight and well executed because they were simple. The mix I liked and hope they will put it up. Just one word of advice...get more dancers...with 8 you ripped the stage but try for 10 or 12 man team as then you will RAPE the stage as it more fun to watch and more opportunity for formations. This team can go far and hope to see more of you boys on the bhangra circuit.

Placing
1) ABC
2) Panj
3) Republik/AVA

ps.

1) UPLOAD VIDEOS PEOPLE so that those who missed out can see what I mean about the reviews
2) Calgary is now officially on the Bhangra Map Thanks to Jashan Committee. Big ups to all of you.
3) Enjoy it, hate it...i don't care I'm entitled to my opinion, you to yours.

REPOSTED FROM OTHER THREAD
Hi all,

My two cents? Get ready to read!!!!!!!

The show started more or less on TIME! I lost a $100 bet to my cousin who was attending her first comp so I'm kinda choked about that but good on the organizers hahaha.

They had GHG bhangra as an exhibition, what a sick dholi they had!

AVA girls were the first competitive team. They have some cute gimmicks (the gun thing...I was taken aback haha) very cute. I noticed that some of their regulars were not on stage and it showed, a couple of girls were REALLY off, missed steps, turns, squats, and generally threw it off for me. I thought their performances at Pioneer and Rangla Punjab were way better. Regardless they still had a strong performance with a killer 1st jodi and lots of girls have improved a lot. If they keep going at the pace they are going, those new girls will catch up in no time and we'll have a killer force on our hands in terms of a real traditional all girls team. Congrats on your placing!

Shan E Punjab went second. The kids were sooooooooooooooooooo cute. Their formations looked better than at Rangla Punjab but were still a bit off, I think with a bit of work on some really minor details they will look really clean. Congrats on your placing!

ABC no bias but they were sick. They had a 12 man routine which is different from their usual 10 and it worked well for them. Their formations were clean and they had awesome gimmicks. I like their fast paced style and was engaged from beginning to end with their routine. They perfectly executed a complicated stunt at the very end and was it them that brought out the Calgary Flames flag? That got the crowd around me to jump on their feet and dance along to the rest of the routine.

PBA from California went next. They have a lot of potential it's hard to do a lot with a co-ed team of 8 but hey they are from a region that usually produces top tier bhangra teams so I'm not worried that they will improve leaps and bounds.

Jawani Revolution was an 8 man team from Toronto. They had cool footwork to that song mixed with easy e. The dancers weren't as in sync as they could be. They had a kabaddi gimmick right in the middle of their routine it kind of threw me off and broke their flow in my opinion. They had interestingly unique kato work as well, their end jumps were a bit sloppy. Considering where they are from I'm sure that they too will improve a lot, these dancers have tons of potential on their own but could dance well as a team in time.

PANJ was sickkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. They had a co-ed stunt in the mela scene that was sick, and a really unique clean starting formation with sapps, a nice change from a lot of the starting formation I was seeing all night. I was really really really impressed with their co-ed team. This is what I want to see more of from them (personal opinion) I really enjoyed their performance. Lots of nakhra and interaction between dancers which made it really enjoyable for everyone watching. Congrats on your placing, I'm proud of how far you've come!

Rangli Jawani Girls did great for a younger team! I think I remember hearing that a lot of these girls were still in high school so props to them for putting a competitive routine at such a young age.

Bhangra Republik went last. They had crazy crowd support. Great stamina from the pink jodi. They had a ton of cool gimmicks which I don't want to describe in case they want to use them again this season but I really enjoyed this performance. This team has tons of potential and I'm sure the North American circuit will see a lot more of them.

My placings would have been ABC 1st, PANJ 2nd and AVA/Shan E for 3rd. Don’t worry ABC you have a few more comps ahead of you and I’m confident in your winning abilities!

On a side note I only heard good things about the committee and their level of organization, even from teams that felt placings were unfair which says a LOT.

Afterparty was small (teams and invite only) at a great venue and tons of fun. No fights (that I saw) and friendly Calgarians at every corner!

Regarding this shirt thing, COME ON MAN! The first time I saw one I really had to bite my tongue to not lash out at the person wearing it, and their coach who offered me one. Being arrogant is a subjective thing but to think of the PANJ boys threatening someone? I know a lot of them personally and they are generally well mannered and friendly but that’s my opinion. Maybe if some of you have an issue with them you can ring up their captain and express your concerns like I have in the past with a minor issue, and try to sort it out. As for them threatening someone, straight up…I don’t believe you.

Can I just add that this is the exact sort of thing that really ruins XYZ activity because of politics for future generations? Do you really want our younger cousins/nieces/nephews/kids to shy away from bhangra because of BS like this? Give your head a shake.

Thanks for everyones feedback regarding our performance. Our routine should have been more synchronized but we only had 2 weeks to prepare a routine and learn it and this was during when people had school. Once again, congrats to all the teams that placed and we hope to see you guys at future comps.

If there was an award for Best Organized Competition, I would like to present that to Jashan Bhangra Committee as they went above and beyond to satisfy the competing teams, judges and guest acts. From the time we arrived at the airport to the time we left Calgary, the committee did everything possible to satisfy us.

The organizers had setup up a meeting for the judges so the judging rubric could be discussed to make sure everyone was on the same page. Two team members from each competing team were allowed to speak with the judges face to face to ask questions (This is an awesome idea for the future). The idea at the mixer was very creative and food was awesome as well. Raffle prizes had a huge value to it and there were about ten draws. It seems like committee had a major support from the sponsors and I wouldn’t be surprised if they spent about 70K for this competition.

The competition venue was fully packed and as they sold about 1600 tickets. The competition ran on time and smoothly. Once the results were announced, two members of each team were given five minutes with all the judges to go over their performance. Having an Afterparty for just the teams, committee members and close friends was a great idea; this minimizes the chances of fights breaking out.

Special shoutouts to Tony, Sarb, Gurjeet, Raju J, Mike J and many others who made this weekend memorable for us as we were hopeful to see you guys next year.

Few Pointers for next year:

- Make sure to bring out the committee on stage and thank them for their hard work before the results are announced.
- Don’t forget to bring the judges to the stage before the results are announced.

+1

I definitely agree, even with Bhangra Fever, some teams from the second they send their audition video till the morning when they leave are just truly a pleasure to work with, and they deserve the recognition for it
